Netflix lifts limits on streaming movies

Netflix does most of its business by mail, but the company is getting ready for the future by spending $40 million on a video streaming service for customers with high-speed Internet connections. Today, the company is lifting restrictions on that service so that customers can watch as many movies and television shows as they want from Netflix's library of 6,000 titles.

Netflix previously set time limits on how much customers could watch per month, presumably to save money on bandwidth and the fees it must pay Hollywood when a movie is streamed. Today's move could be costly, because the company isn't raising its monthly rates to compensate for the added expenses.

Why the sudden burst of generosity? We probably have Apple to thank. If the rumors are true, Apple is set to announce movie rentals over iTunes tomorrow at its Macworld Expo. Apple hasn't been much of a competitor to Netflix before, but with a movie rental service the company becomes a threat.

Netflix's unlimited streaming could take off later this year when the company debuts a set-top box by LG Electronics that will stream movies to TVs.

Not everyone can use the unlimited streaming feature. Customers on Netflix's $4.99-a-month plan aren't invited. Mac users are out of luck as well, because the service only works with Windows.

So is the streaming library any good? At the top of Netflix's Top 50 streamed list are full seasons of "Heroes," "The Office" and "30 Rock." Films on that list include "Pan's Labyrinth," "The Italian Job" and a bunch of movies I've never heard of.

Has anyone streamed Netflix movies to their PC? How did you like it? Share your experiences in the comments.

The streaming video feature in Netflix is actually pretty cool, I enjoy it immensely.  Keep in mind however that I am part of a very small group of people that don't actually own a television.  I use my PC to watch DVD's so when I'm in the mood and don't want to head out to the video store I just quickly download a movie and I'm off to the races.  The main drawback with their site is that there are no "current" movies in stock.  They're mostly all movies that have been out for quite some time.  Luckily for me I am an avid fan of old movies so I enjoy the experience.

It works like a charm!!

THE FUTURE IS INTERNET VIDEO STREAMING!

Yes.  I bought their one DVD plan ($9.44/month) and it's been a good service.  I usually watch something online while I wait for the next one in the mail.  The streaming selection is limited, but it's growing.

It's garbage.  Until they offer their full selection of movies, it's a waste of time.

I've stream movies to my PC. It works great and the quality is good. It is handy especially when traveling and you want to watch a movie without paying the cost of the hotel pay per view. If they come up with a device that will stream the movies to your TV and it is unlimited I will be a customer for life.

They do not offer a very good variety of movies.  What they do have works well though.  Not enough selection to keep us as customers.

I found the movie selection to be very poor, but the few movies I have seen were easy to view and I did not have any issues with the technology.  If the selection were bigger I would use this service over the mail-in alternative.

I use streaming videos all the time and love it!  I just wish there was more of a selection

I have watched a ton of movies on Netflix streaming, movies I wouldn't have normally watched.  Being a sci-fi and horror buff, I don't feel like having a B-movie sent to the house so I enjoy the service Netflix provides over the computer.  Now that it's unlimited, I'm sure I'll be watching a lot more of them.  Thanks Netflix!

/well the movie selection is ltd and no comf to see the movie from the computer chair and from the sofa the 17inch monitor is too smal. When most people have the flat screens that can be used for dowload movies it may be more parctical''
