Sony blinks in high-def battle

Sony head Howard Stringer talked Blu-Ray this week during a visit to Manhattan, saying his format is in a "stalemate" with HD-DVD.  He played down the battle as no biggie.

"It doesn't mean as much as all that," he said. He added that the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD teams once talked about uniting under one format, but that didn't happen.

I think Sony just blinked. Stringer drops bombs like these just as we're heading into the holiday shopping season? Shoppers are going to be picking a side in the great Blu-Ray/HD-DVD fight, but does Sony even care?

There are two big things going for HD-DVD, which is backed by Toshiba and Microsoft. The first is that the price of players is dropping to $200. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Sony's PlayStation 3 is still the cheapest Blu-Ray player, at $399. (I watch Blu-Ray movies on my PS3, and they are fantastic).

Another thorn in Blu-Ray's side is that the HD-DVD camp paid off persuaded Paramount in August to ditch Blu-Ray and put out its movies exclusively in HD-DVD.

Blu-Ray has some wins too. Target stores are selling exclusively Blu-Ray players this holiday (although Target.com has HD-DVD), and Blockbuster has gone Blu-Ray exclusive as well.

Stringer should be readying for the big holiday fight, drinking raw eggs and listening to "Eye of the Tiger." But instead he's almost dismissive of the entire issue.

HD-DVD will win this battle, hands down.  The adult industry backs it, and lets face it, do you think more people will buy a movie they are likely to watch once ,ala Shrek III, or a movie they'll watch frequently , ala adult films?  DVD Sales are down in general because , well, most of the movies that are out now arent that great-- They warrant one, maybe two viewings... And if you're going to watch a movie once,  you'll rent it for $4 (or less if you're a netflix/blockbuster online subscriber) rather than pay $20 for it.

The adult industry killed the betamax, just like it will kill Blu-Ray.

Blu ray vs HD DVD , I don't give a damm. Long life to my kids' VCR and DVD players!

My belief is that Sony makes money on their proprietary formats even when they eventually fail, because of the higher selling price.

Beta - dead

Mini-Disc - dead

Memory Stick - on the way out

Blu-Ray - will fail soon enough

Who will win in the HD-DVD vs. Blu Ray war?

There are various ways a dolphin has of showing that she or he is interested in sex. Males are probably the easiest to detect. They will swim around, sporting an erection (anywhere between 10 to 14 inches long for a Bottle-nose), and will have no bones about swimming up to you and placing their member within reach of your hand. If you are in the water, they may rub it along any part of your body, or wrap it around your wristor ankle. (Dolphin males have a prehensile penis. They can wrap it aroundobjects, and carry them as such.) Their belly will also be pinkish in colour, which also denotes sexual excitement.

I hope this helps.

Not a big deal anyways since there isn't going to be a significant volume of either bought in my opinion.

The author forgot to mention that Disney (ever hear of them?!?!) has adopted Blu-ray as their sole HD format...

They can continue with individual battles, but that war is already over.

The winner will be the format that the porn industry decides upon. As with VHS.

seriously, whats up with all the negativity? Whoever does a better job of marketing and distribution will win the HDdvd/bluray battle. Just like what happened in the vhs/beta, PC/mac and all other battles of this type. If the "quality" is comparable, or at least acceptable (which it is), the cheapest and easiest to get will win. Think of it like hamburgers. McDonalds hamburgers are not in the same league with your local specialty hamburger place, or even with a national chain like Red Robin. But McDonalds outsells everyone else by billions of units a year. Why, since their product is not as good? Because it's not "bad" and it is really freakin easy to get and is dirt cheap! This battle is no different. It has nothing to do with evil corporate or government forces, just standard economics. Relax, it'll be ok

"And drop the "paid off" comment in your story.  Are you writing for adults or conspiracy theorists? " -Jeff

If you do a simple google search of "Paramount Hd-dvd" you will see that indeed paramount was given $150 million in incentives to sell hd-dvd's exclusively. That sounds like a pay off to me. Maybe you would prefer the writer of the aritcle say Paramount was persuaded by 150 million reasons hint hint.

I paid $98 for a toshiba hd dvd player at walmart last week during a secret sale promotion  , basically the same price as an upconvert model ...
