Apple on pace to become top music seller

Apple's iTunes store has surpassed Best Buy to become the #2 music retailer in the country, second only to Wal-Mart in sales. And an analyst from the NPD Group, which tracks these sorts of things, said that Apple is on track to catch Wal-Mart this year.

Apple shares dipped less than a percentage point yesterday to close at $119.15. Best Buy shares rose 3% to $46.50, and Wal-Mart shares rose 2% to $51.40.

This news says much about the way we consume music. NPD notes that 1 million people stopped buying CDs last year, a trend most apparent in young people. In 2007, 48% of teens didn't buy a single CD -- up from 38% in 2006. So retailers like Wal-Mart, Best Buy and Target -- who mainly sell physical CDs -- are going to see music sales slide.

But what does the news say about Apple? Is the rise to No. 2 a result of its own sales savvy, or is iTunes the lucky beneficiary of the CD's decline? A closer look at the numbers sheds a little more light.

Apple said today it has sold 4 billion songs on iTunes. It hit the 3 billion song mark on July 31 of last year, so it took about seven months for iTunes to sell 1 billion songs. But guess what -- it took seven months to sell the previous billion songs (from 2 billion to 3 billion). The Los Angeles Times reads into these numbers and figures that people are buying less music than they used to. I'm not so sure. The only thing you can get from these numbers is that iTunes music sales have flattened. People could still be buying music but from other sources, such as Amazon's MP3 store.

Then there's the piracy angle. NPD says that 19 percent of U.S. Internet users were active on peer-to-peer file sharing networks last year, and that music sharing grew aggressively among teens. While the number of people on those networks appears to have hit a plateau, the number of files each user downloaded increased.

In fact, only 10% of the music acquired in the U.S. last year was downloaded legally, through iTunes or another online music retailer. Nearly 30 million people bought music legally -- 5 million more than in 2006 -- and many of those were in the 36-to-50 age group

So Apple's music sales are flat, and illegal song-swapping continues unabated. Amazon and other competitors are moving in as well. Analysts are starting to suspect iPod saturation.

So go ahead and pat yourself on the back, Apple, but watch out. In the music business, #2 isn't what it used to be.

Some of us use international web sites where you can download perfect quality songs for about 20 cents per song.  Much more economical than I Tunes.  and for all those who say who buys from Wal Mart?  Think about it.  It's the people that are not on the internet especially the ones on the internet posting messages to articles like we do.  And to the people who say music these days suck and those that say albums only have a few good songs on them....yeah welcome to the world of music.  It has been like that for decades and decades.  You just don't remember because the only albums you still have from the 70s, 80s, and 90s are the classics which were rare then as they are rare now.

Nasferatu, how can you say that downloaded music is "only good for the crooks and those who can't afford the real deal" when 4 billion songs have been purchased legally on iTunes? On another note, the benefits of iPod's are numerous. It's much easier to search through an iPod to find the songs or playlist you want to hear than to change a CD everytime you want to play something different. In addition, they are much less bulky than a CD player if you want to work out with music and provide music that is more tailored to your taste than the radio without the commercials.

I For one will never shop at best buy again after the way I was treated today

The quality of MP3 is as good as a cd.  Plug an IPOD or any other MP3 device to a good steroe receiver and listen to it, then try a cd, you will not noticed the difference!  Also, the advantage of a MP3 player or a MP3 stored in a computer, is the quantity of music you can store vs the space it takes to do it.  Imagine 700 cd's vs a 500 GB Hard Drive! where you can store more than 700 cd's.  So, your only limit is the hard drive space.  I got over 120 days of music in my computer, I just plug it in to my receiver, hit random and that's all she wrote!  CD's are out, same happend to the LP's, you got to evolve with technology.  I bet there are some out there that would have a hores and buggy instead of a car!

What about the people who actually like a better quality than MP3?  That's what cds are for...I certainly don't want to pay the same price for lesser quality...maybe people are ok with sub-par...

limewire people

I often buy CD's, and I've been pleased to see that more previously out of print titles are being released.  It would be sad if this trend ends because of illegal and legal downloading.  There is plenty of great new music out there.  The record companies and the media just won't promote it.  It's easier to sell crap wrapped in a sexy package I guess.

about radio - it plays such a limited variety of music it is hardly worth listening to.

all of you who prefer buying the actual cd are getting old.  the future is virtual and electronic, and the ipod is the first generation of music and video storage.  hand held devices will soon allow you to read the liner notes and lyrics, watch song videos, listen to artist interviews and much more in a hologram in your lap.

Right on dski.  Some people on these boards are just simply morons who can't step outside of their own mind and life to understand that maybe some things have advantages that they don't think about.  I personally have 23,000 songs sitting on 2 different Ipods.  I can take all those songs in my car and store them in a small part of my glove box.  Imagine needing storage in your car for 23,000 songs on cds.  Or how bout when I go for a run? yeah I have all those songs at a fingertip.  But hey those CDs sure are great??

downloading from itunes is fast and easy, inexpensive compared to cd's, and they have amazing music the radio will never play(ever).Plus its more eco friendly if u think about it-no cd wrapper and plastic for some dipsh*t to throw on the street
