Verizon to become largest wireless carrier

Verizon shares are up 5% today after the company said it will buy Alltel for $28 billion, which includes assuming about $22 billion in Alltel debt. Verizon will surprass AT&T to become the largest wireless carrier in the U.S. MocoNews says Alltel is an industry pioneer: with only 13 million subscribers, it tests new services quickly and acts almost like a laboratory for everyone else.

Snatching up an innovative company that isn't afraid to break new ground is important as Verizon competes with an increasing number of rivals across multiple technology fronts. Verizon picks up some assets as well; Alltel serves 57 rural markets that Verizon had no presence in.

The transaction is a bit tricky, since Verizon may have to offload some of Alltel's markets to get regulatory approval. Still, Verizon expects the deal to be cash-flow positive in the first year despite integration costs that could run over $1 billion.

Here's what analysts are saying about the deal:

"You have to see it in context of how Verizon is trying to reinvent itself as a wireless versus a wireline company. The more they do, the faster they do it, the better.” -- Craig Moffett, Sanford C. Bernstein

"This is a way of getting growth from a market that's becoming fully saturated and beginning to slow down," -- Joseph Bonner, Argus Research

"This deal would help Verizon Wireless grow by acquiring a new customer base. Not that it matters much anymore, because they are all so big, but this deal would give Verizon Wireless the number one spot in the rankings." -- independent analyst Jeff Kagan

"A deal like this would make Verizon somewhat bigger than AT&T. It's looking, more and more, that there's the Big Two and everyone else." -- Julie Ask, Jupitermedia

"Generally speaking, you will continue to see consoldiation among the smaller players. (The wireless industry) is a more limited field than it once was." -- William Power, Robert W. Baird

wonder if that means that the Alltel customers will see a dollar increase in their services.

Will this fill in some of the "dead" areas that I get no signal in? A friend w/Altell says he has no problems in the same spots...

Verizon is terrible they have the worst customer service. They are so big that they do not even care or don't have the ability to react because they are cumbersome.

If you want good screwing, have Verizon as your provider

I hope that verizon will still offer the some of the same sevices that alltel has. I had verizon before the sevice is good but alltel is better in alot of ways

Vwireless is great never had any trouble with greating customer service when needed, great company too bad that Vwireless had to put up with crappy customers.

I have alltel, it is a great company. I hate the fact that Verizon is buying them. I have friends that work for verizon in the Dallas area, they all says the same thing on how badly they are treated. This will be not a  good deal for Alltel clients.

We have had Verizon for six years. Not many problems here. Use to have dead areas but the newer phones and just keeping the phone updated has elimnated that. The only complaint I have and I am sure it is with every company is the ridiculous overage charges and the incoming text messaging. I use to get spam text messages that I had to pay for. So just blocked all texting. We pay .45 for every min overage.

I am a part of Verizon Wireless'  customer service and I assure you everybody on my team will jump thru hoops to solve everybody's problem, no matter how the customer acts on the line.  Most of the customers I deal with understand the problem and the solutions to those problems I offer.  Our customer satisfaction is first rate in customer surveys.  Some problems can't be fixed.  Some of the new Altell coverage areas will solve many problems.  We offer enough ways to check minutes so there is no reason for astronomical bills except for customers not checking and getting plans where they think they're getting by on the cheap, or people buying PDA's or Blackberries when they should get a no frills phone that they can understand.  But we never voice those opinions, we just do what we can to educate and enlighten, and even, at times, giving credit when it isn't warranted.  I can just see me asking Visa to credit me for that new DVD player because I couldn't understand how to work it and I'm too lazy to take it back to the store.

No  way! I just re-newed with Alltel -but I'll drop Verizon like a hot rock, sorry guys ,and will NOT be paying anyone a "penalty" fee for canceling.Verizon in my opinion does not exist, had 'em,hated em,an ain't going back -NEVER.

Peter lewis is confusing Verizon with Sprint. Either that or he is headline reading. Verizon provides the best service in Florida, period. I use both companies, Verizon and Alltel. They are both above reproach.
