High oil = bankruptcy for auto makers and airlines?

Several companies in the airline and auto sectors could face bankruptcy this year with American Airlines and Ford at the head of the list

American Airlines dropped 10% yesterday to hit $10.20. The shares have not been at that level since 2004. American lost money three of the last five years. It had a small net profit in 2007 of just over $500 million on $22.9 billion in revenue. The margin is razor thin.

In 2007, American also had interest expense of over $900 million. Long-term debt is about $9.4 billion.

In an industry which is as well-known for its bankruptcies as it is for its bad food, 2008 is shaping up as a truly awful year. Fuel prices are rocketing as oil passes above $107 a barrel. The recession is likely to put a drag on passengers, both business and pleasure. The $500 million that American made last year could turn to a loss of several billion in the blink of an eye.

The situation in the auto industry is as bad, for many of the same reasons, especially high oil prices which have gas at almost $3.50 and a market where customers will wait one more year to buy a car because they are as poor as church mice.

Shares in Ford fell to $5.58 yesterday. In early 2006 when several credit analysts said Ford might have to seek bankruptcy protection its share were higher than they are now.

Ford is going to be squeezed and squeezed hard this year. Commodities costs for car components are rising rapidly. Lehman Brothers has estimated that this could add over $350 to the cost of each vehicle. Ford and other car companies cannot get buyers into dealers, even with large incentives. The U.S. car industry could lose over one million domestic unit sales compared to 2007 -- over $25 billion in revenue. Twenty percent of that could come from Ford based on its market share and the rate at which its sales are dropping.

The Ford family will obviously resist any effort to take the firm into bankruptcy, but if the price of building a car moves much higher in the second half and sales are off 15% in North American for 2008, the choices may come down to one.

Ford   along  with other  us  manufactuers   must  produce   a   product  that fits  the needs   of  consummers   for   economy  quality  and  price  or  someone  else  will do  it  perhaps  overseas  for  us  simple  folk.

this drop in stock price is because all contracts between the three work groups are being negotiated(fleet service, fligt attendants, piolits).American does this to show they have no money to give us raises. They do this every time contract talks are going on,after all contracts are settled you will see american do very well. The employees are very dedicated to making this the best airline in the world.

Recession? Looks more like a Depression to me.

Air lines are not helping themselves by being cheap,  such as etra money for luggage will soon be charged, delayed or lost luggage, luggage damage, delayed and canceled flights when there seems to be no reason such as weather.    Disregard for passanger needs, overbooking, overstressed employees that after time just seem to achieve a don't care attitude. Stupid TSA rules and the people they hire are not condusive to encourage flying. If at all possible we avoid flying anyplace, tickets are expensive people feel the airline execs are taking advantage of the employees.  Scheduling is BAD, it seems airlines schedule most flights in any given airport at the same time, then nothing for hours.

I can see why fewer people are flying these days. Not only is it the cost of flying but the shear hassel of it. I myself will avoid flying if I think I can drive the distancein 10 hours just to avoid the hassel.

Why can't we have a pre screening for frequent flyers ( a passenger lic. of some sort) that permits us to walk through.

If we can screen people for concealed weapons permits we should be able to permit some one to walk onto the plan.

I dont like to fly

It seems the rich get richer. Even when I was growing up at least we could travel by car and go to the local amusement park. Now even a couple cannot afford to travel nor visit the local amusement park they are lucky to pay their bills and be able to buy Groceries and gas. We keep allowing everyone else to buy up America instead of supporting America! Pretty soon we not only won't have land for grazing animals and crops but we won't have anyone to transport them. Gas affects alot more than getting on the road, It affects food prices, Feed for our livestock, tourism, and on down or up the line. Americans are looking at becoming a third world country before long at this rate. I thought this was the land of opportunity, not the right to take as much as you can from those who have less and that less seems to be worse each year because everyone has become so money hungry and forgotten values which truely made America in the first place.  Maybe going back to horse and buggies wouldn't be a bad thing. Good for the air and a bale of hay last longer and is cheaper than gas!!!

The American car industry has to blaim itselves for it's present troubles by resisting technical advances for the last 50 years.

WHAT DOES FORD MOTOR COMPANY HAVE TO DO WITH "AIRLINES GOING BANKRUPT"? YOU PEOPLE AT MSN ARE THE TYPICAL OF THE NEWS OUTLETS THAT WANT TO SEE THE DEM'S BACKIN OFFICE (GET ACCRATE OR STAY STUPID AS YOU ARE AND BIASED-I'VE QUIT READING YOU ARTICLES AS SERIOUS ADVICE)

When Honda starts offering incentives, it'll be really bad!
