Did the eBay boycott work?

The weeklong boycott of the eBay auction site ends today. But did it accomplish anything?

Fed up with recent fee hikes and other policy changes, some eBay sellers decided to boycott the site from Feb. 18 through today. Third-party tracking sites say auction listings have dropped about 13% since the strike started to 13 million items listed.

Ebay shares dipped slightly over the past week, but have returned to where they started -- at just under $28. The share price closed up 30 cents to $28.01 today on news that Shopping.com CEO Josh Silverman will now run eBay's Skype online telephony unit.

Ebay says it wasn't affected by the boycott, which I find hard to believe. Unfortunately, any analysis of the boycott's impact is nearly impossible because eBay ran a one-day promotion on Feb. 13 that cut listing fees to 20 cents. That alone was estimated to boost listings to 16 million from 12 million. Those listings could remain live for up to 10 days, which overlapped with the boycott week.

Also hurting the boycott was the sweet story Friday about the legally blind record store owner in Pennsylvania who sold his music collection on eBay for the asking price of $3 million. Yesterday, it came out that the bid was a fraud, but the seller says other buyers are lined up.

The boycott did nothing to change eBay's policies, and the new rate structure remains in place. But if nothing else, it highlights the growing discontent among eBay's user base and, more importantly, the increasing willingness to act on that discontent. Today a seller boycotts. Tomorrow, that seller might move to Amazon, or perhaps consider setting up an independent online store and advertising through Google

The Web site Power Sellers Unite has been discussing whether to extend the eBay boycott. Commenters seemed to be split on whether that would work.

"You have to hit companies like eBay in their pocket book," wrote one seller. "It's not an easy thing to do when they have so many millions of auctions."

"A boycott won't really do anything to change eBay," wrote another. "Never has, never will. What will change eBay is if everyone leaves. Ebay will crumble and other sites with more compassionate managers will benefit. And the sooner the better."

Haven't ya all heard of craiglist? I don't know about the fees but I

have seen stuff that should give ebay a reason to pause and

reconsider. Like ebay isn't making  a ton of $.  Now it's all about

the $.

Ive been ripped off using Ebay as a buyer and seller, They got there cut of the fraud and do very little to help the victims. I will never use Ebay again except to find sellers that sell outside Ebay grasp.

eBy means GREED, The word is spreading fast that they are a crooked outfit and care nothing for thier customers.

e-bay charged me for a re-list that was to be free.E-bay never anyone at home. They suck

We joined the boycott but I don't see where it made much difference. They will get a small bump when those of us that held off for a week jump back in to list. Like many others I have been exploring other sites and will probably start listing on a couple; eventually leaving ebay alltogether. I think it will get everyone wound up again when the majority of the sellers find out that as of May you will no longer be able to leave negative or nutural feedback for a bad buyer. With any luck I will be finished with Ebay by then.

Boycott Ebay forever, they can't be trusted anymore. The new CEO is well on the way to finishing off what was already tarnished.

Ebay is a total rip-off!!!  I was suspended for some stupid reason, and then when I tried to figure out what happened, I ended up getting 5 negative feedbacks because I couldnt communicate with the sellers, and then I was permanently suspended because I received so many negative feedbacks in two weeks. Go figure!  I just walked away...and dont let me begin with PAYPAL...ebay will use PAYPAL to do their dirty work as well, and if you try to work around using PAYPAL, ebay will force you to use PAYPAL as the main source of business between buyers & sellers, or you cant "sell" on ebay.  Lets look for something better than ebay!!!!

When ebay started up, we were good for them and they were good for us.  Once they went public the slide down has been pretty steady.

Now they only have eyes for the shareholders. Screw the mom and pops who helped make it what it is today. Eventually, there will be less and less room for those little mom and pops who sell their antiques and such.

In my estimation, eBay will end up being much like a super-duper version of Walmart.  The thing is, I'd just as soon drive a few miles to Walmart than buy on ebay.  And I'll start going back to the antique stores to find the interesting things that I used to buy on eBay.

ebay sucks!!!

I stopped selling on ebay a year ago. Won't go back. Fees & stuff took 45% of sale price. What a Scam...
