Dude, did Dell finally score?

Was bringing Dell back to Dell the right answer after all?

It's been a rough few years for Dell, as competitors like HP and Apple have been chomping away at its market position and its stock is 40% off the highs it hit back late 2004. It got bad enough that early this year Michael Dell stepped back in as CEO after stepping down in 2004.

Based on the stock price at least, it'd be hard to call 2007 an extraordinary success as the stock is roughly flat for the year. Dell (Michael that is) has been active, though, and is bringing some interesting changes to the company. In the Spring the company announced that it would start selling computers at Wal-Mart, and since then it has announced that it will be entering other retailers, including Best Buy.

But what really caught my eye was a write-up by Walter Mossberg in today's Wall Street Journal (subscription required). Dell's computers have been known as a lot of things: efficient, cost effective, timely. Mossberg's description of the new Dell XPS One desktop as "an elegant, handsome, cleverly designed one-piece computer," however, is not a portrait typically associated with a Dell computer.

So it looks like Dell could be righting the ship, but will this be reflected in Dell's stock any time soon? The stock carries an unimpressive two star rating on CAPS and has more than its share of critics. Some of CAPS top players can be found among the Dell bulls, though. Carstenjansing likes the Michael Dell angle and said that the "founder [is] at the helm again, turning things around." SandyRN, who's been a Dell bull for even longer, said that Dell has a "good business model" and thinks that the stock is undervalued to boot.

So what do you think? Head over to CAPS and chime in.

(Full disclosure: I do not have a financial position in any of the companies mentioned.)

Dells customer service as well as their financial service sucks! They say no interest for so many months and then your statements reflect differently--if you pay ahead of time or even more than minimum due---you still get charges late fees as well as you never see balance go sown due to their very high interest rates--hell---at this rate--I could have purchased a new car!!

I don't mind that technical help is offshore.  I've met plenty of people from India and elsewhere who are very intelligent.  The problem with tech support today is that the support people are not trained in technical analysis, they are trained to look up information in a knowledge base and spout it back to us.  When I call tech support it is because I need someone who knows more about the problem than the knowledge base does.  I can search the knowledge base myself, thank you.

Dell computers are as good or better than most all that are out there. What the company needs to do as a whole is get back to where they used to be in marketing and customer sevice and support. Dell was always on the cutting edge in everything they did...it's time to get back to where they were...they have the experience, they definitely can right the ship!

I have never owned any computer but a Dell until this month.  I just simply cannot go through another computer with customer service that is capable, overpolite but not understandable.

Dell Neeeds to change it's customer service. before you call you need to learn to speak indian, then it might not take 2 hours on the phone

I just purchased my second Dell computer however after finally getting the order straight on the phone and being transferred about 20 times, everything is fine now.

It was just hard in the beginning because of the employees that work there do not speak very good english but I really like their product so hopefully I will not need assistance.

yah dell is good up front but customer service behind the scenes is terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!! They go by the slogan " IF YOU CANT ANSWER >>> TRANSFER" good luck getting someone who knows what they are talking about.....worst experience I ever had was speaking to someone from another country.....

I will never by another Dell computer..Over priced garbage! If it breaks fork out the money and get it fixed locally. Bells and Whistles don't sell computers, keeping it up and running does!

Dell is like your favorite cowboy hero..once in a while they get hurt but they seem to recover fast and all is well again.  Have used Dell for a long time and have no other.

Ordered a Dell online Dec 19, their promotion said next business day shipping it shipped on the 22nd I still do not have it DHL express said Dell shipped it ground.I have several Dell Computers but will not order another one.
