GM sales up everywhere but here

In a rare release of good news, General Motors announced that its Latin America, Africa, and Middle East operating region set an all-time sales record for the first quarter: Over 323,000 vehicles sold, up nearly 53,000 units from the same period last year.

The 20% increase easily beats the industry’s 12% growth rate for the region and brings the company’s market share to 18%. Even if U.S. consumers aren’t crazy about Detroit’s small cars, and have ended their love affair with super-sized SUVs, the rest of the world is rollin’ American style.

Breaking down the results, all-time sales records were set in Argentina, Egypt, and North Africa. New quarterly records were posted in Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Venezuela, the Middle East, and Israel. GM’s Chevrolet-branded small cars led the results -- generating nearly 40% of total sales.

Things are a bit different in the Middle East, where tastes are more in line with the United States circa 2003: According to Terry Johnsson, president of GM’s Middle East Operations, U.S.-produced full-sized SUVs remain "very popular in the region." Cheap gas and burgeoning oil wealth make the big vehicles an affordable status symbol in the deserts surrounding the Persian Gulf. [readmore]

Meanwhile, the average American continues to battle the so-called "quadruple whammy" of falling home prices, falling real wages, tighter credit, and rising food and fuel prices. Lehman Brothers analyst Brian Johnson quantifies the impact these factors are having on sales of full-sized trucks and SUVs in a research note published Monday. After peaking in 2003 and 2004, sales have "come under significantly increased pressure over the past few months." With gas prices flying towards the $3.40 per gallon mark, he’s looking for total sales to fall 13% this year to 2,510,000 units. Things are looking equally nasty in the used-car market: As everyone tries to unload their gas-guzzlers, resale values on SUVs and pickups are falling by double-digits.

In response to these trends, Brian expects "manufacturers to cut sharply their output of these highly profitable vehicles, putting pressure on their own earnings." He estimates that GM will need to cut production of full-sized trucks and SUVs by 11% or 143,000 units this year to better match demand. Inventories of these products remain persistently high for GM, with nearly a 120 day supply sitting on asphalt lots around the country.

Compensating for some of this are increased efforts to expand production overseas and buildup small-car capacity here in the United States with an eye towards the export market. Over just the past two days, General Motors announced it’s looking at increasing its assembly capacity in Indonesia and decided to build an advanced $200 million engine plant in Brazil. The latter features a closed-loop production process that doesn’t create industrial waste and will feature a large natural habitat preserve.

The mix shift from profitable trucks to tight-margined small cars will hurt GM: Brian is looking for a $4.7 billion loss in the North American market this year, compared to a $1.6 billion profit in the Latin America, Africa, and Middle East operating region. He thinks a small profit of 46 cents per share could be eked out in 2009. But even with international success, GM will remain on borrowed time unless it can recapture the hearts and minds of American drivers. The hell-bent rush into the electric-hybrid segment is a step in the right direction. And if all else fails, Clinton’s down for a bailout.

I don't know what everyone is complaining about.  I have owned nothing but American cars from a ford Escort GT in the late 80's "never had issues with it" to a 02 Corvete Z06 and a 05 Tahoe which I own now, not to mention my all the Trans Ams I have owned and Mustang GTs, when I have gotten rid of cars it isn't because they have given me issues I have just wnated something else so I went and got it.  American cars aren't nearly as bad and they are made out in the magizines, "and I think that most car magizines have are smoking the products they are suppose to be selling."  People here are just foreign bran struck if they get a BMW and it gives them issues then they right out and buy another one, now let an American car give them issues and they will swear off all American cars for life.  My dad has 300,000 miles on his Ford Crown Vic.  I had 180,000 on a Pontiac Grand Am that people told me I would be lucky to to get 60,000 miles never had a problem.  The only reason I got rid of it is, it was hit and totaled by the insurance campany.  I am an American and I support home first, if I can't find anything made here by US then I go else where.  Support home if you must stray to the foreign companies then when it's time to buy again at least give home a chance before you go but another Toyota or Honda.  We are losing our identity.  We have hardly any home grown companies left.  Bell Labs is now own by a French company, Zenith and RCA are either gone or owned by Japanese.  Even our back stabing Government has gone nuts giving the contract to build tankers to Airbus instead of Boeing.  Buy Ameerican your job could be next on the chopping block.

I would rather send my money to an American company than a foeign car company. I strongly support GM products. I own a 2006 Chevy Cobalt which I bought at 0% interest through GMAC and it's absolutly the best car I have owned. The gas mileage is great and for $12,000, a foreign car company could not have come close!

Rob,

I am sorry to see that you are not happy with your Dodge truck. I own a GMC Sierra and a Chevy 2500HD Duramax and love both of them. I think you are just wrapped around the axel about the current gasoline prices. You can't find a foriegn truck that will out perform an American Pickup in every aspect.

for michael wallace......a vote for a democrat is like a vote for Stalin or Hitler, wake up and smell the coffee!

Instead of GM cutting thousands upon thousands of the blue-collar work force and offering buy-outs and closing plants, they should eliminate themselves of quite a few of the worthless do-nothing upper crust management running the ship. Instead of feeding the management millions of dollars in salary pay, wittle the management down and throw that money towards product development and design.

Have you seen some of the ridiculous titles of some of the upper management? I swear there might be a title of EXECUTIVE MANAGER OF BLAH BLAH AND YADDA YADDA DING DONG.

It's sickening...

Another, less popular thought? Get rid of these brands: Pontiac, Buick, GMC, Hummer, and Saab. Within the next ten years, these brands will be futile.

MARK MY WORDS.

GM should be THIS, and ONLY THIS:

Saturn as the exciting entry level brand

Chevrolet as the mainstream family-friendly brand

Cadillac as the luxury and exotic vehicles brand

Just my two cents. Cut the fat GM. The RIGHT fat.

Well i have bought american cars most every time. Last time i bought a Nissan was in 87 a pathfinder, nice suv. Resale was ok, I lost few grand. But nothing like my 7oz28 is worth today. I have seen these go from 60-100K, it cost 3,200 new. It sits in my garage I take it out for a spin a few times a month. My wife drives a 2000 plymouth Neon to get to work and back 80K on the dial and its never had a single issue to date. We just bought a Pontiac 2008 Solstice gxp, wow what a fun car it is. reminds us of the first day with my Z28(not as fast but what a kick to drive) looks and drives like a 100K car , i paid 25.5K dealers car with a under 500 miles. Loaded with all the goodies. Pontiac is making some great cars today. Oh, its built in america even has the Union lable on inside door local 435, Wi. wilmington plant. Toyota/nissan plants of america are all non union and the wages are not that great. Sure its a job. But the money goes to pay the EX japan workers that used to build them thier now we pay them to retire. Out sourced to the USA(i wonder if some of the people in Japan feel we stole thier jobs)? Buy American, from a american company. Cars made by the big 3 are much better than they get credit for. This Pontiac is getting 20-24 in town and 30-35 on the road. not bad for a 2.0 260hp 4 banger that feels like a V8. We love this car and test drove others like the Scion Tc and others. I have to say the Solstice/Sky(Saturn) are the sexiest rides for the $ you will ever get in a roadster. Test drive one of them and see. You might just be buying American metal once again.

how about suporting american companies. the money youy spend  on imports goes back to the home country no matter where it is built.

I support GM.  They build excellent cars.  By the way, most of the cars sold in the middle east are big, rear-wheel drive V8's.  We can't get those here.  Maybe if we could, their sales would go up here, also.  The Japanese people aren't buying Japanese cars, either.  Because they like ours, and we like theirs.  Although ours are built better, safer, and stronger.  God Bless GM.  Part of the problem, also, is that we are being brain-washed in to thinking the sky is falling and we are going to burn up and eat each other because of Global Warming.  Wake up people, there are folks that want to destroy America, and they live next door to us.... (Liberals).

I have always owned Chevy products. My current pickup is a 2001 with 118,000 miles on it. It has its original brakes, shocks, plugs and even the same fan belt. I've never had any major repair done on it. My wife drives a 2002 trailblazer it just turned over 124,000 miles and has not been in the shop for any of the same items mentioned. I sold my previous silverado with 154,000 miles six years ago and still see it on the road today. I don't need to be sold on american quality. I also get an average 20 mpg on each vehicle, thats not so impressive by todays standards but I'm not driving impractical and uncomfortable midget mobiles.

we need to bring back the real Americaqn cars of the 70,s .. they ran forever  and you could fix them with two screw drivers a pair of pliers and an adjustable wrench. add teh new feul injections electronic ignitions and galvanized steel , and these are unbeatrable cars. America is losing money on buying disposable imports and making our cars that way. lets face it .. A Toyoiata Camry is a car want to be . and look at a chevy Aveno ?  can we say .." TRASH"!!!!

I only buy quality.

I have a 1988 535is, that is a quality engineered and built machine. I also have a newer 528i. Also pure quality. I have made a number of attempts to buy an american brand only to be dissapointed with the quality of materials and quality of ride. Same goes for all the japanese brands.

Lets face it, the best cars are German.
