Starbucks dumps T-Mobile for AT&T Wi-Fi

AT&T gets another win today. Starbucks is ditching T-Mobile and going with AT&T for its customer Wi-Fi service at 7,000 locations.

People who have a Starbucks prepaid gift card can get two hours of free Wi-Fi per day at Starbucks. Glenn Fleishman confirms that you can buy and activate a card, and then get free Wi-Fi from that day forward. Most of AT&T's broadband and U-verse customers will also have free access, but AT&T wireless customers (including iPhone users) won't get the same deal.

Surprisingly, the per-hour Wi-Fi fees will drop under AT&T to $4 for two hours or $20 per month for unlimited access. (T-Mobile used to charge $6 an hour).

The switchover will start this spring and gradually roll out on a city-by-city basis. And fear not, T-Mobile customers: you'll still be able to access Starbucks' Wi-Fi, because Starbucks likes your business too.

So Starbucks keeps customers happy and gets another way to push its prepaid cards. AT&T vastly expands its hotspot network. People will pay less for Wi-Fi access, and T-Mobile customers aren't left out in the cold.

Update: For everyone who is saying the headline of this post is misleading and that Starbucks isn't dumping T-Mobile, let me clarify. Starbucks has ended its six-year agreement with T-Mobile. AT&T is installing all new equipment at Starbucks, replacing the previous T-Mobile setup. AT&T reached a roaming agreement with T-Mobile to allow T-Mobile customers to access its network for free for the next five years. IT IS NICE TO OFFER ALL OF THESE SEVICES BUT WHEN IT REALLY COMES DOWN TO IT WHO CARES NOTHING IS FREE.

IT IS ALL ADDED INTO YOUR COFFEE GOOFY.

IF THEY SOLD IT IN CHOCOLATE CHIPS WOULD YOU EAT IT TOO ?

so what is a prepaid card-is that for wi fi that you are prepaying or pre paid  card to buy coffee that can then be used for wi fi ? confusing article

Thanks, but I'll go to Panera for free wi-fi and waaaayyyy better coffee. Starbucks Sucks.

I get free WIFI at Panera Bread. Because of their unselfishness I reward them with all my business. I am in sales and take a box of coffee, and bagels to my customers nearly everyday. I spend approx. $20.00 a day for the food and coffee, but it is reimbursed.

Wi-fi connection at Panera is free! Starbucks should buck up also! Often Panera is across the street from Starbucks or nearby so consumers can easily get their coffee and snacks in a similar environment with the luxury of free wi-fi.

$4/2hr wi-fi?! What's next, a $4 cup of flavored coffee? Er, wait...maybe everyone should relax with the Shelleyian "Starbuks BAD!"

Lure us in with the beans, then, continue to pick our wallets.  I quit going to Starbucks and now support the free wi-fi houses.

T-mobile is really expensive. Ditch them!

Bryan,

They are switching you dork, here is the press release!

IT SHOULD BE FREE , WHY PAY FOR IT ? I THINK STARBUCKS MAKES ENOUGH MONEY AND WHAT DOES IT REALLY COST THEM. I WILL NOT GO THERE WHEN OTHER PLACES GIVE IT FREE.
