Starbucks dumps T-Mobile for AT&T Wi-Fi

AT&T gets another win today. Starbucks is ditching T-Mobile and going with AT&T for its customer Wi-Fi service at 7,000 locations.

People who have a Starbucks prepaid gift card can get two hours of free Wi-Fi per day at Starbucks. Glenn Fleishman confirms that you can buy and activate a card, and then get free Wi-Fi from that day forward. Most of AT&T's broadband and U-verse customers will also have free access, but AT&T wireless customers (including iPhone users) won't get the same deal.

Surprisingly, the per-hour Wi-Fi fees will drop under AT&T to $4 for two hours or $20 per month for unlimited access. (T-Mobile used to charge $6 an hour).

The switchover will start this spring and gradually roll out on a city-by-city basis. And fear not, T-Mobile customers: you'll still be able to access Starbucks' Wi-Fi, because Starbucks likes your business too.

So Starbucks keeps customers happy and gets another way to push its prepaid cards. AT&T vastly expands its hotspot network. People will pay less for Wi-Fi access, and T-Mobile customers aren't left out in the cold.

Update: For everyone who is saying the headline of this post is misleading and that Starbucks isn't dumping T-Mobile, let me clarify. Starbucks has ended its six-year agreement with T-Mobile. AT&T is installing all new equipment at Starbucks, replacing the previous T-Mobile setup. AT&T reached a roaming agreement with T-Mobile to allow T-Mobile customers to access its network for free for the next five years. WI-FI os free almost everywhere.  Why pay to have wi-fi just at Starbucks !!

Wi Fi is free from many locations, except starbucks.   I go to Panera, coffee is good, great menu for lunch and again Wi Fi is free.   Why should I pay.  Starbucks more people are leaving you........

The wi-fi should be free.  In other countries, like South Korea, Starbucks does not charge anything for internet access.  I am not sure why Starbucks feels compelled to treat their US customers differently than their overseas customers.

burger king still has free wifi..service..and great iced coffee too

Try a Broadband access card. Much cheaper/month and you can use it virtually anywhere...Paying for WIFI is anequated.

For what they get for a cup of Java ,they should give you free WiFi and doughnut ..

Today, February 11, Starbucks announced they are streamlining all in store communications services under a single provider, AT&T. This includes their Wi-Fi (currently T-Mobile HotSpot) services.

There will be no immediate impact to T-Mobile HotSpot customers. Our customers will continue to have access to Wi-Fi services at Starbucks for many years.

In 2008, AT&T broadband customers will roam on T-Mobile’s HotSpot network. Then, as Starbucks transitions to AT&T, T-Mobile HotSpot Customers will be able to roam on the Starbucks Wi-Fi network provided by AT&T. There will be no additional cost for T-Mobile HotSpot customers to access Wi-Fi services at Starbucks.

As for us, we will continue moving our consumer Wi-Fi experience on to the next logical place, and this is “every home in America.” We are driving HotSpot as an experience, rather than a destination, and the debut of HotSpot @Home in 2007 was a major step in this direction.

Why pay for ANY wifi, it is and always will be free at many of SB's competitors, and the service, price and atmosphere are generally much better anyway!

Pay for wi-fi?

Bite me, Caribou Coffee has free wi-fi.

Boycott Starbucks and the OPEC inspired coffee cartel!

Who cares!  All you idiots keep shelling out $4 for a cup of java and people wonder where their money goes.  Let's see, that's over $1,400 a year for coffee.
