Yahoo has been busy, busy, busy with new product rollouts these days, perhaps trying to make itself more valuable as it negotiates an acquisition deal with Microsoft. The newest offering, unveiled today, is a Web site called Shine. The site is for women, and while it seems to be a little lacking in real news (what, women don't care about finance?), it thankfully doesn't read like a Cosmo cover.
If Shine can stand out from the legions of other sites that target the female demographic, Yahoo could have a pretty nifty little advertising vehicle on its hands.
Here's what some others are saying about Shine's debut today:
Susan Mernit: "Shine feels so fluffy that for me, I can't see it becoming my daily start page--in truth, it's so niche, or so mega-aggregator
niche--that it feels not that smart, or not smart enough for me, my
friends, or any of the women I know to use as the destination site."
Between the Lines: "The move illustrates one of the biggest assets the portal could bring
to Microsoft -- some media sense and the ability to target demographics."
Kara Swisher: "More importantly, it is clearly a good market for Yahoo’s advertisers,
who all aim to reach this high-spending but underserved demographic
online."
Jason Calcanis: "Wow, really dumb idea on Yahoo part. I would kill myself if I was
running the publisher network right now. Can you imagine what it would
be like to go to WSJ, Jane, iVillage, Glam, or Sugar publishing and try
and get them to support Yahoo services?"
Yahoo shares fell just 6 cents today to close at $28.93.
Disclosures: I don't own shares of any companies mentioned in this
post. And while Microsoft owns this blog, Microsoft does not control,
censor or otherwise have any editorial influence over what I write.
