Americans losing interest in eBay

EBay is making big changes to its business these days -- but apparently it's not going over well with customers. According to a recent MSN-Zogby poll, only 31% of Americans plan to buy or sell anything on the auction site in the next year. That's down from 40% who said they bought or sold something on eBay in the last year.

There are two ways to look at this data. On one hand, one out of three Americans who go online still plan to use eBay next year. That's an incredible penetration rate, one that other retailers would love to have.

On the other hand, the numbers show that people are losing interest in eBay. If people stick by their answers, eBay could see a significant drop in U.S. business this coming year.

MSN commissioned Zogby International to survey 6,500 people about eBay and other topics. The eBay questions were chosen this year because the company has rolled out several controversial policy changes that outraged a vocal group of users -- mostly eBay sellers unhappy with new fee rates and feedback rules. The survey set out to gauge how the general online population felt about using eBay.

The biggest caveat here is that the poll asked people what they plan to do in the next year. And plans can change, particularly if someone needs to unload a record collection or buy that rare Beanie Baby. And we can't directly tie the loss of interest in eBay to its policy changes. People may be planning to spend less in general, an understandable sentiment in today's economy.

But what we can take from the survey is this: People aren't as enthusiastic about using eBay these days. And winning back a ho-hum audience is a tough job.

As a hobby i sell a few things on e-Bay. The charges seem to reflect a GREEDY CEO and a I FORGOT WHAT MADE US WHAT WE ARE ATTITUDE. Wake up e-Bay, your not the only one out their, you just came along at the right time. People like having a place like you to do business on the net, JUST DON"T KEEP GOUGING WITH YOUR FEES. The people leaving should tell you what you need to do, LOWER THOSE FEES!!!!PAYPAL included.  AND stop changing things for your benifit ONLY. Like some of the others, i see some crazy things going on with people trying different things too make a profit, that should not be happening, we should not have to add on to the shipping costs or,ship the cheapest way to make a profit with a good item. You might take a look at GM to see where most all big shots go in the end when GREED takes hold Instead of a fair price for all who helped you get where you are today. It's when you start to believe there is no end to your customer base that things start to go the wrong. YOU CAN DO BETTER.

Not a seller, but I gave up on ebay quite a while ago.  More than anything, its become a flea market of stores who have "Buy it Now" prices on nearly everything they sell rather than true auctions.  I do check prices there now and again, and buy even more infrequently---and I was someone who used to buy A LOT of stuff from there--razor blades, furnance, water and oil filters, books you name it.  Sellers, I'm not quite sure how you do it--between Ebay and Paypal nickel and diming you to death, it seems like if you sell anything of value you are losing 10 or 15% of your price?  And that's GROSS price, not profit.

Besides the fact that they rip you off on "associated" services and fees, they hound you to death with junk email and if you object, they bar your email address. Arrogant Jerks will lose out in the end every time. Cannot wait till they are forced into bankrupcy and am willing to help accelerate that if someone has an idea. Businesses run in order to rip off the public need to learn the "go away" lessons that we consumers have the power to enforce.

Ebay used to be a great place for bargins. Got burned twice for about $100.00 and no help from them it turned me off. And now with inflated shipping cost and all the scams it's time to say goodbye.

E-Bay is doing what flea markets did years ago, I had a booth at a flea market for 5 years and done very well until some retailers came in a started under cutting my prices for less then the cost of the product and forced me to lower my price. I could not compete.

This is what I think E-Bay is planning to do in the future, turn it into a retail site.

It's sad when greed kills a good thing and then companies like E-Bay want to know why they are losing business, I guess going to college teaches a person to be very short sighted.

For me, eBay has lost it's luster because of the eBay "Stores".  I purchase craft items mostly, and these "stores" sell new items for MORE than what I can purchase them for in a store.

Whatever happened to the people wanting to sell their used stuff at a lower price???

First of all, ebay does not charge the buyer any fees at all, nor does paypal charge the buyer any fees at all.

What you have are sellers that try to make up cost of doing business buy charging hidden fees in the s&h and some even charge you if you use paypal.  Here is a tip, if a seller is charging your 39.00 in shipping for a 1.00 item then first of all dont buy from that seller and seconed report him to ebay.

Paypal works fine for me.  Ok so they hold funds for some items, when you have a low feedback they do this, I have never had it happen to me yet.

Ebay has lost some of its luster and I think it is due to past mgt and the bone head in there now.

It will see its business drop and then will try to figure out what it can do to correct it.  Give it time.

As for me, ebay still works.  I sell my old video games and dvd's on ebay.  I get more then if I were to sell my video games at a local Gamestop.

All you cry babies out there, learn to use ebay first before you cry.  How has ebay made you pay for leaving a - (neg) feedback,  did the customer deserve the neg feedback or was he a day late in shipping and you wernt happy?

Ebay does not make anyone pay for any feedback, at all.  If you leave - feedback its on you, not ebay.

I see that this form is nothing for the most part but fly by night ebay users that have no clue how ebay works.

I agree with L'l John. Bob is exactly the kind of seller I can't and won't deal with.

The seller is not where EBAY makes its money. The BUYER is where the seller and EBAY make their money. If it wasn't for the BUYER neither one of you would have a pot to to piss in.

I see a lot of sellers now trying to charge $29.95 for shipping and item that costs $9.95. I know the box or envelope has costs and some of the Powersellers have labor costs to pay people to put things in the box or envelope. BUT NOT that much. I get boxes that look like they have been used 3 or 4 times already. Stuffed with 2 year old newspaper. I get CD's and DVD's in the bubble envelopes that have been used a couple of times.

Then I look at the postage that is charged and see where it costs a $1.70 and the buyer charged me $7.95. All you have to do is look for identical items and go down the list to see the differences in what the shipping charges are.

I've bought and sold on eBay since just about the beginning. I think I might be the only seller to applaud the new eBay feedback policy. As a seller, my own policy was simple. If a buyer pays me and I have his money, they have fulfilled their part of the agreement and I immediately leave positive feedback. None of this "I'll leave feedback afetr I receive it" crap. The seller has plenty of recourse when dealing with a bad buyer. As for eBay fees, go try and start a business elsewhere for less. See what fees are involved in a merchant account so you can accept credit cards. Look into starting you own website and store front and then try driving traffic to it. You will find the eBay is still the least expensive way of running a small business on the internet.

As for buyer complaining about shipping charges. DON'T BUY THE ITEM !!!

I don't agree with people trying to make big profit on shipping, but then again, I would never pay $50 shipping for something I know would cost $5 If the shipping charge is not stated up front, ask. If it's too high, don't bid on the item. You certainly should not buy something, agree to the price and then decide to complain about it.

I really don't see what all the whining is about.
