AT&T says it can't find skilled workers

AT&T pledged in 2006 to bring back 5,000 customer service jobs to the U.S. from India, eliminating its low-wage foreign call centers. But CEO Randall Stephenson said this week he can't find enough skilled workers to fill the jobs.

"We're having trouble finding the numbers that we need with the skills that are required to do these jobs," Stephenson told a business group in San Antonio. So far, only 1,400 jobs have been successfully brought back here.

Stephenson gave an especially candid speech, deploring the fact that the high school dropout rate is as high as 50% in some cities.

"If I had a business that half the product we turned out was defective or you couldn't put into the marketplace, I would shut that business down," he said. Ouch. He added that his company can do work in Bangalore, India, just as easily as it could in the U.S.

"I know you don't like hearing that, but that's the way it is," he said.

Perhaps Stephenson should consider this: AT&T is only paying a $30,000 annual salary for those jobs. Raise the salary, and you might just find those skilled workers.

AT&T shares slid less than 1% today to close at $37.64.

Update: I found 16 customer service openings on AT&T's Web site today. They are located across the country, in cities like El Paso, Tex.; Goldsboro, N.C.; Louisville, Ky; Metairie, La; Orange Park, Fla. and Winston Salem, N.C. A $30,000 salary will go farther in those cities than in New York City, as one commenter astutely noted.

$30K in WV is a lot different than in NYC.....the US is a big place....what the story DIDN'T say is: where is he trying to find these employees for that wage? I'd be interested in knowing that.....if it's San Antonio, maybe he should check conditions elsewhere...

I am skilled and ready to work, Mr. Stephenson. I will work for the $30,000 mentioned in the article. I live in the Tampa Bay area and can find many more people like me willing to work for you. By the way, my American- English language skills are excellent. People can understand me!

And then again, how hard is AT&T really looking?

Does he think  people are that foolish!  If he really wanted to hire americans he could find the skilled workes needed.  Only some cities may have 50% drop out rates but what about the over 100 +cities that have educated people ready and willing to work.  Wait.... the real truth is that he does not want the cost that comes with hiring americanS...after all it is much cheaper to use labours oversees.

As George Carlin Says....it's BS, and it's bad for ya!

God Love you, Randal. I con speek Engalish reel good, but my spellin is bad. Soometime it aint Conveinance to spellin to good.

I have a Wife who is more than qualified to do this job and is looking for a good job. She would definitely work for the $30,000. We live in the Fort Myers, Florida area and there are plenty of qualified, English speaking people, to do these jobs. She will start tomorrow March 28, 2008. Please send an application to my E-mail address. Her previous job was handling 7 lines in a phone room by herself.

I worked for AT & T a few years ago and I wouldn`t suggest anyone work for them. They are full of BS from bottom management staff to the upper. I had to work under a blumbering alcoholic that management knew about. Needless to say I eventually got fired because I had a run in  with the drunk. I was then targeted and placed under a magnification glass. They brought up some bogus accusation charges of sexual harrassment. Unfortunately, I worked in a right to fire state and couldn`t sue them like I wanted to. They`re better off overseas.

Corporate greed these Big business types dont get it and probably wont untill we drag the out of their big houses ant tar and feather them like in the good old days when America was a great country.  These types of people miss the good old days of slavery and they cant do it here so they take this mentality overseas and screw up America's image.  God Bless the pinhead upper class in this country who love the undocumented house keepers and gardeners both Republicans and Democrates our political leaders suck

Randall Stephen: I live in Chicago, IL and I have excellent customer services skills. The customer service used in indian vocabulary is not that clear that sound like they are on a cell phone. We are tried of sending out job to other countries. So that you Mr. Stephen can be a big CEO.
