Apple's fast climb to top music seller

Apple has become the top music seller in the U.S. The company made the announcement today after Ars Technica leaked an internal e-mail with details. Just a couple of months ago, Apple passed Best Buy to become the #2 music retailer. Now, the company is topping the charts.

Apple had 19% of the market in January, and Wal-Mart was in second place with 15%, according to the leaked e-mail. It's worth noting an obvious difference between the two: Apple is an all-digital music seller, while most of Wal-Mart's sales are physical CDs. Best Buy, Amazon and Target rounded out the top five spots. Some tech blogs thought that January's numbers were skewed due to people redeeming iTunes gift cards recieved over the holidays. But it looks like Apple stayed on top in February as well.

Shares of the company rose nearly 3% today to close at $151.61. Here's what others had to say about the news:

Engadget: "Of course, there's a lot of 2008 left to go, so Wally might make a comeback -- it was the overall champ last year -- but Apple's achievement is still a major milestone for digitally distributed content, and we hope to see a lot more iTunes-like services on that list soon."

Silicon Alley Insider: "This is impressive, but also expected."

The Unofficial Apple Weblog: "It will now be interesting to see if Apple can hold on to the top spot in the long run. In any case, this is a watershed moment and brings the mainstream death of the CD that much closer into view."

good... this is good news for the environment.... no more wasted packaging...

I just received a refund for ITunes because I couldn't use their music, so be careful if you don't buy their IPod you will have trouble. I had no problems with Walmart or Amazon.

I'm old school. I not only want CD's, but LP albums, cassettes, & even 8-tracks. I collect these items & have equipment that works to play them on. Besides, one of the big deals on LPs was indeed the artwork & packaging, & they have their own sound quality also, & incidentally are making a comeback to a degree. Downloads, who needs it?!

This is not all that surprising since people have known for years just how much the music industry makes off their consumers.

I agree that itunes is the way to go, however, I find it still very frustrating that they still restrict the number of copies you can rip as well as the fact their offerings do not include all new releases or artists. This coupled with their constant releases of artists music that look like new albums but are really their versions of greatest hits packages redone needs to be addressed. CDs are close to death but be careful what you wish for especially if you lose your hard drive with all of that downloaded music on it. Once it's gone it's gone!

this might be a dumb question, but I got an iPod for Christmas and am unable to download any songs from Rocket MP3 on it. Do those only accept iTunes?

And why in the world, is the first comment about this on the environment, as opposed to how this shift in market trends will have repercussions in other aspects of how musical, (or any form of art content) information is obtained in a capitalistic system?

The world has survived natural disasters of epic proportions including volcanoes, major earthquakes and meteorites hitting it. It will still be here no matter what we do.

Good for the environment - bad for all non ipoders everywhere - let the games begin !

Very impressive! I must agree with Anthony; no waster,  less expensive to purchase and we are saving the environment.  Good Work iTunes and Apple!

Let's see more companies become more aware of the useless expenses..

Hey "Anthony". Not everyone has a computer(I do of course). And even people with computers still prefer to purchase music the old fashioned way. Not everyone is sixteen years old, junior. Think of all the people(like myself) who were in music retail that lost our livelihoods because of the internet.
