Netflix lifts limits on streaming movies

Netflix does most of its business by mail, but the company is getting ready for the future by spending $40 million on a video streaming service for customers with high-speed Internet connections. Today, the company is lifting restrictions on that service so that customers can watch as many movies and television shows as they want from Netflix's library of 6,000 titles.

Netflix previously set time limits on how much customers could watch per month, presumably to save money on bandwidth and the fees it must pay Hollywood when a movie is streamed. Today's move could be costly, because the company isn't raising its monthly rates to compensate for the added expenses.

Why the sudden burst of generosity? We probably have Apple to thank. If the rumors are true, Apple is set to announce movie rentals over iTunes tomorrow at its Macworld Expo. Apple hasn't been much of a competitor to Netflix before, but with a movie rental service the company becomes a threat.

Netflix's unlimited streaming could take off later this year when the company debuts a set-top box by LG Electronics that will stream movies to TVs.

Not everyone can use the unlimited streaming feature. Customers on Netflix's $4.99-a-month plan aren't invited. Mac users are out of luck as well, because the service only works with Windows.

So is the streaming library any good? At the top of Netflix's Top 50 streamed list are full seasons of "Heroes," "The Office" and "30 Rock." Films on that list include "Pan's Labyrinth," "The Italian Job" and a bunch of movies I've never heard of.

Yes, we watched Blame it on Fidel the other night on my husband's laptop from Netflix's "watch it now" selection.  We were surprised at the great quality of the streaming via a wireless router (no problems whatsoever).

No complaints, though the selection of "watch it now" movies is not great.  That said, we both liked Blame it on Fidel.

One concern, however: we have Comcast as our ISP. And there has been news lately of people having their service cut off by Comcast for downloading too much.  And Comcast won't say exactly how much is too much.  So after watching the film, we worried a little that to do it too often could get us in trouble with Comcast.  So Comcast customers probably ought to think twice about watching too many films online until Comcast clarifies its policies.

I tried to stream to my laptop once, but the connection kept breaking and it wouldn't work. =\ I stick to just getting the DVD's in the mail now.

I love the ability to stream movies from Netflix onto my PC... rarely do I use this feature at home, but work productivity has been drastically decreased.

It's a great Idea. But the title's suck!!!!!!!!!

I viewed The Untouchables when the streaming video feature was unveiled (why is this title is no longer avalable?).  The feature was very userfriendly and the quality was very good. I didn't experience lag time, reloading, pausing, etc., like you usually get with online streams.  My husband and I were very happy to have this option but the lack of available titles and limited viewing time dissuaded us from using it again.  It's good to know they're offering more tv shows and the limit has been lifted...I might just check it out again.  GO NETFLIX!

Netflix player does not work properly. The movies always stop and are hard to get restarted. Then if you can't watch it, they claim you have seen the whole movie and use the time.

We have streamed several movies from Netflix. The library is actually  pretty good. I was a little disappointed that some movies like Hunt for Red October and

The Shawshank Redemption were not available to watch instantly but hopefully that will change.

I love this feature from Netflix and I'm very glad they decided to do this!!!

I have watched some shows the picture and sound quality are good. The selection is limited.

I just recently starting watching the stream.. There are various titles but much of them are older films. It's worth a membership alone to the streaming videos if the selection were larger.
