Nintendo shortage Wii-lly hurts company

I was shopping at a Best Buy in San Jose yesterday and here's what I found:

Stacks of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consoles. When I asked where the Wiis were, a saleswoman gave a small snort and shook her head. The store was out.

It's a common scenario across the country, and in other parts of the world. A year after its release, the console that many expected would be in third place has become a hit of such proportions that people still line up overnight to buy one. I've had a Wii since its launch, and spent a good chunk of the weekend playing "Super Mario Galaxy." This console definitely holds up over time. [readmore]

Wii mania is in full swing right now, with the system selling for $400 or $500 on eBay. And while it's great to be making the must-have gift this year, Nintendo execs are rightfully bemoaning the missed opportunities the shortage is creating.

Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime recently said the high demand is keeping the company from its goal of selling the Wii to non-traditional gamers, such as women and 40- and 50-year olds who aren't video game fans.

"They aren't going to sleep outside of a store overnight or visit a retailer five or six times," he said. "It is literally a missed opportunity."

Fils-Aime was more critical in another interview: "A shortage benefits no one," he said. "We're disappointed. This was all about how we didn't accurately estimate demand. We need to be more bullish about the potential for the Wii."

So there it is. Nintendo didn't have enough faith in its own system, and is paying the price this holiday. The company is cranking out 1.8 million consoles per month and says it simply can't produce any faster. CEO Satoru Iwata has said that one bottleneck after another keeps popping up on the production line, and that slows everything down.

It's a huge misstep, with Microsoft and Sony happy to provide an alternative for frustrated parents who can't find a Wii. Sony CEO Howard Stringer is practically gloating these days. "It's a little fortuitous that the Wii is running out of hardware," he said recently.

If Nintendo is helping competitors sell consoles, something is seriously out of whack. Fils-Aime is right to be disappointed. The Wii is on a lot of Christmas lists, but this is not a holiday Nintendo should be proud of.

It took all of two weekends but we finally got a WII for our 12 year old.  Everyone says they do not stay on the shelves.

It's pretty pathetic that you can't get the Wii for Christmas, they had a whole year to be prepared for the upcoming holidays and Christmas rush. Shame on Nintendo.....I bought an Xbox instead.

I got lucky and was able to get a Wii at regular price a few weeks ago but now I am trying to find certain games such as Guitar Hero 3 for it and it is absolutely impossible to find at a reasonable price. Nintendo obviously cannot keep up with demand but they should have planned for this over the last year after they saw that the Wii was in such demand. It is truly a foul on their part for not planning ahead for this holiday season.

With six thousand of them on e-bay, I really don't think the problem is with shortage at nintendo.  The problem is greed.  People who work at the stores are buying them up as fast as they come in and putting them on e-bay for more than they paid for them. Same as scalping if you ask me.

If Nintendo cannot meet the demand, the least they could do is stop the TV commercials and other advertising for the Wii console.  This only encourages disappointment and  bad feelings.  My fruitless efforts to purchase a system for over a year have now convinced me that I no longer want one, or anything to do with Nintendo.

Nintendo has been pulling this crap for years.  Note that both the Xbox 360 and the PS3 have had multiple price reductions after their first years.  Not so with the Wii.  Remember, the Wii runs on Gamecube hardware, and there is no shortage of Gamecubes....

Been trying to get one since last Christmas, makes me angry that they didn't make enough to meet the demands!

WOW!  I am a 40 year old mom and I have been the one wanting a Wii.  My Playstation husband and Nintendo kids could care less.  SOMEHOW Nintendo hit the market for us 40 year old non gamers to want a Wii.  I didn't even know I was a target.  I finally just said forget it about this Christmas, I will take it for our Feb anniversary.

The profiteers that sell Wii's online are happy too.  There's something wrong when these people have a dozen or so Wii's to sell on ebay and Craigslist at twice the retail price and there are none in stores.

The Nintendo execs are right.  As a 40-ish woman who is definitely NOT a gamer, and never even liked to play Pacman back in the 80's, I was hoping to get a Wii this Christmas.  A friend has one, and it is so much fun, and the controls are not complicated at all.  But I will not sleep outside of the store or pay 3x the price just to get one either.  Eventually, I'll probably get one, but as of now they missed a sure sale.
