Starbucks dumps T-Mobile for AT&T Wi-Fi

AT&T gets another win today. Starbucks is ditching T-Mobile and going with AT&T for its customer Wi-Fi service at 7,000 locations.

People who have a Starbucks prepaid gift card can get two hours of free Wi-Fi per day at Starbucks. Glenn Fleishman confirms that you can buy and activate a card, and then get free Wi-Fi from that day forward. Most of AT&T's broadband and U-verse customers will also have free access, but AT&T wireless customers (including iPhone users) won't get the same deal.

Surprisingly, the per-hour Wi-Fi fees will drop under AT&T to $4 for two hours or $20 per month for unlimited access. (T-Mobile used to charge $6 an hour).

The switchover will start this spring and gradually roll out on a city-by-city basis. And fear not, T-Mobile customers: you'll still be able to access Starbucks' Wi-Fi, because Starbucks likes your business too.

So Starbucks keeps customers happy and gets another way to push its prepaid cards. AT&T vastly expands its hotspot network. People will pay less for Wi-Fi access, and T-Mobile customers aren't left out in the cold.

Update: For everyone who is saying the headline of this post is misleading and that Starbucks isn't dumping T-Mobile, let me clarify. Starbucks has ended its six-year agreement with T-Mobile. AT&T is installing all new equipment at Starbucks, replacing the previous T-Mobile setup. AT&T reached a roaming agreement with T-Mobile to allow T-Mobile customers to access its network for free for the next five years. anyone that pays for overpiced coffee is not concerned what they are being charged for internet service. Money is no object....and who wants to support a coffee house that does not support our troops anyway?

Star Jacobsen actually Consumer Reports rated Alltel wireless number one overall followed by verizon, t-mobile, at&t, and then sprint.  And in remote area's your best bet is Alltel they have the nations largest wireless network, they are about 100,000 square miles larger then Verizon.

This is a very confuse article, first at the beginning of the article it says "Starbucks is ditching T-mobile which means it would be leavin it but then thru out the article it says "T-mobile customers will be able to access it to" and that we are not gettin left out in the cold? who ever typed in this article did not do a good job and didnt understand what they were typin in. Please review and re-edit this article. Very confusing and misleading.

who cares, I have free access to wi-fi and  I drink Beer not coffee.

They are dumping t-mobile. their contract is up. sooo bye bye tmobile and good ridence. buying a $5 starbucks card and then getting free wi-fi, not bad. getting the best coffee the world has to offer and a drink to go with it, what is better than that

why is it that we have to pay 5 bucks for a latte and still have to pay for wifi but i can go to caribou coffee and pay about half for the coffee which tastes better and get free wifi there.

American GERMALIZM........innacurate , mis-leading , sales propagama

Why should I pay for their so-so over priced  coffee and then have to pay to use WiFi? I can got 2 blocks to another shop and get free WiFi and better less expensive coffee.

I didn't know there was a fee for Wi-Fi at Starbuck.  I go to an other popular shop that  has free wi-fi service. I'll just say the competitor is popular for bread than coffee.  Starbuck's dining area is so small that it seems they don't want patrons to stay too long.  It's probably why I never paid attention to the prepaid service.  Well now I won't have a reason to stay longer than getting my order.

Why is there a fee? Panara Bread has wifi and does not charge at all?  Reconsider
