Starbucks dumps T-Mobile for AT&T Wi-Fi

AT&T gets another win today. Starbucks is ditching T-Mobile and going with AT&T for its customer Wi-Fi service at 7,000 locations.

People who have a Starbucks prepaid gift card can get two hours of free Wi-Fi per day at Starbucks. Glenn Fleishman confirms that you can buy and activate a card, and then get free Wi-Fi from that day forward. Most of AT&T's broadband and U-verse customers will also have free access, but AT&T wireless customers (including iPhone users) won't get the same deal.

Surprisingly, the per-hour Wi-Fi fees will drop under AT&T to $4 for two hours or $20 per month for unlimited access. (T-Mobile used to charge $6 an hour).

The switchover will start this spring and gradually roll out on a city-by-city basis. And fear not, T-Mobile customers: you'll still be able to access Starbucks' Wi-Fi, because Starbucks likes your business too.

So Starbucks keeps customers happy and gets another way to push its prepaid cards. AT&T vastly expands its hotspot network. People will pay less for Wi-Fi access, and T-Mobile customers aren't left out in the cold.

Update: For everyone who is saying the headline of this post is misleading and that Starbucks isn't dumping T-Mobile, let me clarify. Starbucks has ended its six-year agreement with T-Mobile. AT&T is installing all new equipment at Starbucks, replacing the previous T-Mobile setup. AT&T reached a roaming agreement with T-Mobile to allow T-Mobile customers to access its network for free for the next five years. Starbucks is such a ripoff. Lousy coffee while they help themselves to your wallet while telling you they are saving the world.

They don't even have a decent sugar free mocha- bitches!

about that guy who  says  he does not get signal  where Verizon gets  signal  , it is true  that he  gets good signal  for Verizon  but it could be  true  the other way around,  my  case is exactly opposite, i used have  Verizon but I just dumped Verizon  & went to T-Mobile   which  I get excellent coverage, so  i asked  a dealer who carries different carriers  , he says each carrier like Verizon , T-Mobile,AT&T  and Sprint,   has  a dead spot  where you don't get no  signal , funny thing is  each carrier has it's own  and they are different  areas  & they don't tell you that when you get the service, he says it's your job to find out whether you get a  good signal at your home & office  before you sign the contract ,  I'm happy w/ my service now  ,,,,,,, just another opinion , seems like everyone has it's own........

I refuse to go to Starbucks and others of their ilk if they are going to charge customers for internet access.  There are plenty of other businesses that do offer free internet access, and I understand almost all McDonalds will be doing just that within the next year across the nation.

what about verizon service?

I get free internet service at all starbucks in Guadalajara, Mexico.  How come it's not free in the states?

Hastings has free wifi in their cafes.

all internet (wifi) included, should be free.

It shouls be free like most other places!!

What would be newsworthy would be that Wi-Fi access at Starbucks is just wide open and free to customers - regardless of the carrier.  I'd spend more time there and buy more if that was the case.  Add a nickel to the price of a cup of coffee...

go to panera bread if you have it in your area. nicer spots with more room. hell, half the sb's you can't even walk in without bumping into something. what a rip off to be charging anyway! wake up sb, your name alone doesn't sell!!!!!
