Google gets into the wireless business

When Google came on the scene 10 years ago, the PC business was pretty much figured out. Lots of companies made computers, but Microsoft monopolized the operating systems that ran on them. It was Microsoft's world, and as a software developer Google had to learn to live in it.

Not so with cell phones. There are lots of handset makers, and several companies make operating systems and other software for the devices. Google either has to play ball with those companies or control the mobile environment on its own.

Enter today's announcement of a Google operating system that will prominently feature the company's applications -- mail, maps, search and so on. And Google is going to entice handset makers by giving them the system for free. The phones probably won't have the name Google anywhere on them, and the first ones won't be available until the second half of '08.

This is a tough road for Google. People just want the best phones out there. Google's software has to be as good, if not better, than anything Microsoft, Symbian or Apple has to offer. Web searching has to be fast. Video should be seamless. Maps and directions can't be buggy.

In other words, Google has to nail this. As in better than iPhone nail this. If it can't, then don't expect handset makers to be on board. There are more issues here to consider as well:

Carriers are important. Google is doing a lot to appeal to the guys that make phones, but what about the carriers? AT&T and Verizon aren't part of the alliance of companies supporting Google's efforts. Sprint and T-Mobile are showing initial support but aren't publicly committing to the system. Why would carriers want to be a part of this?

Why would I want one? I haven't seen anything yet that would make me want a phone with Google's software on it. Google's Andy Rubin says Google's phone will have lots of Net applications, which will distinguish it from others. But you can bet that competitors are working on this as well.

What about advertising? Google makes its money from selling ads. It's giving the phone software away for free. Are the phones going to be stuffed to the gills with ads?

Google's stock price rose 2% today on the news. Is that a collective yawn from Wall Street? Here's what others are saying:

BusinessWeek's Rob Hof: "So while the effort is real--a software development kit will be available in a week--it seems clear that this is also a club to hammer carriers into opening up. If that happens, it would be victory enough for Google. And more important, for the rest of us."

Om Malik: "This is one massive PR move, with nothing to show for it right now, and it seems like there are other unknown reasons (Facebook ad platform launch perhaps) for the motivation here. "

Techdirt: "The iPhone redefined what mobile phones could be overnight. Almost every company in the space has adjusted at least some part of their strategy to deal with the iPhone. The Google phone platform won't have that same overnight impact, and depending on how well it works, it may never have that kind of impact."

I South Africa costs of using a cell phone is prohibative.R your prices going to b cheaper?

"Google's software has to be as good, if not better, than anything Microsoft"

Look who's talking.

What makes Google search different than yahoo and other search engine? Better results, less ads, .... I think they are now trying to access the OS world and the easiest entrance is the Mobile OS which maybe the first step into Google OS

First of all any company that wanted to make money would never create a product that "just made and recieved calls" if u think thats what u need then dont buy a cell phone, carry change. This in 2007 almost 2008 and cell phones do things that people want them to do or the companies wouldnt make them and that is more than make calls, we need info on the go, we need music, we need cameras  we need text messaging if u dont u should go live in the hills where u belong. Google has proven its self and its definatly a powerhouse, i say lets see what they have to inovate a technology that is slowly getting old fast!

have been with Sprint for several years and If they had a better deal and could show me an outstanding effort in gaining more into it. I might turn towards it. If they offered more equipment with it without paying for it then I might consider. Definately Roaming in the world should be free, who wants to pay for anything extra when all you need is a phone that works with you and for you.

I don't think Google will make much of an impact unless they have some great hardware technology  on their phone. The iPhone has some great new hardware like multi-touch screens and orientation sensors. Apple then made software to incorporate this hardware into their OS. If Google only comes out with a plain jane phone that has their OS, no one will care. Google is NOT going to build an entire infrastucture across the USA/World  of cell towers. So dont expect any cheaper cell bills. They will team up with some mobile operators who will continue to charge the same for service. The only money you may save will be on the cost of a phone the mobile operators provide. Since the phone wont require a software OS license, the operators can buy them cheaper. Since they will be giving out the OS, you can definately expect Ads. Maybe not initially, but Ads is what Google does. I'm sure every email you send from your phone will have an Ad, Text messages may have 1 word ads like PEPSI. All in all more competition is always better for us, so I'll see how this unfolds. I'll continue to support the Windows Mobile OS, it will be really hard to leave the PPC format.

"whatever google does - it makes the os free of viruses rather than the MS windows - so people love it."

HUH??? I think Google is a genious of a company, but I'm pretty sure they dont make any OS or have any software that makes OS's free of Viruses.

Well personaly if Google thinks that they need to take this step to keep their company going then I see their reason.  On the other hand we have all heard about the iphone complications(dead spots no picture messages ect.) but can google promise a better product for the same area of price.  If its just a nother one of the phones lost in the technostream it could have the potintial to completly distroy googles money making scheems.  Yet again my personal perjective is not to buy any product without proven results(including anything Microsoft puts out) Anyone can talk the talk but can google keep up with technology...?

Some people really needs a internet access so most of them use cell phones with full keyboard like Blackberries and Nokias e70 and some N series, others just to say that they have internet access which most of them uses regular cell phnes and now Iphones. I you got it, I´ll buy it.

I believe Google is trying to take over the world, and quite honestly, let them. I think they know what they are doing and they run their business on good solid values. So if they want to tackle the cell phone industry, I welcome them and give my support. These Telecom companies need a wake up call. They are too comfortable taking advantage of their customers because we now live in a wireless society and you can't live or do business without it anymore. They got you by the b***ls. Google, take me away....

well im with the nations fewest dropped calls network and i think if that is actually a true statement of fact.....we are in dire need of a better signal. can ya hear me now?
