Dude, you're getting a dud

Remember when it was cool to own/buy a Dell computer? Not that long ago it was Dell, not Apple, that had the laid back young kid starring in commercials that resonated with consumers.  "Dude, it's a Dell,"  was the stuff of genius. Dell's were cool, they were cheap and they were everywhere.

Yet in little less than five years Dell has gone from cool to ice cold. Its share of the PC market has eroded due to misguided retail practices, poor customer service and outdated design. The company has also lost its price advantage. Despite the cheap prices you see on the company's web site, or in the flyers that arrive in the mail, once you configure the computer to match even the most basic of needs, the price ends up being as high or higher as PCs from Toshiba, Hewlett Packard and Acer.

Quite simply there's nothing that sets the company apart anymore -- at least nothing positive.  Its abysmal technical service group certainly set it apart, as waiting on the Dell help desk was an exercise bordering on cruelty. To its credit, Dell's management team has begun to address this issue by adding staff, but once you get a bad reputation it can be very hard to change consumer perceptions.  Dell has a lot of making up to do and some blunt talk from its back-in-the-saddle CEO, Michael Dell, just might help remake its image. Let's face it, Apple was left for dead a few years back and look at what the return of Steve Jobs did for that company.

But if Michael Dell is to resurrect his company, it's going to take more than new sales channels. Deciding to make its computers available in retail chains such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy can't hurt its sales effort to consumers, but the fact is that if Dell wants to get margins and earnings headed back in the right direction its going to need to think outside the (CPU) box.  If Dell really wants to increase its share of the consumer market, it needs a broader product line.  Notebook and desktop computers alone won't cut it -- especially with a younger generation that increasingly turns to smart phones or other handheld devices, such as iPods or gaming consoles, to communicate with friends, play video games, listen to music and surf the net.  A recent survey showed that PC sales actually declined in Japan last year.  The first such decline in a major market since the PC exploded on the scene over 20 years ago.

In other words, the challenge confronting Dell is huge. Not only does the company need to remake its image in order to win back customers, but it needs to rethink its entire business in order to face the realities of a new age. That's a tall order even for a gritty Texan like Michael Dell. Frankly, until the company provides evidence that it understands the scope of its challenge and starts to deliver consistently stronger sales and earnings growth, this once cool company and its stock will remain a dud.

I'm disgusted with dell and too love seeing them falter.  Customer service/technical support was horrible. I could never get anyone to help me with the problems I had with my computer. I wouldn't have any dell if someone gave it to me.

I bought a Dell because they have a plant in my city and I wanted to support the company. I have been happy with the computer but technical support has been a nightmare. I spent an hour with them because of printer problems and was advised to buy a new printer. I then did so. The new printer wouldn't work either. I spent 3 hours on the phone with tech support, completely rebooted my computer and finally just said forget it and hung up. One call to a 20 year tech savy friend led to my buying a new USB cord which fixed the problem. Now I have two working printers. I wish Dell success because I don't want to see anyone lose their jobs but tech support must improve.

Dell has problems like every other U.S. company that outsources technical support to other countries to save money. English is the primary language of this country and if you can not understand the person on the other end of the phone it is Dells fault not yours. On the business side Dell makes the best configured workstations and servers. They offer Gold support and the best prices for the product received.

I hope Dell successfully restructures its business and regains its position as the #1 supplier of computers. I do not think Walmart is the answer, I think technical support related to the language of the customer, consolidated product lines geared to the needs of the consumer, better web site organization and configuration is a start in the right direction .

Dude, Dell sucks!!!  I own a Dell, and I have tried and tried to get customer service to help me with the some of the most basic problems known to man, like speaking english!! They are not knowledgeable in any way about troubleshooting either.  As for the CPU itself, they use components that are 2 months from being obsolete, load in a ton of programs that are mostly trial offers, and are not very cheap anymore. For the same price you spend on a Dell XPS series, you can get an Alienware or FalconNorthwest PC and it is 5x better than whatever Dells tries to sell as "The next generation in gaming".

My girlfriend bought a dell once.  It will be the last one I promise.  I wouldn't give that computer to my worst enemy.  I would rather have a root canal, than have to go though dell customer service again.  That was a lot of time wasted in my life that I will never get back

Its about time for this over rated company to faulter!!Thier customer service stinks and you can't understand them and thier process stinks over all.i have always said this and use to be a dell rep and broke away after my first customer service issue.two months to get a new laptop replaced, insane!!there are far better pc's on the market and thier sales gimmick on the cheaper pc has wore off.go with a custom pc,one you can design as its cheaper and better in the long run.3 year warranties, etc.dell offers 90 days,so that tells you about thier product.good luck dell on going down the toilet!!

We bought our dell in oct 06 we never got our $150 rebate. They refuse to help or answer emails but still continue to email us w/offers to buy another Yea right!!!

I was going to buy a Dell notebook, but thanks to this article, I'll buy an HP.

Liger sounds like the kid that keys your Corvette, because he can't have one he trashes everyone else’s. Dell may fail and they may succeed. If they fail, think of all the Employees with out jobs. Think of the companies they purchase Chips, Ram and other parts from that will loose. America will be better off in the long run with the success of Dell, IBM, Gateway, HP and others.

Dell technical support has tripled in quality in the last 1.5 years. Having more than 4 locations in the U.S and not overseas has turned around thousands of customers daily. Spend the money on the better warranty and premium support and you will be a happy customer. Try and save every penny and get the cheapest system and you WILL get the cheap support. You get what you pay for in technology and  poeple dont understand that.
