Wal-Mart kills video download service

Wal-Mart has canceled its online video download service, blaming HP for discontinuing the technology behind it. What a lame excuse. If the Wal-Mart video store was doing well, do you think HP would yank the engine powering it?

The reality is that few people used it. Those who did were not impressed. On paper, the service sounded great. All the major movie studios participated. New releases cost up to $20, and older films sold for as much as $10. TV shows were available the day after they aired for $2. Wal-Mart claimed it would only take 45 minutes to download a "near-DVD" video using a high-speed connection.

So why didn't it work? According to HP, the market for paid video downloads didn't perform as well as it had expected. I think Wal-Mart is having a tough time figuring out its online strategy. Does anyone remember "The Hub," the retailer's attempt at social networking? Shut down after 10 weeks, the site was supposed to be a place where teens could upload photos and videos and talk about Wal-Mart products.

Give the company kudos for at least trying to experiment. But Wal-Mart's brick-and-mortar brand simply overpowers its online identity. I think of Wal-Mart's site as the place to buy the same inexpensive items its stores sell. You go in, find what you need and get out -- just like you would in an actual Wal-Mart. It's not a place to linger, download videos or chat with your friends.

As I look at the site today, I see that Wal-Mart is promoting price rollbacks, low-calorie water and products to help you quit smoking. That's the kind of stuff people visit the site for -- not near-DVD video downloading.

Walmart isn't the cause of problems but neither is it some great community supporter. PLease people stop drinking the cool-aid. They are in business to maximize profits. They don't keep prices low to help ANYONE. Its a high volume low margiln business.  And btw...Target is cleaning their clock charging slightlly higher prices but offering a way better shopping experience and atmosphere.

I have been a Wal-Mart associate for over 15 years .....Do Not Believe the negative criticism........I KNOW my benefits are better than yours!  The employees who have problems, would have them anyplace they worked....BELIEVE ME!  My position with the company is very much in demand throughout the country.  I could work ANYPLACE!  Wal-Mart did not choose me, I chose Wal-Mart.

quit bashing walmart!! i remember the days of "mom&pop" stores in america! you had to be born in, go to school, church,or whatever fraternal existed in town just to be employed!! walmarts maynot be perfect, but name any other company so important to rural & sububurn economy, you can't!thank you

My Walmart in Dyersburg Tn.quit selling fabric,I am really upset about it.A lot of people in this area sew and quilt. There is nowhere else close by to buy fabric at reasonable prices.

You people are so stupid!  Wal-mart sells tobacco in it's stores, and according to CDC statistics tobacco products kill 600,000 people per year worldwide, hey Bush, bomb Phillip Morris not some poor SOB that wears a diaper on his head and shits in his toga.

I'm so sick of everyone complaining about Wal-Mart. No one is forcing you to shop there. My community fought against having a Wal-Mart built here because they stated "It would ruin the ambiance of a small town." We now have 3 Wal-Marts all within 20 miles of each other. And you know what? I still can't find a damn parking spot. It seems like everyone who fought against it are the ones taking the close parking spots. The ones who happen to work for Wal-Mart are lucky to even have a job in this day and time. My father has worked for Wal-Mart for almost 13 years now, driving the Semi's, making deliveries to the stores. Sure we've had to make sacrifices with him being on the road most of the time, but we're a really close family because of it. He has great health insurance and my parents will definitely be set for their retirement. We also get a 10% discount at the stores. All Wal-Mart employees do. Nowadays, every penny counts. I don't know how much I have saved by shopping at Wal-Mart. Plus, they take anything back. Also, if you want to buy in bulk and save more money, pay $40 a year and shop at Sam's Club. All you need is the membership and you can save loads. I used to work there myself and it was great for small businesses and large families. Even their gas is about 5 cents cheaper than any other gas station. Everyone needs to realize that our economy has gone downhill every since a certain person was given power over our nation. Try to remember about 7 years ago and how much better everything seemed to be. We were in a surplus. Now everything seems to be falling apart and our nation is crumbling. Hopefully there are enough smart people left in this country who can make the RIGHT decision this time. Us savers will keep on shopping at Wal-Mart and everyone else will just keep on bitching about how much Wal-Mart has helped so many others.

Greg, you are such a liar. I am a store manager for Wal Mart and have been with the company 16 years. NEVER..not one time..EVER has ANY level of corporate EVER EVER said to FIRE someone because they were about to BONUS! We are PROUD when our associates EARN their bonus based on their hard work and we WANT them to have their bonus.  You need to get your facts straight. People who bash Wal Mart should shop somewhere else. I was an HOURLY associate for 8.5 years BEFORE I went in to management and the company treated me very good. It has been good to me, has worked around my college schedule, helped me advance and if you will notice, all the negative emails are coming from people who don't work for Wal Mart and have no idea of the truth. They wouldn't know it if it hit them in the face. What we do for our country, our communities, and our world, we do because it's the right thing to do. It's what SAM would do. His words were to help people Save Money so they could LIVE BETTER.  I will continue to work for, and work proudly for this company, because I make the difference. I run MY Wal-Mart, and I serve the citizens in my community. I establish the relationships with the customers to make our store the most friendly place in town. And I do it because I care. And I give back in to my community of my own time as a volunteer..PROUDLY as a WAL MART representative and I display the honor and integrity that SAM wanted us to show. So you all have the right to say what you want to say, to deface the company with your non factual information.  In the end, we know where we stand, we know what we do. I know what I do, and what I do is the right thing. I make the world a better place by making a great place to work for my associates, who I will vigorously defend.

wal-mart continues to be the price leader in the industry. i as a thrifty consumer and mother of 3 appreciate all the company has to offer the average american family......go wal-mart.......
