A billion-dollar weekend for Apple

Apple's new 3G iPhones go on sale Friday, which means that after months of little to no revenue from phone sales, Apple will finally be milking the iPhone cash cow once again. We could be seeing a billion-dollar weekend for the company. Still, while Apple is primed for a massive launch day -- 22 countries will participate -- I expect a bit of chaos will reign, at least in the U.S.

The problem is that iPhone buyers will have to buy and activate their phones in either an Apple or an AT&T retail store (AT&T is the iPhone's exclusive carrier partner in the U.S.). That's a strategy intended to prevent people from unlocking the phones and reselling them. If you've activated a cell phone in a store recently, you know it can be a huge pain. It takes 10 minutes at least to get through the paperwork, the credit check and the back-and-forth yadda yadda before you walk out the door. Even if AT&T makes the iPhone activations as pain-free as possible, I foresee lines of disgruntled shoppers who are tired of waiting.

Meeting initial iPhone demand could also be a challenge for Apple. An iSuppli analyst predicts the company needs to have between 1 million and 2 million units ready on launch day. Apple isn't saying how many phones it has in stock, but that amount will go a long way to meeting the company's goal of selling 10 million iPhones by the end of this year.

News.com has a nice post answering many iPhone launch questions. The new phones will cost $200 or $300, depending on how much storage space you want. If you don't want to be strong-armed into a two-year service contract with AT&T, you can pay $600 or $700 for the phones on a commitment-free basis.

One analyst thinks Apple brings in between $350 to $700 for each 3G phone sold, with the carriers passing a subsidy down to the buyer. Another analyst averages Apple's revenue at $466 per unit. If that's the case, Apple could get close to $1 billion in revenue over the weekend if it sells 2 million units. And that's not counting any revenue the company brings in from sales at its online "App Store."

I suspect Apple is leaning heavily on carriers to make the weekend go as smoothly as possible.

No money left for iphone.  You can take the iphone to the middle east.  You will have many arab custombers there.

Looks cool but still can't out perform a Blackberry.

As a former Sprint customer I purchased an iPhone back around Mother's Day.  I agree the phone was CLEARLY overrated.  The camara feartures are basic, don't like that fact that you have to send pics via MMS (or email address or whatever the hell it is).  When some one sends you a picture you must first go through AT&T's website set up called "Viewmymessage.com" then enter a Message ID and password just to view a picture that you still are unable to download to your phone. I also agree that the one finger typing is quite annoying as well as alot of other features.  We won't even go into the bill that you get from AT&T for monthly service.  Granted I wasn't a fan of Sprint's Customer Service but I certainly miss my Samsung and it's great and cool features at half the price!

bunch of knuckle heads !! Apple ,s technology is so far ahead of everyone elses its ridiculous !! anybody that knows anything about tech knows that. the Positives out wiegh the negatives and you simpletons who dont care for it obviosuly have your own agenda. different strokes for different folks

No matter which way you slice it, this phone is in demand. I agree it's heacily locked down and it just entices hackers to well... hack it. I was hoping for some more basic features from this thing. An unlocked Iphone with 3rd party apps (some you use for a few times then they lock.. i can foresee them being distributed on the APPS store) have proven more useful and have the capability to do what us users want out of the Iphone (MMS, Control Photo Composition, Video, running Game Emulators, Tip Calculator).

One thing they need to address is the ability to delete mutiple e-mails and attaching multiple images via e-mail. If I take 20 pics and need to send my client I don't want to send 20 induvidual images. C'mon Apple.. you made an innovative product please look into it further and refine it some more.

One poster commented how Apple and AT$T are taking advantage of the consumer...gas companies are taking advantage...but one does NOT NEED an overpriced, overhyped iPhone....if these materialistic fools want to plunk down hundreds of dollars for a crappy phone...fine. I don't really care. I'd rather save my $ for a rainy day.

After bad service, dropped calls, rude customer service people.  I dropped my contract and went with the pay-by-unit TracFone. BEST decision I have ever made.    I have gone from $65 month  with 500 minutes.  To $20 every 3 months with 90 minutes to use in that time frame. I never once have used them all!! I have come to realize I am just not that important.  No need to be at everyones beg-and-call 24/7. And with the economy in this state, I'd rather buy milk or eggs with that cash!

There really is no point in buying this iPhone. By next week, they'll have something better. If I bought all the "new and improved" stuff they blab about on TV every day, I'd go broke. I'll just wait untill something better comes along, and then I'll wait forsomething better than that one too, and the next, and the next, and the next, and...........

my daughter has the i phone and loves it she has all her pictures i tunes and scheldule on it . i bought it for her birthday. no mphone has graphics like it period. lastly with gas and food sky high its better for her to play music text her friends and phone around than myself to entertain her at the beach etc . buy 100 so my aapl stock will rise

A message to everyone about iPhone and AAPL....The iPhone is the number one phone on the market and so the price of the plan has increased by $10 per month because of the 3G speed....And, ATT is subsiding the iPhone making it cost less to buy....AAPL is not overpriced...I guess whoever states that does not invest in stocks and should not make statements such as that....I have an iPhone already and am planning to upgrade...However, I will wait about 6 months to line a year and buy not one, but two phones....I did the same for Playstation 3 and Wii and waited....I cannot afford to leavemy job and go out to wait in a long.
