Chipotle to collapse like a wet taco

Help me out here people. How is it that Chipotle Mexican Grill's stock can soar to new heights -- up by a gut-busting 126% over the past year -- while the rest of the casual restaurant industry is experiencing a bad case of indigestion?  Now I like a one-pound burrito as much as the next guy, but there's nothing that really separates Chipotle from the rest of the not-so-fast food Mexican chains such as Qdoba Grill (owned by Jack in the Box) and Moe's Southwest Grill (operated by franchisor Focus Brands). They all use fresh ingredients at a comparable cost served in a pleasant yet unspectacular atmosphere.

Maybe it's just that American consumers are growing tired of soup and sandwiches and are merely looking for something, and some where, different to eat. That might help to explain why Chipotle is forecasting comparable same-store sales growth in the high single, low double-digit area, while Panera Bread recently lowered its guidance to under 1%.  Talk about your flat bread!

Chipotle's sensational earnings growth is the principle reason for the stock's sizzling performance. Look for the stock to be red hot again tomorrow, as the company was added to the S&P MidCap 400 after Thursday's close, making a run to new high ground a good bet over the near-term.

However, after feasting on tomorrow's gain, investors might just want to head for the exits as there are a number of issues that could put at least a temporary end to the company's growth story.  FIrst, the fires in the California have destroyed much of the avocado crop. Combined with the general rise in food prices (for ingredients like meat and cheese), the hit to the avocado fields could squeeze operating margins going forward.

Second, the state of the economy is compelling many people that used to eat out to stay at home -- at least a little more often.  Given that Chipotle serves the lower end of the price spectrum, the company won't get hit as bad as say P.F. Chang's China Bistro, which recently guided lower due in part to slower traffic, but even a slight slippage could cause future growth to disappoint analysts and investors that are used to strong numbers.

That brings us to our last concern -- valuation. Chipotle trades at about 50 times next year's estimated earnings -- well above industry and market levels. Consequently, even the slightest disappointment could take a big bite out of the stock price.  Even at 40x next year's earnings the stock has downside to the $100 area.

About the only thing that concerns me is that there are a growing number of skeptics (see social picks and Jim Cramer), and I generally prefer to be ahead of the crowd. Nevertheless, there are simply too many risks and not enough reward at these levels to stick with the stock.

If Chipotle folds in the Houston market, it's because of advertising.  I have yet to see/hear a commercial for them on TV or the radio.

I'm doing my part though......go there about twice a week!

Here's a tip for those who complain about the price:  Just eat half of it.....those things are huge.  That's all anyone needs in one meal anyway.  Eat the other half for a later meal.  BAM!....the price just cut in half.

the best Burritos are 3 Amigos in half moom bay . ca ..no one compares. second  is Freebirds in Austin , tx ... otherwise, might as well go to taco bell.

Chipotle is just better. Their food is fresh, it is healthier... and the inconsistency in size.... Look up Chipotle on line and view it's nutritional values. One burrito, even small, meets most daily nutritional/caloric needs. You don't NEED a two pound burrito, even a one pound burrito. So personally, I think that arguement is ridiculous.

I live in Buffalo and wish there was a Chipolte in the area. There is a Moe's that I found and tried about 6 months ago. The food was poor and it was overpriced. I haven't been back since.

Chipotle's marketing/location/prices cater to the college/middle income class. The Qdobe in our town is not close to the university campus or on "restaurant row", it's in an odd location on the side of a shopping mall. We have one Chipotle that's located a block from the university/downtown/theater area and another located next to several restaurants across from a busy shopping mall. How many PF Changs do you see advertising free food for one day?

Chipotle is a great concept which is now copied by many. You pick from the fresh ingredients, you build the burrito as you want it. The price is a little high but every store I've been in you could share one burrito between two people and be very satisfied. Keep in mind these are franchises, and just like other franchises each shop is a bit different. I've had this experience with subs, one shop piles on the ingredients while another location just barely makes it. In the NW it is Mucho Gusto, same concept, same big as your face burrito, great tasting fresh ingredients, yes it is a bit over priced also but as I said most times you could just spit one and be very satisfied.

I'm sorry but Moe's and Chipotle have nothing on Willies.   Chipotle is more expensive and you have to pay for chips!  The rice is extremely bland compared to over places.  At Willies the food is fresh and its a decent price.

Recent articles and research shows that American's continue to eat out more with such expenses offsetting the cost and time of a home cooked meal.  Even in a recession, people will skip the expensive vacations and take in a restaurant and local attractions.  Eating out has not slowed over the past four decades.  If a restaurant has good food at a reasonable price and clean premises, it will more than just survive.  Chipotle still has a lot of potential for new store growth.  May this author wants to deflate the stock so he can buy in...the stock is still a good buy

Has anyone compared Chipotle's menu to Qdoba? Qdoba actually gives you different sauce options like the queso and ranchera sauces, not to mention salads, soups and quesadillas. I don't see that at Chipotle. Don't get me wrong, I like Chipotle but I pick variety over speed.

Moe's Blows!!! Chipotle Rocks!!! Comparing Moe's to Chipotle is like comparing Chinet to China. FYI, for those of you who are stating Chipotle is a McDonalds restaurant, they're not, Micky D's dropped them to focus on their own restaurants, that's when Chipotle's stock really took off.
