Would you pay $100 a month for wireless?

Price war! Two words consumers love to hear. In this case, the war is among wireless carriers unveiling unlimited calling plans for heavy phone users.

Verizon started it all by announcing a $100 plan for unlimited voice. AT&T and T-Mobile USA joined in with similarly-priced plans, but T-Mobile added text messaging as well.

That leaves everyone waiting to hear from Sprint, the last of the big four carriers. UBS telecom analyst John Hodulik thinks Sprint will undercut everyone with an unlimited plan priced at $60-$80 a month. Hodulik thinks Sprint will make the announcement in the next few weeks.

That's got Wall Street in a tizzy, and telecom stocks took a tumble today as analysts slashed their ratings and feared for tough times ahead. A Credit Suisse analyst downgraded the entire sector to "market weight" from "overweight," citing the price war and macroeconomic weakness.

Verizon shares fell today but began a remarkable climb this afternoon, closing down less than 1% to $35.20. AT&T shares dropped 4% to close at $34.29. Sprint shares fell nearly 6% to $8.71.

The big question is how exactly this price war will sway consumers. Most people don't pay anywhere near $100 for wireless service, opting for cheaper plans with limited minutes. Now that the prices of unlimited plans have dropped, will people upgrade so they can talk all they want? Or, will carriers see downgrades by high-spending customers, the ones who previously paid hundreds of dollars a month for unlimited service?

One analyst, Michael Nelson of the Stanford Group, said he thinks downgrades are more likely than upgrades. And that's what's got telecom investors nervous.

Would you want a $100 monthly wireless bill? That's a pretty steep price for the average wireless user. But at least you wouldn't have to worry about going over your minutes. Let me know in the comments.

I would not pay $100.00 per month unless it included unlimited texting and included at least 1 additional phone number.  The texting issue is why I had to drop my 16-year old daughter from my Verizon family share plan because it is not "teenage friendly".  I have been with Verizon for 8 years and added my daughter to my plan 2 years ago.  When her contract ended November 2007, I took her off.  I now have only an individual plan for which I pay $40.00 a month for 450 anytime minutes.  My contract ends November 2008 and I plan to drop Verizon then and go to something better.

i have been paying 100 per month for years....the money i make from my cell phone....pay's for itself 100x over.......would be happy to see it come down to 60 bucks....

just anither way to rip off the consumer........

My home plan is $40. per month, unlimited, long distance too... so to pay for $100 for cell phone unlimited is a bit steep for me.

I can see that many people will find this deal much to their liking.  I'm not a big cell phone talker or land line for that matter.

i'am with sprint and i have been paying $99. a month for unlimited local and long distance for over 2 yrs

I have T-Mobil and my bill's have been between $51 and $53 every month for 3 year's now.   At $100 dollar's a month this plan is clearly suited for heavy talkers or people who do not know how to stay under their minutes every month and then complain later that their bills are too high.  This deal is not suited for the average cell phone user.  If you got $100 a month to spend on a cell bill ( I know I dont these day's ), then go for it, but for everyone else, there's no deal here. Bring it down to $60 or $65, with unlimited texing and data, and "maybe" they got a deal.

Absolutely insane. I use a landline - $26/mo. plus taxes. Buy 3 mo Skype card at Wally's World for $3/mo ($9 for 3 mo.) for unlimited LD. Only drawback is when we travel, then I buy a Net 10 phone or card for $30 for 2 mo. ($15/mo.) with 300 minutes - I used to use an ATT phone card (< 3 cents/min.), but pay phones are just about gone. I do end up burning off the remaining Net 10 minutes on LD calls. Total bill is 30 - 45 per mon. and

only $45 when we travel - once or twice a year.

i have used two cell phones for years (verizon, cricket) a little inconvenient but talk 10,000 minutes a month, with tax my total is 84.00

I think Helio's plan beats everyone else's.  Helio offers a $99 a month plan with unlimited everything.  Yes, that includes data too.  Unlimited minutes, unlimited text, unlimited web.  Like I said, unlimited everything.  They are available nationwide and use the satellites of verizon, sprint and alltel.  So yes, their coverage is phenomenal.

People fail to realize that AT&T had a 100 dollar unlimited plan back in 2003 but got rid of it. This is when AT&T GSM network was first started in Colorado Springs but at the time the service was shotty so I dropped it.  I would pay for it because of my job I talk alot on the phone for both official and unoffical business and I was always going over my minutes.
