Sony blinks in high-def battle

Sony head Howard Stringer talked Blu-Ray this week during a visit to Manhattan, saying his format is in a "stalemate" with HD-DVD.  He played down the battle as no biggie.

"It doesn't mean as much as all that," he said. He added that the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD teams once talked about uniting under one format, but that didn't happen.

I think Sony just blinked. Stringer drops bombs like these just as we're heading into the holiday shopping season? Shoppers are going to be picking a side in the great Blu-Ray/HD-DVD fight, but does Sony even care?

There are two big things going for HD-DVD, which is backed by Toshiba and Microsoft. The first is that the price of players is dropping to $200. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Sony's PlayStation 3 is still the cheapest Blu-Ray player, at $399. (I watch Blu-Ray movies on my PS3, and they are fantastic).

Another thorn in Blu-Ray's side is that the HD-DVD camp paid off persuaded Paramount in August to ditch Blu-Ray and put out its movies exclusively in HD-DVD.

Blu-Ray has some wins too. Target stores are selling exclusively Blu-Ray players this holiday (although Target.com has HD-DVD), and Blockbuster has gone Blu-Ray exclusive as well.

Stringer should be readying for the big holiday fight, drinking raw eggs and listening to "Eye of the Tiger." But instead he's almost dismissive of the entire issue.

I lived through the BetaMax - VHS debacle and I'm not doing it again. I'll wait till one of the two formats becomes the standard and then drop my bucks.

You'd think they'd learn that no one comes out a winner when you have two formats competing with each other. It splits market share and slows down the availability of titles.

I'm still waiting, and I'm still going to wait until a universal player becomes more affordable.  Mean while, I quit buying DVDs and I'm not going to buy one until this issue is resolved.

I think Blu-Ray will go the way of BetaMax just as LCD HDTV will eventually phase out Plasma.

I actually thought that BetaMax was a much better technology over VHS just as I feel a HD Plasma picture is somewhat better than an LCD, but America will choose and I think Blu-Ray will fade just as Stringer has stated however thinly veiled.

Sorry Target and Blockbuster since I have HD/DVD and being your notinterested in selling them to me I will do all my shopping elsewhere this Christmas. My time is too valuable to go to store that doen't sell what I need.

HD-DVD and Blu-ray are both insignificant and won't matter.  In a year or two, with IPTV and large media centers in the home, my entire movie collection will be on my hard drive with no loose disks anywhere to be found.  Just as MP3's have reduced the importance of CD's with people downloading their music directly to computers and mp3 players, DVD's will become less important as people save movies to their Ipod and their home media centers.  The HD-DVD vs. BLU-RAY battle is a battle between two technologies that are ultimately pointless.

We know this will be decided the same way as VHS vs. Beta.  The winner will be the one with more porn titles.

1. XBOX360 does NOT come with HD-DVD.  You have to purchase the player as an accessory for $199 more.

2. Blu-Ray can hold MUCH, MUCH more data than HD-DVD (as in several gigabytes worth).  Not that big of a difference now, but it will be in the next few years.  Heavenly Sword for PS3's audio track alone was larger than the native capacity of a HD-DVD.

I have both formats (and I enjoy both)...right now HD-DVD is probably the best bet, but with the way data and storage capacity is increasing every day, Blu-Ray wins out in the long run due to its immense storage capacity.  It all comes down to who you want to put your money on...the turtle or the hare.

As for me, Whatever format Star Wars comes out on, that will win my $$$

HD DVD is still the cheapest and looks exactly the same as Blu-ray. Most consumer aren't stupid. The only distinct advantage Blu-ray has is the amount of storage. Who care. I already have a hard drive that can store as much information as I want.

DVD is still kicking both their butts. I'm not buying a new format until they make me by taking away DVD.

I have HD TVs and would like an HD movie player but I'm not going to pay the prices that are out right now and I'm not going to buy 2 HD formats because they each have exclusives. DVD works fine for me I have bad eyes anyways and I have HBO HD :p
