Would you pay $100 a month for wireless?

Price war! Two words consumers love to hear. In this case, the war is among wireless carriers unveiling unlimited calling plans for heavy phone users.

Verizon started it all by announcing a $100 plan for unlimited voice. AT&T and T-Mobile USA joined in with similarly-priced plans, but T-Mobile added text messaging as well.

That leaves everyone waiting to hear from Sprint, the last of the big four carriers. UBS telecom analyst John Hodulik thinks Sprint will undercut everyone with an unlimited plan priced at $60-$80 a month. Hodulik thinks Sprint will make the announcement in the next few weeks.

That's got Wall Street in a tizzy, and telecom stocks took a tumble today as analysts slashed their ratings and feared for tough times ahead. A Credit Suisse analyst downgraded the entire sector to "market weight" from "overweight," citing the price war and macroeconomic weakness.

Verizon shares fell today but began a remarkable climb this afternoon, closing down less than 1% to $35.20. AT&T shares dropped 4% to close at $34.29. Sprint shares fell nearly 6% to $8.71.

The big question is how exactly this price war will sway consumers. Most people don't pay anywhere near $100 for wireless service, opting for cheaper plans with limited minutes. Now that the prices of unlimited plans have dropped, will people upgrade so they can talk all they want? Or, will carriers see downgrades by high-spending customers, the ones who previously paid hundreds of dollars a month for unlimited service?

One analyst, Michael Nelson of the Stanford Group, said he thinks downgrades are more likely than upgrades. And that's what's got telecom investors nervous.

Would you want a $100 monthly wireless bill? That's a pretty steep price for the average wireless user. But at least you wouldn't have to worry about going over your minutes. Let me know in the comments.

Would I pay $100 a month? You Bet!! Why?  Because at $100/mo. I'd be saving nearly $120 over what I pay per month right now!  AT&T didn't have an 'unlimited' plan and I use nearly 8k minutes each month, so unlimited would.be.great!

have heard for years europe has much better system (rates on packages) than we do...for 4 years have been ripped off by sprint because live in rural area, and even it don't work well. what I'm looking for is the one that spots rural areas opportunity as the walmart of communications...land line, cable, cell, dsl all in one package at decent set rate like have heard they have in europe.....my total communications bill is over 500.00 per month so how fast do you think I will jump to someone at flat 250.00 per month?  yep....been ready for it for 4 years...strongly suspect its congress that just will not let it happen in our country because of the lobbist.....this piece meal system we have here is lousy!

I think $100 is too much for the shape the ecomomy is in now.  A power user yes great deal.  Normal everyday working class people there are cheaper plans.  I would not pay for the service.

SUNCOM HAS BEEN UNLIMITED FOR YEARS. $69.OO PER MONTH ALL TAXES AND FEES INCLUDED

I saw the $99. unlimited and called ATT because I have 5 phones on a family plan.  I asked if they had a "unlimited" plan for people using the family plan and they said "yes"! I was then told the first line would be $199.00 a month and each additional phone on the "family plan" would be $99.00 each.    I don't think much thought has been put in to this whole thing and ATT is shooting from the hip. I mean do the math 1 cell at $199 + $99 + $99 + $99 + $99 = $599.00....But 5 seperate accounts at $99.00 each = $495.00!!! I do know that the mobility market is very lucrative and those profits will not be given up easily.

Sprint Just changed to a unlimited plan for $99 that includes everything text messages, data and calling.  I just changed 3 of our business plans to this plan and with each phone on the acct you add the price decreased by $5. Which will work great for my CEO and I because we talk alot during the day to various people on various plans. He was paying $99 dollars for a 500 min a month plan with nextel he went over 200 minutes and we were charged $99 additional for that alone.  This plan will work great for us.

No way! $100 per month for just one line? Hopefully no one signs up for this and it will crash and burn so maybe they will lower the price. Oh wait...it's Verizon... that would mean they would have to actually care about their customers and have customer service that is actually worth a...

Where do you get your facts? I don't think MOST people pay more than $100 per month on a cell phone. I have 3 cell phones, no home phone and pay less than $100 per month with T-Mobile...We average about 5000 per month. There is no way I would pay $100 per month for 1 phone.

If I had to pay $100 per month for a stupid phone I'd throw the damn thing out the window. Are all you people millionares or what? I never go over $40 a month unlimited  including internet service. Nobody does phone service with Verizon. They are worse then the Government.

this is a reply to TW.....   there was a reason that they didnt replace the blackberry.  Maybe you already did a previous upgrade.... maybe it was out of warranty... maybe it was considered customer abuse of the phone... who knows.   Those phones cost money.  A lot of money.   They are not in the business of giving phones away.
