Dell is so over the shopping mall

The shopping mall is no place for electronics sales, it seems. Unless you're Apple.

First Palm shuts down its retail locations. Now Dell decides the mall is no place to be either. The computer maker is closing all 140 of its kiosks. Too bad for the Dell kiosk employees. The guys at the mall near me usually seemed bored, but at least they didn't harass me like the cell phone hawkers.

Did anyone buy a Dell computer as a result of those kiosks? I'm wondering if they truly were worthless, as CrunchGear states, or if they served some tenuous sales purpose.

Dell says the kiosks let people "touch and feel" its computers before buying them by phone or online. But now, the company says, it's changed its strategy to sell directly through mainstream retailers. Last month it announced a retail partnership with Best Buy, for example. So there's no need to fondle a laptop at the mall if you can just go buy one at a nearby store.

Dell shares barely moved today on the news, and are at $20.74 at this writing.

Never really cared for Dell.  They've become more competitive in price since more people started building them on their own, but the low cost comes at a price of crapware on your system.  It's still lower quality parts for a higher price.

I'm not going to say Dell is a bad company, because they do have a few advantages and it's great for people who know nothing about PCs and don't have a decent tech person they can talk to otherwise.  I just won't ever get a Dell.  I've used plenty in my life that I could live several more without ever owning one.

Dells never impressed me much. Over HYPED, over PRICED computers.  I visited them in the local mall, and the sales person didn't now crap about their products.

I visited their Kiosk at Oak Park Mall in Overland Park, Kansas. What drove me off from there was not anything against Dell products, but the terrible customer service.

Unless you are an atractive 18 year old female, those guys don't even bother to say "Hi may I help you"...

Buildging computers on your own is always more expensive. I know, I always build what I use at home. Every company I have worked for uses Dell systems. I have never had any problems with Dell. They are usually the most cost effective also, unless you are looking for super cheap stuff. The kiosks were a waste of time though

I WAS VERY PLEASED WITH THE SEATTLE KIOSK AND WOULD NOT HAVE BOUGHT DELL IF NOT FOR THR KIOSK...AFTER 18 MONTHS I AM STILL VERY HAPPY....

I thought having their products where customers could actually see them was a very good idea. I bought a printer from a Dell kiosk in Trumbull, CT. I liked being able to see it and compare it other models  before buying it. The customer service was good too.

Dell has made a good move by going main stream which is ok for most, not all PCs.

I was never very impressed with their product save their high end subsidiary "Alien Ware".  They seem to be doing well with a mall based kiosk, but they are a very unique beast unto themselves. for me make mine MAC. I stopped at the local "MAC MALL" they had the very specific part that I needed and although  the place was jam-packed I had my questions answered promptly, and politely. (PS I am a short 50 +

male.)Must be in the help and organization.

Dell Deals pricing are actually very much competitive with competitors in retail and especially online if you browse through the site in more details. I think Dell customer service has improved over the years and they are trying to offer more services. All systems come with 1 year warranty and the upsell for more is cheaper than other brands too. Selling systems through Walmart, Staples and Best Buy is a good move for Dell. They already made top 25 retail channel selling list the first week they were on the market. Dell is going through a growing pains phase but I am sure their stock will climb up in a year.

I have bought a lot of Dells over the years but now I am buying HP's.  Dells' off shore technical and business support is terrible.  All they want is to sell you something else and you can hardly understand them.  They have never been able to help me.  They are a waste of time.

I bought a Dell online but never will buy another.  A card failed and I had to buy another only to find out that it was combined with the DVD card.  Had to buy 2 cards to fix 1.  Their support has been simply bad.  After waiting endlessly on the telephone they told me the error wasn't covered by warranty because I had changed the Windows operating system.  When I asked how is that possible since I know nothing about it, much less how to modify it, they replied they couldn't say but it was changed and thus not covered.
