Nintendo shortage Wii-lly hurts company

I was shopping at a Best Buy in San Jose yesterday and here's what I found:

Stacks of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. When I asked where the Wiis were, a saleswoman gave a small snort and shook her head. The store was out.

It's a common scenario across the country, and in other parts of the world. A year after its release, the console that many expected would be in third place has become a hit of such proportions that people still line up overnight to buy one. I've had a Wii since its launch, and spent a good chunk of the weekend playing "Super Mario Galaxy." This console definitely holds up over time. [readmore]

Wii mania is in full swing right now, with the system selling for $400 or $500 on eBay. And while it's great to be making the must-have gift this year, Nintendo execs are rightfully bemoaning the missed opportunities the shortage is creating.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently said the high demand is keeping the company from its goal of selling the Wii to non-traditional gamers, such as women and 40- and 50-year olds who aren't video game fans.

"They aren't going to sleep outside of a store overnight or visit a retailer five or six times," he said. "It is literally a missed opportunity."

Fils-Aime was more critical in another interview: "A shortage benefits no one," he said. "We're disappointed. This was all about how we didn't accurately estimate demand. We need to be more bullish about the potential for the Wii."

So there it is. Nintendo didn't have enough faith in its own system, and is paying the price this holiday. The company is cranking out 1.8 million consoles per month and says it simply can't produce any faster. CEO Satoru Iwata has said that one bottleneck after another keeps popping up on the production line, and that slows everything down.

It's a huge misstep, with Microsoft and Sony happy to provide an alternative for frustrated parents who can't find a Wii. Sony CEO Howard Stringer is practically gloating these days. "It's a little fortuitous that the Wii is running out of hardware," he said recently.

If Nintendo is helping competitors sell consoles, something is seriously out of whack. Fils-Aime is right to be disappointed. The Wii is on a lot of Christmas lists, but this is not a holiday Nintendo should be proud of.

i have 10 wiis for sale with 5 sports games for 500.  903 513 6275  cust pays shipping.  new in box with reciept

I'm one of those targeted women in the 40 to 50 year old range who wanted to buy one and ended up with a Playstation instead. As a marketing professional, I say Nintendo blew it big this year.

The fact that consoles are not readily available a full year after release shows that Nintendo does not care about customers. This, as well as a shortage of great new games (including the loss of Resident Evil) have made me skip this generation of platforms. I may re-enter the gaming market in the future, but with the latest Legend of Zelda already played on Gamecube over a year ago (and who knows when another will be ready), and no new Nintendo Resident Evil forthcoming, I haven't even played ANY video game in months.

The gaming infighting has chilled the market for me, and I am unwilling to invest hundreds of dollars when game quality and even availability are in serious question.

This is why we purchased our Wii this summer!!

I know I am done looking all over god's creation for this. Back to the PS2 for me.

There is a Wii system packaged with the Guitar Hero III and the Dance Dance Revolution at a children's chairy auction site. Go to www.mix971.net and click on Radiothon.  Anything above retail price can be claimed on your taxes.  The auction ends Saturday 12-8-07.

"Is wii there yet?"My husband asks every couple of hours. "No, net yet," I reply.  Our quest is not to fullfil the wishes of our child. Nintendo has done a stellar marketing campaign to the aging baby boomers, whose fingers can't speed over the X - Square - Circle of the other controllers. In researching Wii, a Gen-Xer game store clerk told us that "The Wii is for kids under 12, senior citizens and drunks." Okay two out of three ain't bad. This is definately our game system. That is if, we could find wii. We are on the Quest for Wii. But after one foray at 5:30 am to K-Mart (only had 8 - line around the store), we refuse to rush around on Sunday morning and we won't camp out throughout Saturday night. Tried web searchers and found them sold out at Home Depot. Yes, Home Depot. And we refuse to overpay on e-bay. So, we will wait for wii. Wii does not need to be under our Christmas tree. But, I know that there will be a pouty 59 year old on Christmas morning, since looking for his..sorry.. our wii.

Thought you might be interested in this article.  Your Mom worked her usual magic and got you one of these machines.  There must have been 30 people waiting in line only to be told that they had given out the 20 coupons 2 hours before they got there.  Over fifty people waited in line from 6:00AM until 8:00AM to get the coupons just so they could buy the Wii.

It would also be nice if you could call you Aunt's while they are at our house to say hello and thank them for decorating the Christmas tree.  They spent a lot of time and effort doing it especially for you.  Gigi last night with be Tuesday night.  Paula is leaving later.

Looking forward to having you back home.

Dad

We were going to get a Wii for Christmas for our kids, we don't currently own any video game consoles, but can't seem to find one anywhere.  I don't have time to shop around constantly trying to get one.  So we bought a new treadmill instead, we figure we will get one next year.

Thank God I got mine the Monday after Thanksgiving!!!!
