Post office seeing red over Netflix envelopes

Image Credit: Flyawaycafe.comThose red DVD mailers Netflix uses are a huge pain in the butt for postal workers. In a report out this week, the Postal Service says it has to manually process 70% of Netflix's DVD envelopes because they jam up the mail machines.

And here's government bureaucracy at its finest. Normally the Postal Service would charge Netflix for having a "nonmachineable" mailpiece. But this kind of envelope isn't discussed in the official "Mail Manual," so the Postal Service can't classify it as nonmachineable.

So the Postal Service has had to suck it up and hand-process Netflix envelopes. That's added $41.9 million in labor costs over the past two years and will add $61.5 million over the next two, the service estimates.

No more. The Postal Service's Inspector General wants Netflix to make its envelopes easier to process or pay a 17-cent surcharge for each one. Netflix says it will redesign its mailer to avoid the fee. A spokesman spins the issue to note that the company actually saves the post office money by going to the post office to get returned discs. Netflix is entitled to have the discs delivered because it pays for first-class postage.

Netflix mails 1.6 million DVDs a day.

Citi analysts said that if Netflix has to pay the surcharge, monthly operating income per subscriber would fall by two-thirds, from $1.05 to 35 cents. Citi reiterated its "sell" rating on Netflix.

Investors shrugged off the mini-drama yesterday. Netflix shares rose 18 cents to close at $23.93.

Well this explains why whenever I get anything from Netflix the envelopes get jammed into my box. Trying to get them out is a real pain usually one or more of them get ripped in the process. I've contacted Netflix to send spare envelopes but got no responce and the polite note I left for the postman to leave them by door or at least be more careful has met with no responce.

Blockbuster uses the same mailer.  Why is it that only Netflix is mentioned?  Give 'em a break, they bring in lots of $$$ if they're mailing 1.6 million pieces of mail daily!!

they are looking at the labor costs but how much income was created by net flix??  i bet more than the labor and they are crying about decrease in income because of the internet.  this is giveing some of it back.

We tried Netflix TWICE. We got maybe two, yes that's right, two movies a month-if we were lucky. Netflix claimed it was the post office's fault and not theirs-of course. Some movies were returned that Netflix claimed they never received back and vice-versa. It was just too big of a pain to deal with, so we cancelled for the second time. It was amusing that Netflix NEVER took any responsibility for the delays in receiving movies, not getting them at all, or not receiving them back in their terminal. Pay for View movies are the best bet-and cheaper than Netflix.

I hope this isn't why 9 out of 10 postal employees you meet are grouchy and not very friendly...lol

It is true that the Netflix envelopes are not processed by machine, but it is the same with other videos.  You notice that the Post Office does not complain too much about the business that Netflix provides.  Having worked at the P.O. and having hand sorted Netflix and other envelopes manually, I wouldn't think it is such a big deal.

The postal service has substandard service anyway.  I have been a Netflix customer for years and enjoy their service.  I would fire the postal service if I could, but do I have a choice?

Gee, yoiu mean that the Post Office finally has to work for a change.......

The postal service is out of control!!! Costs keep going up and service keeps going down. It's time for them to cut spending, and stop crying! They made the rules.

How about adding cost to junk mail??  It would save paper (trees) free up land fills, reduce work for their employies, save unnecessary delivery stops (gas).

In other news: Blockbuster Movie store CEO seen lunching with the Postal Service Inspector General...  Coincidence...You be the judge
