Exxon: The world's 18th-largest economy?

Earnings from Royal Dutch Shell and BP today just about guarantee that ExxonMobil is going to report some truly gaudy first-quarter revenue and profits on Thursday.

And they're only going to get bigger as the year rolls along. So big, in fact, that Exxon's revenue by the end of the year may be greater than the gross domestic product of Sweden, the world's 18th-largest economy.

Here's how the numbers could work:

Wall Street is expecting the oil giant to report $121 billion in revenue for the quarter, about 40% higher than a year ago. But BP reported a 44% revenue increase to $89 billion, and Royal Dutch Shell reported a 56% revenue gain to $114 billion.

In the first quarter of 2007, crude oil averaged $58.07 a barrel. In the first quarter of 2008, it averaged about $97 a barrel, a 67% change. If Exxon simply sold what it sold a year ago at this year's prices, it's possible to see revenue hit $130 billion. That would be larger than the gross domestic product of New Zealand in 2007. One analyst contacted by BusinessWeek thinks it could hit $135 billion. (By the way, Shell's revenue was roughly the size of the gross domestic product of Egypt.)

Plus, Exxon will get a boost for both revenue and profit from converting sales outside the United States back into dollars. Remember, the dollar is down.

Meanwhile, net income should be north of $12 billion, or $2.11 a share. If it hits $13 billion, that would be as large as the gross domestic product of, say, Brunei. That's the oil-rich nation on the island of Borneo whose sultan, Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, according to Forbes magazine, is worth at least $20 billion.

Now, how does Exxon get to be the size of Sweden's economy? Let's say first-quarter revenue comes in at $130 billion when crude oil averaged more than $97 a barrel. So far in April, crude has averaged $112 a barrel and looks like it will soon top $120. So, it's possible Exxon's revenue for the second quarter could be $140 billion, maybe more. If it hits $150 billion, that would be bigger than the GDP of the Philippines.

Four quarters of numbers like that would mean the company could gross $480 million -- more than the GDP of Sweden and slightly less than No. 17, Turkey. In fact, Wall Street analysts now expect Exxon's revenue to top $550 billion in both 2008 and 2009.

If you're purely interested in the money, you should be thrilled. But not everyone is interested in just the money.

Descendants of oil baron John D. Rockefeller, who in the 19th century put together what would become Exxon, want the company to bar the chief executive officer from serving as chairman so management can't delay action on climate change. Family members will announce their support on Wednesday for a shareholder resolution to split the positions. The proposal won support of 40% of shareholders in 2007 and 34.3% of shareholders in 2006.

Exxon opposes the proposal.

Everyone has an option, move close to work, change jobs, ride a bike, etc, etc. If you don't like paying at the pump, do something besides complain about Exxon profits.  I don't see anyone complaining about google or apple making money.

I say that we all go on strike in August for one week (use a weeks vacation - spend your time on who matters in this world - YOUR FAMILY!!!)- do not go to work, do not buy their gas - let these people know that it is us who make the decisions.  It is becasue of us that they even have jobs and if enough of us send a strong enough message they may just get the point that we are pissed and no longer going to be raped by the government and big business!  It is time that we begin to stand up against this - all of this - a war that will be paid for by those who haven't even been born yet, to be enslaved by the hypocracy that is know as Big Brother and his best friend Big Business; it is time that we make a stand for what is right in this world and stop being lead to slaughter by blind politicians who care not for our best interests but for keeping thier pockets fat!

Great story! The revenue is staggering...no wonder so many American people can't pay their bills, or save any money for their own retirement. We're all investing in the oil companies retirement programs. Sad.

I'm all for making a profit and understand the importance making good business decisions, but this goes deeper than that and is destroying more good peoples lives than it's helping.

Someone seriously needs to step in and take control of this American gauging.

I think NOW is the time( they can NOW AFFORD IT!) to think about their CARBON FOOTPRINTS and put something in place to sequester all THEIR CARBON EMMISSIONS.

Clearly there is a lack of understanding of a market and global economy on this board.

1) Exxon does not establish the price of oil, the market does.

2) They spend billions every year to extract the stuff from contries none of want to live in. (Capital Expenditures)

3) America as a selfish society wants it all and cheaply (go overseas and pay $8 a liter if you think this is bad)

4) We continue to want to consume resources without thought to the environment and future generations. (hint: when I chop that tree down in my backyard for firewood, once it's gone, it's gone)

5) Take responsibility for your actions, Exxon does not run your life, you do.

The answer to everyone's gas price complaints is simple, don't buy gas if you think it's too expensive. Ride a bike, get a horse, or stop complaining and buy the gas. I once knew a man who was famous for saying " it costs what it costs, do you want it or not?" It's not the fault of the oil companies that you NEED gas!

I watched on the news last night, OPEC saying because the American dollar is going down in value, it is making the cost of oil go up.  And they forsee it hitting $200 a barrel very soon.  That is almost $7 a gallon and there is nothing they can do about it.  If there is truly nothing they can do about it, why are so many people making record amounts of money off of oil?  I just don't understand why a cap can't be put on the price.  If they weren't making any money on it, I could see the issue.  But when they are recording record profits, this is getting ridiculous!!!

oil companies make big bucks because WE drive BIG gas guzzlers. Ride a bike or use public transportation...Just quit whining

It is really a shame the that United States Of American is faced with these enorous gas prices. Enen during World War ll gas prices were still about 0.50  gallon or lower. Something is terriibly wrong in our country. The oceans are full of salt water. The united States and environmental companies along with the automobile mfgs should come up with an idea where salt water and another ingrediant can be combined into fuel and let these foreigh companies where we supposedly are getting our fuel from drink the oil. These foriegn companies are ruining our economy and soon people won't be able to go to work. They are already losing their homes and our political people in office don't seem to be doing much about it.

I am a disabled individulal living on very limited funds and barely getting buy. And I know there are many more prople out there with the same problems as I. This country is really in a need of help. We need our own refineries for oil and these other countries can drink there oil.

Its a sad America that this is what we have come to. That a company so large no longer cares about the people it serves only the money it makes, the bonuses they will get, and how to do it all over again next year. Not to mention the lack of concern for the environment. They can make all the excuses they want, but if they were really concerned about the economy, Exxon would lower the prices and suck it up that their bonuses were a few thousand less after all is it that big of a deal when an Executive at Exxons bonus is bigger than most of us make in a year?
