Dude, did Dell finally score?

Was bringing Dell back to Dell the right answer after all?

It's been a rough few years for Dell, as competitors like HP and Apple have been chomping away at its market position and its stock is 40% off the highs it hit back late 2004. It got bad enough that early this year Michael Dell stepped back in as CEO after stepping down in 2004.

Based on the stock price at least, it'd be hard to call 2007 an extraordinary success as the stock is roughly flat for the year. Dell (Michael that is) has been active, though, and is bringing some interesting changes to the company. In the Spring the company announced that it would start selling computers at Wal-Mart, and since then it has announced that it will be entering other retailers, including Best Buy.

But what really caught my eye was a write-up by Walter Mossberg in today's Wall Street Journal (subscription required). Dell's computers have been known as a lot of things: efficient, cost effective, timely. Mossberg's description of the new Dell XPS One desktop as "an elegant, handsome, cleverly designed one-piece computer," however, is not a portrait typically associated with a Dell computer.

So it looks like Dell could be righting the ship, but will this be reflected in Dell's stock any time soon? The stock carries an unimpressive two star rating on CAPS and has more than its share of critics. Some of CAPS top players can be found among the Dell bulls, though. Carstenjansing likes the Michael Dell angle and said that the "founder [is] at the helm again, turning things around." SandyRN, who's been a Dell bull for even longer, said that Dell has a "good business model" and thinks that the stock is undervalued to boot.

So what do you think? Head over to CAPS and chime in.

(Full disclosure: I do not have a financial position in any of the companies mentioned.)

Oh boy where do i begin, i have the Dell XPS 410 version and have had nothing but trouble from day one. It first started with the salesman by telling us things we could do and have that were completely false, we were convinced(by salesman) to get the new wonderful Vista software and it completely messed up our computer. I spent hours and hours on the phone and chat sessions with Dell Customer Service to fix the issues and never got fixed or had to call back numerous times and had to start over with explanation of what was going on and each of them had a different way to fix issue because they did not see what was previously done. I have enough case #'s to write a book with and then when i finally got to speak with someone that understood me or i could them then my computer was messed up so bad that i've had to do a PC Restore like 5 times and then found out that Vista had messed up my "Motherboard" and "Modem" so those had to be replaced. So now, i have a software program that i can't use because it will not do what we were told it would do and Dell will not fix the issue because the overseas people do not understand me and the ones that do say it is an issue with the salesman that is no longer there, now i have had to remove the Vista software and then do another restore to factory settings and have lost numerous amounts of info that i can never recover and still have issues with the XPS 410 but will not call anymore about cause no one knows what they are doing and the warranty is almost over so they are expecting me to pay for any further issues that were caused by there Customer Service, I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER DELL OR RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fortunately, my customer service experience with Dell has been a great one. Their tech helped me reformat my XP system without dealing with unintelligible people/directions, etc. Though my system is still quite functionable, I would like to continue using Dell's products...very soon. My personal advice on customer service...stick to what's  right for all your customers. We are the ones who provide all those dollars to keep your company up and running.

2 Years ago purchased a Dell and it kept locking up Called Dell tech support where this individual was from I don't know> I couldn't understand him I asked him to slow down I had a hard time understanding him. He walked me through recovery state from a disk. Little did I know it wiped everything out.He didn't warn me.

I lost over 10 years of family tree information I had. Thanks Dell for my lost of hard work.Like you care.He didn't. I live in America not Indonesia or wherever I was talking to.Ask the customer that is computer iliterate if they backed up their information first before wiping them out.But then again how is an American supposed to understand a foreign language. Is this Dell's way of covering up for themselves

I purchased a new Dell laptop to replace an old Dell laptop.  The first one came and within 1 hour and numerous calls to tech support it was decided that it was defective.  The warranty replacement computer arrived and it was worse than the first one.  I took it to a computer tech for diagnosis and found out that it had at least 6 things wrong with it and the biggest being the motherboard.  I have been on hold with Dell tech support for an hour now and the best that they are willing to do it to replace it like for like and give me an upgrade to overnight shipping.  The first computer order was placed on 12/6 and it is now 12/28 and I still don't have a new good Dell computer.  What kind of support is this?  I have bee told that if I want a different computer I will have to call back and talk to the sales department and see what kind of deal they are willing to give me, which means another 1-2 hour telephone call to Dell after spending at least 8 hours trying to fix all of the other messes.  So, in short I wouldn't ever recommend Dell to anyone that is looking for a dependable computer with good customer and tech support.  If you want to throw money away, Dell is the way to go.

until Dell get tech help who speak English, I will never buy from them

i would never buy a Dell Computer they had a Zero percent finance . I did my newphew a favor and theystarted to charge interest . i called Dell they said its not them its the finacing company . i ended up paying all the bill and swearing not to buy a dell again

DELL is still pure junk it has no foundation its buiilt with the cheapest componments by  the cheapest labor and serviced by the most ignorant tech. Its glory days are over till its quality comes back to the level it was yrs ago

Dell sucks. Build your own... Way more cost-effective.

It's all about customer service, customer service, and customer service.

Until Dell gets the message, nothing will change from this company.

I agree with most here that Dell tech support is the pits, but they do offer an option to pay more and get better support (for whatever thats worth).  I recently purchased an Alienware PC which is another PC from a Dell company, their support is even WORSE than Dell.

As far as building all in one PC's, good for them.  I've been spending too much time messing around with PC's 'under the hood' and I've recently changed my attitude with the prrice of most PC's that I'll just donate and buy a new one every 2 years or so and save the headache.
