Where Intel invests its money

A new round of technology investments has been announced by Intel Capital, the chipmaker's investment arm. Since it's always good to spy on where others are putting their money, I thought I'd list the eight investments, which total more than $60 million. Intel shares, by the way, are up nearly 3% today to $23.55.

Looks like the company is especially interested in online retailing, video content and distribution and social networking. Big surprise. Intel's track record isn't bad, though. It has invested in 1,000 companies since 1991. Of those, 168 have gone public and 212 were acquired or merged. On to the latest companies:

Accertify -- Makes fraud management software for online merchants, focusing on fighting credit card fraud.

Grid Net -- Makes energy grid and efficiency software. Intel might be a little biased here, since Grid Net works with the WiMax high-speed Internet technology that Intel has invested in.

HealthiNation -- A video network focused on health. Has cable distribution and a Web business.

Internet Mall -- An online retailer in the Czech Republic with operations in other parts of Central Europe. Has 500,000 registered users.

TOA Technologies -- Makes software to help companies manage mobile workforces, including employees that need to communicate instantly with clients.

Veoh Networks -- Gathers videos and television shows online and houses them at one site. Videos are free and funded by advertising.

Vostu -- A social networking platform in Latin America.

Vriti Infocom -- Specializes in online education in India; builds online testing, classrooms and communities

If Intel and other Tech companies are soooo concerned about the education system and standards here in the U.S. why don't they contribute to it and do something to help make it better instead of having Craig Barret come out regularly jacking his jaw publicly complaining about it?.

these are really stupid investments,,,,how about research for alternative fuels ?

Intel DOES contribute to education by funding schools, donating equipment and allowing employees to teach technical classes at schools. Do your research before shooting your mouth off!!

I agree with Mike and from what we see and hear in Arizona...Intel is doing a respectable job in providing educational incentives, funding, and their employees to help teach courses.   I also bash Intel too when their performance is lacking and they deserve a smack down.  However relative to education they shine.
