Dell is so over the shopping mall

The shopping mall is no place for electronics sales, it seems. Unless you're Apple.

First Palm shuts down its retail locations. Now Dell decides the mall is no place to be either. The computer maker is closing all 140 of its kiosks. Too bad for the Dell kiosk employees. The guys at the mall near me usually seemed bored, but at least they didn't harass me like the cell phone hawkers.

Did anyone buy a Dell computer as a result of those kiosks? I'm wondering if they truly were worthless, as CrunchGear states, or if they served some tenuous sales purpose.

Dell says the kiosks let people "touch and feel" its computers before buying them by phone or online. But now, the company says, it's changed its strategy to sell directly through mainstream retailers. Last month it announced a retail partnership with Best Buy, for example. So there's no need to fondle a laptop at the mall if you can just go buy one at a nearby store.

Dell shares barely moved today on the news, and are at $20.74 at this writing.

Dell, HP, IBM, Sony, Mac...blah blah blah.  I don't know how we become haters or lovers of products.  I'm a Network Engineer for a large media corporation...we have them all I can assure you.  I have a success story and a horror story for each one.  The fact reamains no matter who you are dealing with...if you buy the cheapest product and know nothing about how it works...you are primed for a negative experience.

FYI...we reformat all new systems the minute they hit the door...no matter who they came from.

They hired their employees through staffing companies, like warehouse companies hiring stocking personell.  They assumed their name would sell itself, and that "Dell" is McDonalds.  Big oversight on their part.  People want to have a cool, sexy experience - otherwise they don't buy.  Apple may not have better hiring standards (honestly don't know), but I always have a good time going into one of their stores.

I tell students to avoid Dell, the pc maker with the most proprietary parts  and costly of all makers.  They advertise in Readers Digest, what does that say?

Only bought one Dell computer and promptly returned it.  Straight out of the box the thing never worked.  I called support-in India-and got the run around.  It was a nightmare.  I will never buy one again.  The reason many people see them in work and on college campuses is that they offer discounts to bulk buyers, and they are less expensive than Apple.  I choose to stay away from Dell.  I am glad they are closing the kiosks, it always seemed like a stupid idea.  In fact, most kiosks are just plain irritating.  If you are actually interested in what they are selling, it is hard to actually look and buy when you are right  in the middle of a multitude of shoppers milling about and bumping into you.

Dell Is a great company. Their sevice is the best in the industry. They have dedicate support in north america that is top notch! very helpful and the best of all they understand me! You do have to pay a small fee for tha service but it is well worth it. I did not have to wait for a tech to answer the phone. I will only buy Dell, I have had really bad customer service from some of the big name computer companies, Dell has won my business!

I hate Dell. I got the worst computer ever from Dell.

Dell computers are very well designed and rock solid and competitively priced - almost to the extent that it's not worth the effort of purchasing separate parts and building your own. My only gripe - and Iv'e seen this first-hand is a marked deterioration in a once excellent customer service experience, which is sad.

I have bought 4 computers from Dell since 2003. Some for personal use, some for my business. I love being able to have it built with what I want. I have not had a problem with any of them. I am very pleased with the customer service that I have received from them when I have had questions, needed to upgrade memory, etc. Their customer service is what keeps me coming back. I highly recommend them as a company. I think their prices may have gone up recently, but I got an incredible deal on a laptop from them which I just bought for my business back in December. By the way, I have only bought from them online, I'm not sure what their pricing is like at the store.

I have a Dell currently 8250 series and it is 6 years old, I am getting a new one

this Friday.  I have had problems with it and calling India is no good.  I can't understand them besides they are reading out of a book on my money.  After

talking all their recommendations of several pages, we got to the first page and

it won't work.  It cost me several hundred dollars to repair what they messed up.

I will never call tech support again 3 times and out.  I will pay rather than go through that ever again.

I had already decided which Dell laptop I was going to get, but visited the mall so I could touch one before ordering.  After spending time on the web site and studying the model's features, it turns out I knew a bit more than the guy at the mall.  Of course, I wasn't the attractive 18 yera old female . . .
