Nintendo shortage Wii-lly hurts company

I was shopping at a Best Buy in San Jose yesterday and here's what I found:

Stacks of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. When I asked where the Wiis were, a saleswoman gave a small snort and shook her head. The store was out.

It's a common scenario across the country, and in other parts of the world. A year after its release, the console that many expected would be in third place has become a hit of such proportions that people still line up overnight to buy one. I've had a Wii since its launch, and spent a good chunk of the weekend playing "Super Mario Galaxy." This console definitely holds up over time. [readmore]

Wii mania is in full swing right now, with the system selling for $400 or $500 on eBay. And while it's great to be making the must-have gift this year, Nintendo execs are rightfully bemoaning the missed opportunities the shortage is creating.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently said the high demand is keeping the company from its goal of selling the Wii to non-traditional gamers, such as women and 40- and 50-year olds who aren't video game fans.

"They aren't going to sleep outside of a store overnight or visit a retailer five or six times," he said. "It is literally a missed opportunity."

Fils-Aime was more critical in another interview: "A shortage benefits no one," he said. "We're disappointed. This was all about how we didn't accurately estimate demand. We need to be more bullish about the potential for the Wii."

So there it is. Nintendo didn't have enough faith in its own system, and is paying the price this holiday. The company is cranking out 1.8 million consoles per month and says it simply can't produce any faster. CEO Satoru Iwata has said that one bottleneck after another keeps popping up on the production line, and that slows everything down.

It's a huge misstep, with Microsoft and Sony happy to provide an alternative for frustrated parents who can't find a Wii. Sony CEO Howard Stringer is practically gloating these days. "It's a little fortuitous that the Wii is running out of hardware," he said recently.

If Nintendo is helping competitors sell consoles, something is seriously out of whack. Fils-Aime is right to be disappointed. The Wii is on a lot of Christmas lists, but this is not a holiday Nintendo should be proud of.

Waited in line in the rain in Memphis, Tn for a Wii for my 7 year old son.  Had no choice, was I going to tell him Santa didn't have enought or the kid down the street was good all year and you were not?  I missed Sunday School and Chuch, that just isn't right.

I cannot get this system anywhere! I am a known Wii stalker now. I have 4 stores on speed dial and ready to go at a moments notice. One store got over 12 in one day and they were gone in 2 minutes!

With the holiday shopping season upon us I am contemplating a Play Station or XBox as a substitute.

Any suggestions?

You can get them in canada , they don't have near the shortage. Good if you live near a border town.

MY WIFE AND I WANTED TO PURCHASE A WII AND TRY OUR HAND AT THE GAME, WE HAVE BEEN TO QUITE A FEW DIFFERENT STORES, BUT JUST CAN'T SEEM TO LOCATE ONE, THE ONLY ONE'S WE SEE ARE ON E-BAY WHERE THEY ARE SOLD FOR TWICE THE ORIG. COST, AND YOU THE PEOPLE SELLING THEM HAVE 20, 30 EVEN UP TO 50 UNITS PER SELLER, BUT YET THE RETAILERS HAVE POSTED 1 PER CUSTOMER, HOW DO THESE PEOPLE ON EBAY GET SO MANY, MY WIFE AND I BELIVE THAT MOST OF THESE PEOPLE WORK FOR THE RETAILERS AND PURCHASE THE WII'S BEFORE THE STORE OPENS FOR THE DAY, SO NOW I THINK SOME WILL LOSE A SALE BECAUSE OF THIS BECAUSE I WILL NOT PAY THE PRICE BEING ASKED ON EBAY. SORRY NINTENDO JUST NO SALE HERE.

I am a mid-twenties, Black female professional and my mother is a semi-pro bowler. I was so excited to see the Wii Bowling game. I have been looking for a Wii for months to give my mom for Christmas. I wanted to surprise her with the game system just as she did for me and my sister Christmas of 1989 with the original Nintendo game system. Unfortunately, I have been forced to get her 'mom stuff' for Christmas. I hope to find a Wii in the months following the holiday. Nintendo has gliched my plans a bit, but my money will definitley go elsewhere.

The Wii is one of the best systems out there ever since I've owned all types of video game systems growing up. I've got to give Nintendo credit after one year of launch and being the way the Wii is geared towards younger generation I'm hooked. I'm 27 and it's brought the kid out of me again thanks Nintendo.

I've been looking for the WII ever since last year.  They need to open more plants, hire more people and step up production.  Whats causing the bottle necks!!

It's a shame, because I have an aunt who is 50+ years old, and she wants a Wii for Christmas. She feels it's a system that she and her husband can share. It will allow them to interact with one another  on a fun and competitive level while both are getting much needed time off of the couch. Her husband has gone to countless stores before sunrise in hopes of being the first in line to snag a Wii. It's a shame that Nintendo has really dropped the ball.

My son wanted the wii and when I found out I had to wait in line at 7:00 am I said forget it!! Then I was in Toys R Us one day and saw a small line in the electronics dept. I went to see what was up and saw they had wii's so I got one. So I was at the right place at the right time, but I'd never wait outside in the middle of winter for one.

I went to the store 5 times to buy a Wii.  I became so fustrated that I bought a playstation 3.
