Nintendo shortage Wii-lly hurts company

I was shopping at a Best Buy in San Jose yesterday and here's what I found:

Stacks of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. When I asked where the Wiis were, a saleswoman gave a small snort and shook her head. The store was out.

It's a common scenario across the country, and in other parts of the world. A year after its release, the console that many expected would be in third place has become a hit of such proportions that people still line up overnight to buy one. I've had a Wii since its launch, and spent a good chunk of the weekend playing "Super Mario Galaxy." This console definitely holds up over time. [readmore]

Wii mania is in full swing right now, with the system selling for $400 or $500 on eBay. And while it's great to be making the must-have gift this year, Nintendo execs are rightfully bemoaning the missed opportunities the shortage is creating.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently said the high demand is keeping the company from its goal of selling the Wii to non-traditional gamers, such as women and 40- and 50-year olds who aren't video game fans.

"They aren't going to sleep outside of a store overnight or visit a retailer five or six times," he said. "It is literally a missed opportunity."

Fils-Aime was more critical in another interview: "A shortage benefits no one," he said. "We're disappointed. This was all about how we didn't accurately estimate demand. We need to be more bullish about the potential for the Wii."

So there it is. Nintendo didn't have enough faith in its own system, and is paying the price this holiday. The company is cranking out 1.8 million consoles per month and says it simply can't produce any faster. CEO Satoru Iwata has said that one bottleneck after another keeps popping up on the production line, and that slows everything down.

It's a huge misstep, with Microsoft and Sony happy to provide an alternative for frustrated parents who can't find a Wii. Sony CEO Howard Stringer is practically gloating these days. "It's a little fortuitous that the Wii is running out of hardware," he said recently.

If Nintendo is helping competitors sell consoles, something is seriously out of whack. Fils-Aime is right to be disappointed. The Wii is on a lot of Christmas lists, but this is not a holiday Nintendo should be proud of.

I don't buy it.  I belive they do it on purpose so they can be the "most talked" about toy/game etc. for the holiday season.  The game has been hard to find since at least last Christmas.  Bump up production.  My thoughts would be to boycott and not buy Nintendo products - let the consumer take control.  In my situation its for my children.  It is not fun to explain to your child why they didn't get the one thing they asked for.

I thought I may fall victim to the Wii shortage that appears to have existed since the launch over a year ago.  Being a lifetime gamer and now a father of a young family, the Wii appears to be the perfect cross generation game system.  Although my mother took it upon herself to purchase this game system for my family, it is a shame she had to spend a little extra to get it on eBay.  I also find it hard to believe that even some games are hard to get....I happened upon a shipment of Guitar Hero III for the Wii which all of my kids and my wife were really into playing at the store....so I snatched one up for a paultry $89....and felt lucky to be one of the few to do so.  Seems like a VERY big opportunity to get people onboard with this system....

This was the same problem last year bla bla bla, "No Wii's" you think they would of stocked up all summer getting ready for this years Christmas, now they are telling us they are having building issue's with parts, come on just give up already and close up shop, I am tired of hearing every year these company's problems, I am going to buy a system that is in stock so I guess they just lost one more customer, so bye bye Nitendo Wii and hello X-box 360 were going where the product is and has more games to boot, they need to stop relying on these over sea country's and build a system here in the U.S.A come up with our own game system, they could call the system "plenty in stock" lol.

Quickly now!!  How many of you believe that this is a real shortage?  Notice that the TV ad blitz continues and no disclaimers are attached alerting consumers to any potential supply problem!! I cannot believe that production of 1.8 million units per month is insufficient. This type of basic dishonesty is one of many reasons that I will never buy any Nintendo product!!

Just want to say that my son is getting an Xbox 360 this year because I could not find a Wii in the stores when I was shopping.  I am sure that I am not the only one, either.

The odds of me buying another system before the next generation comes out is slim to none, so Nintendo has lost a sale and it is more likely that I will be buying Microsoft's next generation because of the amount of software I will have bby that time.

Simply put:  Nintendo is losing a lot of sales (now and in the future) because they cannot keep their products in stock a year after it's initial release.

I waited in line at a Toys-R-Us at 5AM when the store opened @ 8 AM !  I was #24 of 26 available units !  The first person in line was in her late 40's early fifty's and was there OVERNIGHT !  She got on line at 10 PM the night before !  NOT WORTH THAT TO ME !  By the way; the temperature was 26 degrees !

where can i buy a wii wv 25812

I'm one of those over 50 women that will  not stand in line. I had planned to buy three systems for my daughters and their families this year. Guess I will have to find them something else.

I think it's a great game, love to play it. I bowl just as bad on the game as I do in reality!!

I have been very dissappointed this year...I had it all set that the wii would be my childrens big family gift this year and haven't been able to get one....I can't pay the $500 since I have a big family and many more gifts to buy.....So it's very very dissappointing, not to be able to give them that.....I know they would have been thrilled.....

My husband and I have been kicking ourselves for not looking for the Wii in the off season.  It's at the top of my 3 boys' Xmas list.  Got news that Best Buy was getting some in Sunday so husband went early and got in line.  Got last number but we had to tag team so he met me, gave me the number and I headed back to the store.  Long story short, two Wii's left, long line of people with NO numbers, I walk in (having not been waiting in this line) and give them my number, walk out with my Wii and all the components.  We did all the waiting in line just not in the way people saw it.  Needless to say I almost started a riot!  I jokingly asked the cashier for an armed escort to my car.  Instead I put on my sunglasses and bolted to my car as fast a I could.
