Goldman Sachs hit Sirius and XM Satellite with serious downgrades today.  It knocked down shares of both companies by 5%.

What analysts don't want to say is that the future of satellite radio in the U.S. could already be coming to an end.  A merger between the two companies may be the only alternative they have to stay in business.  Each company has well over a billion dollars in debt.  Sirius had negative operating income last quarter of $106 million on $242 million in revenue.  XM was in the red to the tune of $108 million on sales of $278 million.  And XM shows only $275 million in cash on its balance sheet.

Sirius had 7.7 million subscribers at the end of last quarter and XM had 8.6 million, but those numbers no longer double year-over-year.  That may be because other forms of entertainment have taken over in the car.  When satellite radio was launched a decade ago the rear-seat entertainment device was not all the rage.  The Apple iPod did not exist.

The market seems to forget that the shares of these two companies trade as if they were going out of business.  In early 2000, Sirius traded close to $70.  It is now lucky to see $3.50 on a good day.

Sirius and XM are lobbying the FCC to approve their merger on the basis that there is plenty of new digital competition and that a combined company would not be a monopoly.  In the strictest sense, it is one, of course.  The government licenses the rights to be in the business and, in a merger, there would be only one company with those rights.

But, the FCC may have a more practical reason to give a merger the green light. With limited cash on their balance sheet, tight credit markets, slowing subcriber growth, and huge quarterly losses, both companies could disappear.

i love my sirius!  it's nice not to lose signal when you drive everywhere. hopefully they let them merge but it is the FCC we're talking about! jason ellis is the future on sirius radio faction 28

Howard has no need to be worried about anything...he'd get another $500MM deal in less than a month, radio has been begging him since he made the switch.

TCH completely agree. Top five reasons to get rid of Sirius for me was:

1) Stern network - non-stop hyping and hidden advertising

2) Advertising throughout the other programming

3) Lack of regional/local programming

4) Unauthorized charges

5) Stern show content - Local programming gets far better/interesting guests making their rounds/promoting, Stern ego overshadowing other talent, just not fresh anymore

I've had XM for about 4 years and just love it. I hope they survive.

Hey Moron Happy Sirius Subscriber!!! I think you should check your facts before posting anything. You are nothing but a Shi*head. Period. If you had done your homework you would see that it did, in fact, get close to $70.00 per share. To be exact - It hit a high of $69.44 in intraday trading in March of 2000.  Go crawl back in your hole dumbass!!!

Sirus and XM have failed to push the advertising marketability. sirus has overburdened it's bottom line with a 500ml package to Stern(whom I love), the latest electronic devices has halted the growth and the traditional radio industry is threatened by the wide variety and choice aspect that satellite has to offer. I say make the merge happen and leave room for Govt. tweeking should it become a monopoly in the future. There is always room for another satellite company when there is success, no one in their right mind would ever attempt to do this again if these two companies fail as a individuals. Give them a break, they deserve it.

I drive tractor-trailer for a living.  My XM radio is the BEST investment I have ever made in the 25+ years on the road.  I can't imagine my life on the road without my music, talk, entainment, and how-to shows.  Someone PLEASE pay attention and do NOT let these entities end up by the wayside.

I watch with bated breath to see the out come here.

SAVE HOWARD STERN!!!!!!

Ive had problems with both companies. There worse then cell phone companies as far as contracts.

i have had xm radio for almost 4 years now. in my opinion it is the greatest thing to happen to music listening. a personal digital device cannot begin to compare or compete with the hundreds of listening choices available on xm. the signal clarity is fantastic. with commercial free music stations, it should be commercial radio stations that we should be saying goodbye to. the only reason i could see choosing an ipod over something like satelite radio would be that humans want to seperate themselves even further from one another and interact  less while in public.  thats too bad when we cannot get away from the fact that we do all live on the same planet. i plan to keep my subscription as long as they continue to broadcast. right now in addition to their regular line up of nearly every musical genre known to man, there are at least 5 or 6 stations dedicated entirely to holiday music that has been organized once again according  to genre i.e. classical, pop, hanukah,  even twisted ( happily called "specail x").  at only $9 a month i dont see why you would not want this product and still keep your whatever. peace
