A stretch: iPhone murders the DS

Bizarre iPhone countdown story #4,289: Forbes looks at how Apple's iPhone could kill....the Nintendo DS? A four-year-old gaming device whose sales are already flattening? Pick something a little more challenging, would ya?

The not-so-elegant point Forbes tries to make is that Apple will soon let outside developers make software for the iPhone and iPod Touch. And games will be a big part of that, seeing as how the devices have a touch-screen and are motion-sensitive.

Allowing third-party applications on the iPhone is a huge deal. Look at what that did for Facebook. But if people aren't going gaga for the DS anymore, it's not because of Apple.

Apple shares are up nearly 2% today, heading into the final stretch before the company's June 9 announcements at its annual developers conference. Big iPhone news is expected.

by the time that this software is released the new DS will have been announced, the hype surrounding the next nintendo handheld will drown out anything that has to do with gaming on the iphone

Seen a number of Apple stock stories prior to the conference next week. I myself have taken a reasonable position ($16K) in Apple prior to the release. Bought it 2 days ago and after today's rally it is in the money - www.savingtoinvest.com/.../oh-noi-just-bought-16k-worth-of-apple.html

Here's hoping to an amazing i-phone!

Waiting for the new DS and who wants to loose there eye sight playing a game on there iphone...Ds rocks and always will. Also, what parents will give all there kids and grandkids an iphone. count me out

How did it murder the DS? Why do this: "Merry Christmas! It's an iPhone! Now just pay $500 to get out of your contract with T-Mobile, pay monthly bills for all the craptacular third-party apps, and then buy terrible games!". What kid would want to hear that?! And, the iPhone costs more, and a new portable is coming out from Nintendo. TAKE THAT, IPHONE!

Yeah, of course! because Mac has always been famous for gaming. The other reason it is absurd is because of the price tag. Compare an iphone price tag to a DS. Only those retards that wait in line for a PS3 or  Xbox360 (or even the iphone itself) in subzero temperatures actually want this.

Forbes is just passing along a "press release" from apple.

Wow. Come on, iPhone is a lot more expensive than a Nintendo DS Lite! But still, it's not worth much anyway. Even having an NES emulator won't cut it.

The next Nintendo handheld will kill the iPhone. Remember the Wii's opening sellout? I hope it's like that.

i hate it when the media tries to overhype apple. i think the writer is holding aapl shares.  i suppose apple is going to put garmin, rim, nintendo, msft, & dell out of business.  apple should go for the gusto and put exxon-mobil out of business with the i-car with i-engine which runs on i-fusion.

That is so true. I-phone isn't even in the same category as Nintendo DS. No crap system sales for DS may be down, the figgin thing's been out for 3.5+ "YEARS". they already have an installed user base, why doesn't apple compare software sales?

No kids pay no attention to the man behind the mirror, just look the other way (sarcasm)

Come on!  iPhone VS DS.  I dont think so!  Not even in the same ball park!  The DS is doing just fine.  Third party developers will never meet up to the DS.  This has got to be rumor # 6,0000.000 LMAO!
