Chipotle to collapse like a wet taco

Help me out here people. How is it that Chipotle Mexican Grill's stock can soar to new heights -- up by a gut-busting 126% over the past year -- while the rest of the casual restaurant industry is experiencing a bad case of indigestion?  Now I like a one-pound burrito as much as the next guy, but there's nothing that really separates Chipotle from the rest of the not-so-fast food Mexican chains such as Qdoba Grill (owned by Jack in the Box) and Moe's Southwest Grill (operated by franchisor Focus Brands). They all use fresh ingredients at a comparable cost served in a pleasant yet unspectacular atmosphere.

Maybe it's just that American consumers are growing tired of soup and sandwiches and are merely looking for something, and some where, different to eat. That might help to explain why Chipotle is forecasting comparable same-store sales growth in the high single, low double-digit area, while Panera Bread recently lowered its guidance to under 1%.  Talk about your flat bread!

Chipotle's sensational earnings growth is the principle reason for the stock's sizzling performance. Look for the stock to be red hot again tomorrow, as the company was added to the S&P MidCap 400 after Thursday's close, making a run to new high ground a good bet over the near-term.

However, after feasting on tomorrow's gain, investors might just want to head for the exits as there are a number of issues that could put at least a temporary end to the company's growth story.  FIrst, the fires in the California have destroyed much of the avocado crop. Combined with the general rise in food prices (for ingredients like meat and cheese), the hit to the avocado fields could squeeze operating margins going forward.

Second, the state of the economy is compelling many people that used to eat out to stay at home -- at least a little more often.  Given that Chipotle serves the lower end of the price spectrum, the company won't get hit as bad as say P.F. Chang's China Bistro, which recently guided lower due in part to slower traffic, but even a slight slippage could cause future growth to disappoint analysts and investors that are used to strong numbers.

That brings us to our last concern -- valuation. Chipotle trades at about 50 times next year's estimated earnings -- well above industry and market levels. Consequently, even the slightest disappointment could take a big bite out of the stock price.  Even at 40x next year's earnings the stock has downside to the $100 area.

About the only thing that concerns me is that there are a growing number of skeptics (see social picks and Jim Cramer), and I generally prefer to be ahead of the crowd. Nevertheless, there are simply too many risks and not enough reward at these levels to stick with the stock.

the reason chiplote grill didn't make it is because their food is not even closer to a fast food mexican style.their food is so bland, so many flavor s mixed in the burrito that got lost in flavor. when  I used to make my tacos with th taco seasoning it used to be too much seasoned flavor. finally I got it!. I cooked my ground beef simple with salt and pepper the flavor is in the salsa, sour cream and guacamole. Great flavor!

I do not agree with the author of this article.   While it is similar to the other concepts Chipotle does so much more in terms of food quality, and its push with Food With Integrity that really seperates it from the rest.  I know my taste buds can tell the difference and hope you will notice the differences as well.   Chipotle has always been cleaner, and more real about what they are doing than the other"fresh" chains you mentioned.  I would like to see how "cheese sauce" is fresh.  Maybe fresh out of the bag ,laden with preservitives and chemicals.

If you want to eat natural foods prepared by real people you will choose Chipotle every time and I feel the educated population will choose the same.  While the stock is high, but I like what they are doing at Chipotle.  Check it out at Chipotle.com

Have a great day,

!!

You may be right about the stock valuation, but Chipotle's fare is waaayyy better than Moe's. I have a Moe's across the street from my office, and a Chipotle 5 miles down the road. I routinely drive the extra 5 miles for my lunch.

Peace be with you.

The reason I don't eat at Chipotle anymore is that they put way too much salt in their food.

Chipotle continues to grow because of teens.  Walk into any high school in Amercia and ask kids their favorite restaurant...Chipotle!  My company holds teen focus groups monthly and Chipotle is consistantly ranked as their #1 choice for fast food dining.

chipotles is the worst mexican food ever! And, way over priced... not even mexican food- more like american food in a tortilla . Yuk

Whoever wrote this obviously has never tried their chicken quesidillas

There was obviously not much research conducted before this story was written:

"Now I like a one-pound burrito as much as the next guy, but there's nothing that really separates Chipotle from the rest of the not-so-fast food Mexican chains such as Qdobe Grill (owned by Jack in the Box) and Moe's Southwest Grill (operated by franchisor Focus Brands). This confuses me.  Just as a casual consumer i notice a number of things that separates Chipolte from the others.  Maybe it's things so small that their competitors have failed to notice so that's how they are creating the gap......

First of all, i have eaten at a minimum of 7 to 10 different Moe's locations in the central Florida area and they DO NOT use 'as fresh' ingredients as Chipolte.  Everything just seems more crisp at Chipolte and less greasy.

Secondly, Chipolte is making a conscious effort to let me know that the meat i am eating is not pumped full of chemicals.  Sounds stupid, but it is a relaxing feeling knowing they are making the effort to serve naturally raised meats.

There are also other little differences such as fresh lettuce, specialty meats like the spicy shredded beef (barbacoa), and the cilantro white rice (which tastes ten times more fresh than the rubbery brown rice at Moe's.

These franchises may seem cookie cutter, but there are small differences that us sheep consumers pick up on - hence the soaring performance.  I am not a stock analyist and everything that goes up, must come down at some point.  Therefore i am not saying i would invest into their stock because it may have already ran its course;  I am just attempting to explain from a consumers perspective of why i think they are growing......

Anyone who know's authentic Mexican food  shouldn't have to ask why or what the difference is with these 3 restaurants. I have eaten at all 3 and can tell you from expereince that the stock for Chipotle Mexican Grill keeps rising for a reason, Qdobe & Moe's Southwest are good but no way do they come close to Chipotle Mexican Grill.

I absolutely love Chipotle ever since in arrived in Dallas TX about 8 or 9 years ago.

It will never collapse with me eating there twice a week!
