For Crocs, it's all about the ugly

Hard to believe but there's actually something uglier than Crocs' shoes -- the performance of its stock.  This one-time fave of momentum traders has seen its share price plunge by 86% over the last six months alone.  The most recent bloodbath came earlier this week when the company guided sales and earnings estimates sharply lower.

For investors the question is simple -- were Crocs merely a fad, or is the company and the brand merely experiencing some very nasty growing pains?  How you answer that question will determine if you think the freefall represents an interesting long-term growth opportunity, or if there's simply more room to short the stock on its way to fad junk heap along with Snapple, Krispy Kreme and Zubaz (no they aren't making a comeback!!).

Now I've never been a fan of Crocs, as the brightly colored, hole-filled shoes were simply too ugly for me to even bother trying on.  Yet lots of people love the things, and not just kids. I've heard from teachers, nurses, retail workers (folks that spend lots of time on their feet) and the message is always the same: don't knock 'em until you've tried 'em because they are the most comfortable shoes they've ever owned. Maybe, but I still can't get past the ugly part. Too vain, I guess.

My personal feelings aside, the reality is that Crocs are popular for reasons other than style and that suggests the shoe company's products aren't merely a fad. Fashionistas can cringe all they want, but these babies are here to stay.

That said, the question becomes if and when to buy the stock.  While valuations appear cheap -- the price-to-sales ratio has gone from more than 10-to-1 in October to about 1-to-1 now.  The problem is that investors and analysts have no confidence in future forecasts as managment has done a miserable job of providing accurate guidance. High inventory levels also pose a problem, as the only way to move that merchandise is with a surge in demand (unlikely) or with lower prices.  Lower prices will cut into the company's margins, thereby impacting earnings growth rates.

In other words, it will take time for Crocs to work off excess supply and then to get the production targets back on track with the current demand picture both domestically and internationally.  Figure a good nine months left of relatively weak numbers.

Much of that bad news is already priced into the stock, however, so for the stock to go up it really only needs to stop grossly missing consensus estimates.  That will be easier now that everyone and their brother has seriously marked down future-growth estimates.  Just as overly ambitious projections undercut the stock at the top, overly bearish sentiment is setting the stage for a recovery rally, as roughly 38% of the stock's float is being shorted.

It's too early to jump back in as the stock is stilll searching for a bottom, but the Crocs story isn't over yet and by the end of summer it might just be time for bargain hunters to take the bait and bite into Crocs.

In response to - "Cheap copycat imports" - there is a way to prevent this - patents.  they can be used to prevent import of infringing products, among other things.  Crocs should have some in the wings, else they don't have anything to cry about.  For the record, I do not condone copying, but then again, copying is the best form of flattery, or so the saying goes....

In response to - I hope Crox will last A gazzilion trillion million years - they probably will.  All plastics probably will.  Although, they may not last in the form you would prefer...

In response to - the shoes became wedged in a stair - your comment would have more impact if people could read an English translation of the article.  Without the benefit of the specifics of the story, how is a croc any different from a flip-flop, so far as getting stuck in an escalator goes?  I think the story got media attention because Crocs is a brand-name with presumably deep pockets, damages-wise.  Who will waste time or effort suing the maker of a $2 flip-flop?

I bought my first pair of crocs at Modell's. Black was the only color, but that was I needed for work. On my feet all day, these are wonderful. Then I discovered the crocs RX, which are even better for people who stand at their job daily. Then came the blue ones, because black just doesn't go with everything. Then came the sandles. My niece and I went to Disney world. She got pink crocs with mickey mouse holes, and a pair of sandals, I got two pair of sandals  for myself. We lived in them at Disney, and now at home, they are always somewhere handy to slip on. Love them. Customer service at the company is always happy to help. Well, I guess you can tell, I'm a fan!

ugly looking shoes but you wont find anything more comfortable. i have several bulging disks in my back and i can walk and stand for long periods of time because of these shoes. thanks crocs

Crocs are made for the same people who wear gray sweat pants out in public. The market for people who don't care about their appearance gets saturated after a certain point, then the product loses its fad status, and sales plummet despite a small core of dedicated fans. This stock is dead for good.

Doesn't matter how you spell it, everyone knows what they are.... comfortable.  I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder of these 'ugly' shoes, nothing that a few Jibbitz couldn't fix!  I am not a slave to fashion. Our whole family loves the many styles of Crocs, and there are plenty. We tried them last summer and have not taken them off since. I don't even mind my feet getting wet through the holes of my Mary Janes when it rains. Will keep an eye on their stock.  Remember, you can run your Crocs through the dishwasher when they get dirty!

Crocs being stuck in escalators is so old news. A pair of rubber boots can get stuck in an escalator ( 35 yrs. ago when I was 10 yrs. old).  As moms across the world would say, "pick up your feet and watch where you are going.'

They are very comfortable. It's just a matter of getting use to the looks of it.

I lost a lot of money on this stock. I shld have sold it when it was as it's peak, but who could have known.

Everyone in my family has Crocs!!!

All of you people are griping about appearance, getting your shoe stuck in an escalator and spelling. You miss the point.

They sell because they feel so good you don't care how they look.

Any shoe can get stuck in an escalator.

And I still know what you are talking about know matter how you spell it!

Just like all shoes, they come in styles.

They feel better than any shoe you will ever own.

You can't go wrong buying there stock. Especially now. The price is low!

I bought my Crocs over 3 years ago at a boat show befroe they became popular.

I still wear these pair and have purchased 2 more pair. I LOVE them!  I also purchased some of the off brands and they are not as comfortable and are hot on the feet. I have Jibbits for every season to decorate them with. The mammoth crocs with the fleece lining are great for winter wearing and very warm.

I hope Crocs NEVER go out of business. They have so many styles now to choose from that they are not ugly.

You can get them at a discount from www.shoebuy.com and they also give you free shippng and no taxes.

My husband also loves them for boating and fishing as they are not hot on the feet!

The price of the real Crocs are worth it, they last for years.

the cheap knock offs are hot and don't lst and are not comfortable.
