North Dakota oil discovery called biggest in U.S.

Watch out, Texas!  Get back California, Louisiana and Alaska! North Dakota and Montana are on track to knock all of you off your high horses as the oil capital of the United States.

According to a government report published today that has stunned the energy biz, a thin layer of rock known as the Bakken Shale, located a couple of miles under the Badlands, holds up 4.3 billion barrels of recoverable oil, making it the single largest oil reservoir that federal scientists have ever assessed.

At today’s price of $110 per barrel, that puts the value at $475 billion, give or take a few bill, or more than enough to make people think ND stands for North Dallas. Or maybe that’s New Dhabi.

The U.S. Geological Survey only assessed the Bakken Shale in U.S. boundaries, so the full extent of the find, which stretches north into the Canadian provinces of Saskatchewan and Manitoba, will ultimately be larger. Already the estimate for “technically recoverable” oil – or that which is exploitable using current technology -- is 25 times higher than the last time the USGS surveyed the area, in 1995.

Around 105 million barrels of oil had been produced from the Bakken through the end of 2007, so the idea that energy producers may get 40 times that amount has brought a lot of attention to the area’s top drillers and leaseholders. Investors pushed stocks like EOG Resources and Continental Resources to all-time highs in the past two weeks in anticipation of the report’s publication. See my column today, "Dakota Oil: Persia on the Plains," for more investment angles.

The USGS said in in its press release that its new Bakken estimate is larger than all of its other oil assessments of the lower 48 states and is the largest "continuous" oil accumulation it has ever assessed. It said a "continuous" oil accumulation means that the oil resource is dispersed throughout a geologic formation rather than existing as discrete, localized occurrences. The next largest continuous oil accumulation in the U.S. is in the Austin Chalk of Texas and Louisiana, with an estimate of 1 billion barrels of technically recoverable oil.

Government geologists said they worked with North Dakota Geological Survey, a number of petroleum industry companies and independents, universities and other experts on the project. To hear a podcast of the USGS scientists Brenda Pierce and Rich Pollastro discussing their study, click here.

for about 4 years in the 1980 I worked on an oil and natural gas seismic exploration drill team, and I can personally tell you thru the 12 states we went thru mostly in the west we found enough evidence of vast amounts of oil and natural gas reserves that these companies have been sitting on for over20 years now, waiting for just a time such as this that they can make the most profit from it. This so called  find in North Dakota does not surprise me at all, I was there over 20 years ago and the data did not lie. But when the gas got cheap we all lost our jobs and there has never been alot of neww looking or further exploration. there was no need the already know and have know for 20 years where it all was and where it all is

We still need to cut our dependence on OIL, period. More oil doesn't help. LESS OIL CONSUMPTION HELPS.

we don't need more fossil fuels in our environment!

quit building McMansions and move within biking/walking distance of one's job!

Minnesota is rebuilding one collapsed,  overused/under-repaired  bridge and has discovered multiple other dangerous ones.

yet our Governor, who is being touted as a V.P. running mate for McCain,

in all his "WISDUMB" just vetoed a sorely needed mass transit link between Mpls/St. Paul.   we need to wise up America, and use our resources more efficiently or we are destined to become a 2nd tier economy

Oh Please!  It doesn't matter if the oil is truly there and accessible for drilling or not.  Between the government, the "green" pushers and the oil companies it won't change a thing.  Fuel prices will still remain so high we can't keep up on the middle class wages not going anywhere and inflation prices constantly rising.  I grew up in the Permian Basin in Texas with oil fields all around.  In the 80's the government decided we needed to support foriegn countries to show good will and put hundreds of hard working people out of jobs and their homes over night by capping fully productive wells.  I had friends, family lose everything.  We've had the oil right here in America all along but instead of our government FIRST taking care of those here at home they are more concerned with foriegn countries and lining their own pockets.  How many foriegn debts has our government waived for the "goodness of foriegn relations" ??  Yet our taxes go up, the rich get richer, the poorer get poorer and the oil in our country sits untapped.

no mater what OUR GREAT government will not let us tap this oil or any other for that matter and use it here in AMERICA OUR LAND ...They all want it to be either poor or rich and forget the middle class all together and that is going to be Their biggest mistake ever who will support all the programs out there the rich??? Yeah right!! we need to open oil in this country and also take the oil we have been selling to china from OUR won Alaska pipe line and give it to US the AMERICAN people and dont worry about any other country and get this dam country back to being totally independent forget the rest of the dam world and worry about us!!! wake up people its almost too late ...our gas should be cheap as hell and our economy thriving but no BUSH is and has ruined this whole USA and is trying to get the world to hate us even more and is doing a dam good job at it....this is America and We the AMericans are who OUR government should be taking care of and catering to not some other country...SCREW THEM ALL ya think they give a rats ass about us and our country...does any other country say hey Mr. Bush we will help you with your problems we got tons of oil...yeah like that will ever happen. It is our oil use the *** here!

Or learn to get a job nearby and dont use gas. Or use a motorcycle or something.

Global warming crap can be talked about all they want, the fact is even if all the cars and factorys stopped right this minute, the warming would continue and there is nothing we can do. All we can do is slow our output to decrease the effect.

Well said Bill Carli ! ;soon the middeleast will be the laughing stock of the world

Drill baby, Drill. go invest lets help our country.

Don't get exited folks! At 20 million barrels per day consumption 4.3 billion barrels of oil is a 5.375 month supply. Shale oil is expensive oil. This find will do little to nothing to releave the pain at the pump. It is good news for the oil industry though.

Check out BSIC.OB.  Nice penny stock withs lots of potential.  Maybe, with any luck,  some of us working for a honest living can make a dime or two off the coming boom.
