Microsoft-Facebook deal: What a snooze

So Microsoft spent $240 million for a 1.6% stake in Facebook. Big deal. Microsoft spends that kind of money the way most of us shell out for a grande latte. It means nothing.

That hasn't stopped people from freaking out about Facebook's valuation. Microsoft's investment values the social networking site at $15 billion. But understand this: no one is buying Facebook. That $15 billion is an empty figure. It also means nothing.

I read this deal two ways. First, Facebook got a nice chunk of change from Microsoft without having to give much in return. Second, Microsoft made an advertising business deal and that's it.

Here's what it means for all the parties:

Microsoft -- Now gets to sell the banner ads on Facebook's pages outside the U.S., with both companies splitting the proceeds. (Microsoft is already handling the banner ads inside the U.S. through 2011.) Oh sure, Microsoft gets to say nyah-nyah-nyah to Google, who was also interested in a Facebook stake. But with just a 1.6% stake, Microsoft gets no control of Facebook.

Facebook -- Big winner. Doesn't have to get in bed with Microsoft too much, and takes home $240 million. Microsoft was reportedly once thinking about putting $300 million to $500 million into the startup for a 5% stake. Facebook was able to squeeze out a better deal. And Forbes says that Facebook just raised another $500 million from two New York City hedge funds.

Google -- A Facebook deal would certainly have helped the company's growing banner ad business, but Google doesn't need the partnership. Google already dominates the U.S. online advertising market and is moving into new businesses at top speed. Compared to that, Facebook is small potatoes.

I think facebook is sooo much more user-friendly than myspace. I log onto facebook everyday, and I love it for its simplicity and features. I hardly go to myspace on the other hand, because its hard to navigate. Also because I hate when I go to someone's profile and my speakers start blaring and/or I can't read the text because of their background.

who really cares

All you vista haters it is 10 times better than XP and is very comparible to any MAC OS.  And oh yeah MAC wouldn't even be in the work world if they didn't start using MS Office and intel processors and similar chip sets to PCs.  Also MS office 2007 is awesome.  It has way better features and fonts and is very user friendly.  90% of the people who knock Vista is because they never or bearly have used it.   So get off of your high apple horses and stop using your PC and buy a rip off MAC if you hate MS so much.

makes me wonder how much teenspot.com is worth

facebook is valued so high.  makes me wonder what a website like teenspot(dot)com would sell for.

You are all FOOLS!  Microsoft (MSFT) has gained upto 60,000% on an investment since 1986!  Just take a look and do the research. Compare it do GOOG or AAPL like people from above and you will find out how stupid some of your comments are. What GOOG started at $100 a share and is now at $668- which is 568%- Thats great but no 60,000% and AAPL in 1980 was about $3.00 a share which is now at $182=5,966% that is GREAT but still no 60,000%.

And not to mention Windows is on 90% of every single computer out there!!

I would agree that Facebook is not worth 15 billion to some-But facebook as an estimated 50 Million users, if they can figure out how to generate a few dollars a day off each member that site is worth 15 billion or more. Just compare that to how much money advertisers spend on playing an ad during the Super Bowl where 250 million to 500 million people are watching that is 1 Million dollars or more every 15 seconds of a commercial ad. What people have to consider is the response rate- if someone can get a half of a percent response from 50 Million=thats 250,000 responses.

BTW-I own MSFT and I bought it a little over a year ago when the stock was $25 a share-Now it is $31 a share which is a 24% gain in a little over a year-not bad for a safe investment-plus I got dividends which I have not considered in the equation.

Also I use Ubuntu Linux as an operating system on my home computer.

Good for Facebook!  I agree with Carla.  Facebook is much more user-friendly than MySpace AND uses better technology. no doubt.

thats an outrageous figure for a website.  makes me wonder what teenspot would be worth

Is Microsoft aware its own Money site has published a not so flattering article about itself?

thats an outrageous amount of money for a website.  makes me wonder how much teen-spot would be worth...
