Insiders bail as McDonald's brews trouble

Conventional wisdom says McDonald’s should continue to have great success as the economy slows and consumers trade down restaurants just as they’ve been trading down to Wal-Mart for their shopping needs. Sounds great, except that the company's insiders beg to differ: Over the last six months, nearly 760,000 shares worth some $43 million have been sold.

A significant amount by any measure, this works out to roughly a 20% liquidation of the insiders according to Thomson Financial. CEO James Skinner sold 35% of his stake. Gloria Santona, the general counsel, parted with more than half of her shares. Jose Armario, responsible for Canada and Latin America, traded away 80% of his holdings.

My guess is that they’re less than confident about the big McCafé push. Better drip coffee is one thing, and McDonald’s definitely has good drip coffee. But going head-to-head with Starbucks is another. Don’t kid yourself: McDonald’s will never be Starbucks -- and by the look of things it probably doesn’t want to be Starbucks anyway. There just isn’t any synergy between burgers, fries, and cappuccinos.

Consider demographics and brand personality. Starbucks is urban, born in Seattle, and populated by graduate students looking for single-origin coffees from Africa. McDonald’s is Mainstreet U.S.A., packed full of blue-collar men, moms and kids, and broke teens ordering off the dollar menu. If you can’t picture a truck driver from Wyoming ordering a double-pump vanilla non-fat latté, then McCafé is doomed -- especially with all the competition entering the field.

That isn’t to say all hope is lost. Going upscale with better chicken items, salads and fruits, and remodeled restaurants has been successful. Better quality hamburgers featuring Angus beef are being tested in select markets. Efforts should continue to focus on improving and expanding the food offerings, taking into account the lessons of the Arch Deluxe failure.

McDonald’s head chef Dan Coudreaut, labeled the “Most Powerful Chef in America,” has already demonstrated success with the Asian Salad and McSkillet Burritos. Given the continued emphasis on fitness and health in society, there is a big opportunity for McDonald’s to clean up its image. Offering fresh vegetables in Happy Meals would be a good start. Bringing back the deli sandwiches would be another.

Until then, rising food prices will pinch margins hard, sales will drag, and free cashflow will be tied up in the coffee fiasco. Maybe shares won’t tumble, but it’s hard to see them going much higher from here.

(Disclosure: I don't own any shares of the companies mentioned in this post.)

All the insiders did just what I did - liquidated some of their McD holdings because it had made a tidy profit for me and I wanted to invest in something else for awhile.  You don't sell when a stock is down - but when it is up and/or reached a plateau.  As for who will drink their coffee - everybody - including truck drivers who wouldn't been seen dead going into a Starbucks but go into McD's every day.  Your logic is faulty.

Mc Donalds food is just fundamentally bad. There are lots of good choices for burgers that only cost a few extra dollars. I think kids like it better than adults...I can't stand the place anymore but still visit some of the competitors like Wendys, In & Out, or Jack & Box.

The only way for McDonalds to really win back my business is to get better tasting fries and burgers.

"McCafe?"  Please.   It's just a ploy to get more people to ingest more of Mickey D's unhealthy foods.  Maybe they should focus on making food healthier instead of trying to hide it's food's true effects on people's cardiovascular systems.

I gave up Mcdonald's and the likes over 10 years ago, and my heart has benefited greatly. However, if I could make $$ on the stock I would, but the selloff signals are to be reconed with.

I went to a McD restaurant in Deming, NM. The billboard sign on the freeway advised the place opened at 5 am. Upon arriving at 5:05 AM, I found the door locked and a couple of ladies sitting on the counter. Upon looking in the door I observed both people slide off the counter and hide in the back part of the kitchen. I felt if the people were like this why should I spend my money at McD's. I'd rather get my coffee at Starbucks. Service did not seem to be up front at this paticular McD's.

I am a Truck Driver in Wyoming and yes I do like my double pump vanilla non-fat latte once in a while. Watch what you say before you print it. Maybe not that, but i do like a double shot Mocha once in awhile.

If McCafe is in hospitals, then the hospitals will never run out of work when it comes to bypasses and stents for heart paitents.  The food may taste good, and it may be cheaper than grocery shopping, but it's NOT healthier by ANY means, and that's the bottom line.

While visiting Hawaii 2 years ago I stopped for breakfast at a McDonalds.

They were touting their "New and Improved" coffee.  I thought that this was a local issue (they also have Spam on the menu).  Having enjoyed McDonalds coffee for 40+ years I have had only one more cup of their coffee stateside.

What a disappointment.

maybe Mcdonalds should teach some of their employees(supervisors) at their franchises to have and display a little more Americanism and politeness to their customers. I went to a drive thorough recently and I was given fries with no salt or catsup and a fish sandwich with no cheese?!! and when I asked the supvervisor about it....she showed no respect...and when I told her I was an American (which meant that I thought I deserve respect since I was respectful to her) She shouted that I was a racist!!!!!

I agree that McDonalds has got to go more healthy.  I've been vegetarian for 17 years, and I know several vegetarians.  We still like quick healthy food.  Burger King offers Garden Burgers, and they have for years.  Where is Mickey D's on this?  It would be nice to have just some nice garden salad selections, that aren't bland and boring.  There's all kinds of things you can do with food out there, that is still heathly and tasty!  Times are changing, they need to change with it.
