Americans losing interest in eBay

EBay is making big changes to its business these days -- but apparently it's not going over well with customers. According to a recent MSN-Zogby poll, only 31% of Americans plan to buy or sell anything on the auction site in the next year. That's down from 40% who said they bought or sold something on eBay in the last year.

There are two ways to look at this data. On one hand, one out of three Americans who go online still plan to use eBay next year. That's an incredible penetration rate, one that other retailers would love to have.

On the other hand, the numbers show that people are losing interest in eBay. If people stick by their answers, eBay could see a significant drop in U.S. business this coming year.

MSN commissioned Zogby International to survey 6,500 people about eBay and other topics. The eBay questions were chosen this year because the company has rolled out several controversial policy changes that outraged a vocal group of users -- mostly eBay sellers unhappy with new fee rates and feedback rules. The survey set out to gauge how the general online population felt about using eBay.

The biggest caveat here is that the poll asked people what they plan to do in the next year. And plans can change, particularly if someone needs to unload a record collection or buy that rare Beanie Baby. And we can't directly tie the loss of interest in eBay to its policy changes. People may be planning to spend less in general, an understandable sentiment in today's economy.

But what we can take from the survey is this: People aren't as enthusiastic about using eBay these days. And winning back a ho-hum audience is a tough job.

Between the garbage, the fakery, and the lack of useful recourse if a dealer reneges after taking your money, I gave up using Ebay in 2001 or 2002 and don't miss it a bit.  There are way too many other options for anyone who isn't into buying junk for the next flea market.

I have lost interest in Ebay due to outrageous shipping costs.  It seems so many sellers are trying to make a profit with shipping rather than the item they are selling.  Lately I can do better purchasing locally - with sales tax included.  Also Ebay is no longer the place to find deals on automobiles.

I am in the process of slowing down/shutting down my ebay store. I am a 6 year powerseller. Ebay has continued to raise fees and take a bigger cut of my profit. Ebay has also allowed members of theirVeRo program abuse their power to shut down sellers such as me who sell legitimate items simply because the VeRo partner does not want their items sold by a non dealer even if the item is used. I have found other auction/online store sites that are more seller friendly to move my store to.

I quite ebay, because of the lack of accountability. I have bought trailers, electronics, and furniture from   Ebay, but I withdrew my last bid because of inconsistencies of the seller, and I have not been back since.

Now, because of ebay, I am leery of making online purchases from other than national retailers.

Ebay is a joke. Huge shipping fees that cost more then the items sold. Plus, Paypal is a joke! Charging fees on your money as well. Ebay and Paypal have nickle and dimed people so bad that it's not worth selling or buying items on there anymore. I can get better deals locally and know I will get the item I pay for! Give us more payment choices then Paypal, cut your fees, and make sure we get what were paying for, then I might come back. But I don't see them ever changing!

I stopped selling on ebay due to their last huge fee increase. That was back about 4 or 5 years ago.

Right on Dan.  Management IS to blame for taking an originally good concept then gleefully strangling it.  Harvard Business School motto- GOUGE AS HARD AS YOU CAN WHEN THE CHANCE ARISES-WHEN BUSINESS DROPS GOUGE HARDER TO MAKE UP FOR FALLING REVENUES

R.I.P. ebay, model for current American business practices.  Isn't anyone else out there even greedy enough to start up a knock off operation??? That actually works and has some class and product breadth?

An addendum:  ebay- another case where the Internet no longer seems to be the wave of the future.

I still sell on eBay, but I too can see the end is near. eBay stopped protecting the seller, and bends over backwards for the buyer. They forget that the seller is where they make their money. It seems as if there is a weekly update as to how the site works. The CEO stated that items selling in the stores for less than a dollar makes no business sense. SCREW YOU! Let me sell what I want for whatever I want to, take your cut, and leave me alone! And if the buyes are that STUPID that they dont read the auction completely enough, too frikkin' bad! Stupid is as stupid does.

Now as a seller I cant leave appropriate (Negative) feedback when a buyer stiffs me. So let me see if I have this correct...

I can bid...I can win...But I dont have to pay?! And lastly, the holding of funds...

I have news for you ePay, BayBal and others. There is NO WHERE I am aware of that will let me have the item before I pay for it. You want ME to send an item, to a buyer, and my funds are held for up to 21 BUSINESS days (A Month!). GO SCREW YOURSELF! I will try that tonight. Go to the car dealer, and take a car, and tell them, see you in a month to sqaure up?!  Yea..maybe from JAIL!

I only wish that I had a friend who was an attorney. I may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but my gut says there is something fishy goin on here...

Bob,

You sound like the kind of seller that NO online auction business would want to do business. Do you advertise cell phone batteries for $1 then hide shipping charges in small print that amount up to $39 ?
