Dell is so over the shopping mall

The shopping mall is no place for electronics sales, it seems. Unless you're Apple.

First Palm shuts down its retail locations. Now Dell decides the mall is no place to be either. The computer maker is closing all 140 of its kiosks. Too bad for the Dell kiosk employees. The guys at the mall near me usually seemed bored, but at least they didn't harass me like the cell phone hawkers.

Did anyone buy a Dell computer as a result of those kiosks? I'm wondering if they truly were worthless, as CrunchGear states, or if they served some tenuous sales purpose.

Dell says the kiosks let people "touch and feel" its computers before buying them by phone or online. But now, the company says, it's changed its strategy to sell directly through mainstream retailers. Last month it announced a retail partnership with Best Buy, for example. So there's no need to fondle a laptop at the mall if you can just go buy one at a nearby store.

Dell shares barely moved today on the news, and are at $20.74 at this writing.

My sister had a Dell, it was replaced by HP after after two years and a few trips to get it fixed. My finance's Dell cannot get a good picture. It runs thankfully after calling the help center and staying on the phone for hours. Other friends I have are disappointed with their personal Dell computers.

Before Dell starts to think of new ideas of selling computers, they should learn how to make computers work.

Good business move getting rid of the Kiosk outlets, and starting retailer partnerships. So, I just checked Dell's products at BestBuy. Just like Dell's online offerings they REQUIRE you to purchase a cheap 20" monitor with their computer. If you're buying a Media Center PC its going to be connected to a wide screen Plasma or LCD. Only the non Media Center models didn't include the monitor. Go figure. Dell just doesn't understand the US consumer. They don't have to wait a week for delivery or a monitor -unless Dell only wants to sell to first time computer buyers. Not many of them around anymore. I don't see Dell's PC sales industry share increasing anytime soon.

I was in the computer industry for forty years, have had 4 Dells - they were great!

Well i went to the Dadeland Mall kiosks in miami because i'm one of those guys that like touch something that I'm buying! Wasted about one hour with the sales man ordered the computer payed for it and 3 days later some how my order was canceled and no one from DELL could answer me why the oreder was candeled

Dells are great, get real.....never go to the mall though,(not a 12 yr old) so I can't comment on that part, DELL is No.1 for a reason.

FORMER DELL KIOSK "EMPLOYEE"

Not a well-thought-out venture.  Sure, you get to see and test products, but that is where the Kiosk's usefulness pretty much ended.

Dell failed to take into account that most people would think of this as a STORE, and not as an extension of Dell's "we won't make it until you order it (or ever keep it in stock)"  A good idea for a mail-order business, not so good for a brick-and-mortar or anything resembling it.

As a STORE, most people (especially the not-tech savvy) would expect their cash and checks would be accepted.  Sorry, no cash register or Telecheck.  I lost several sales because Farmer Joe and his wife drove up to the Big City to buy their granddaughter a computer only to find that we couldn't take their check.

Although most people thought we were a STORE (again, not the case), they couldn't actually buy anything AND take it home.  Understandably, many customers balked at this; after all, "Don't you have a stockroom?  Or something???"

The kiosks may have seemed like an innovative idea (inexpensive, easy to move, low overhead) but in my location it was placed in the thoroughfare of a busy mall.  Try selling a computer while you (and your customer) are being bumped by Kirkland's shopping bags and trying to talk over screaming toddlers.  Neither comfortable nor conducive to sales.

I used to see the large plasma and LCD televisions as a big attraction to customers.  This was in 2005.  Hmmm... I'm guessing that now, with millions of these being sold each year... who cares?

Most, if not all, the Dell Store employees didn't even work for Dell.  I worked for something called a "Spherion".  I had been fired (my first and last retail sales job, thank you very much) and didn't even know about it until I had worked my whole shift, went home and played the message (left by Spherion) on my answering machine -AFTER I had left to go to work.  The kiosk manager Ralph G. had not bothered to even call to inform me himself.

Dell got back what it invested -NOTHING.

OMG.  that happened to me too.  i was at the Southcenter Mall in  Seattle, WA and the kiosk guy was on the phone.  He wouldn't even turn around to say hi or at least make a sign to let me know that he was aware of my present.   I walked away feeling so mad but what can i do?

I bought a Dell laptop 2 years ago, and have had few problems with the computer,  but the phone support (in India) is horroble.

I have owned different computer and Dell seems to be the best. When our company to a power surge the only computers that started were the Dell's all the other computers needed their power supply replaced. Also we see a lot of down time on other brand computer, but never Dell, unless it's user inflicted. I also use Dell at home and never a problem, again unless user inflicted. It's a shame that they had to close the Kiosk's in the malls. It was great to just go and try them out and I always received great advice and service.

MY CO-WORKERS SAY DELL IS THE BEST!! THEY SAY DELL HAS EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SUPPORT. I BUY COMPAQ. I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT THEIR SUPPORT IS LIKE. I NEVER NEED THEM!! THAT SAYS IT ALL.
