Netflix lifts limits on streaming movies

Netflix does most of its business by mail, but the company is getting ready for the future by spending $40 million on a video streaming service for customers with high-speed Internet connections. Today, the company is lifting restrictions on that service so that customers can watch as many movies and television shows as they want from Netflix's library of 6,000 titles.

Netflix previously set time limits on how much customers could watch per month, presumably to save money on bandwidth and the fees it must pay Hollywood when a movie is streamed. Today's move could be costly, because the company isn't raising its monthly rates to compensate for the added expenses.

Why the sudden burst of generosity? We probably have Apple to thank. If the rumors are true, Apple is set to announce movie rentals over iTunes tomorrow at its Macworld Expo. Apple hasn't been much of a competitor to Netflix before, but with a movie rental service the company becomes a threat.

Netflix's unlimited streaming could take off later this year when the company debuts a set-top box by LG Electronics that will stream movies to TVs.

Not everyone can use the unlimited streaming feature. Customers on Netflix's $4.99-a-month plan aren't invited. Mac users are out of luck as well, because the service only works with Windows.

So is the streaming library any good? At the top of Netflix's Top 50 streamed list are full seasons of "Heroes," "The Office" and "30 Rock." Films on that list include "Pan's Labyrinth," "The Italian Job" and a bunch of movies I've never heard of.

Has anyone streamed Netflix movies to their PC? How did you like it? Share your experiences in the comments.

I've used Netflix to stream both movies and Heroes over a FIOS connection.  I like the convenience and choices.  Plus Netflix crossreferences your upcoming choices to let you know if a film you have in your queue is available in a streaming version.

Very cool.

I love the video streaming - never had a problem with it either.  This is a dream come true for those of us who like watching movies based on our mood.

My husband has streamed Netflix movies and seems to be happy with it.  Even though we have 3 TV's capable of playing movies, he likes being able to access it online rather than always waiting for a movie to arrive in the mail.  I don't think I prefer yet to watch a movie on my computer screen in my computer chair (my greatest complaint!) but I can see where Netflix is encouraging this with unlimited streaming.  I'll definitely consider it now.

I use the streamed Netflix movies function to watch anime, on my computer at home. I find it a great way to relax. The quality of the video feed is not the best, but a majority of the videos are far superior to the quality you get on youtube. My plans currently allows me 9 hours a month, and i usually run out of time after about 2 week. If the plan changes to unlimited, and the libary gets updated, I think I may just throw away my BlockBuster Vides Card.

it's sucks that doesn't work with Mac what should I do? just buy a Pc to watch movies,.... heck no

I have only watched a few tv shows (Heroes) but my 6 year old loves being able to pick out an watch his own movie at the computer. When I travel for business it is great for watchning movies at the hotel room. I probably won't use it much at home until I have a PC which can play back on my television.

I have used the Watch Now feature that Netflix offers to its customers.I do enjoy the ability to watch shows or movies at any time I choose.I would recommend Netflix to everyone.

I have streamed several movies from Netflix. While the audio and video quality are rather good, most popular movie titles were not listed in the streaming library.

i am a new netflix customer of one month and i have used netflix to watch tv on my laptop and i love it.  i enjoy it because being an anglophile i am able to watch many british tv shows that i have never even heard of and they are very good. i also think for netflix its a better deal for them to let me watch it on computor than having to mail it back and forth to me. i am cutting my cable service to basic and will be using netflix much more.

We've only watched 2 movies via the streaming, but it worked out great! My daughter watched a kids movie, she was 10 at the time, while my husband and I watched (on DVD) something for the grown-ups! The picture and sound were good, no problems at all! And she thought it was exciting to watch a movie on the computer!
