Sony screws up again with new PS3

Sony makes some historic blunders. One of the biggest was making digital music players that wouldn't play MP3s, the most popular digital music format. Those devices played Sony's own ATRAC format, which the company killed a few months ago.

Sony hasn't learned from its mistakes. Consider the PlayStation 3, the too-expensive game console that hasn't become the hit the company wanted. Sony's finally selling a cheaper PS3 in the U.S., just in time for the holidays. It'll cost $400, but will have only 40 gigabytes of storage -- half that of the standard version, which is getting a price cut to $500 from $600.

That's fine. Some people don't need more than 40 gigs anyway in a video game system. But get this: the cheap PS3 won't play games made for the PlayStation 2. That feature is called backward compatibility, and it's a dealbreaker. A typical PlayStation 2 owner probably has a nice library of video games. The new PS3 won't play any of them.

It's not that Sony doesn't know how to add backward compatibility. Other versions of the PS3 will play past games. Sony is simply removing this feature in the cheap PS3. Nintendo made backward compatibility a priority with its popular Wii system. Microsoft was clumsier, ensuring that many, but not all, of its original Xbox games could be played on the Xbox 360.

Sony has been bragging about its backward compatibility capabilities for years now. "Backwards compatibility, as you know from PlayStation One and PlayStation 2, is a core value of what we believe we should offer," said exec Phil Harrison in an interview last year.

So what happened to this core value? Sony now says that backward compatibility "is a nice secondary consideration, but it's far from the number-one priority."

Sony can't have it both ways. If it wants people to part with $400, it needs to take another look at those priorities.

I own a PS2 and I wouldn't sell it; it's a great system and serves well as a DVD player. However, I'm more about the games than I am the system. Thus far, Sony hasn't given me a compelling reason to purchase a PS3. The expense makes it hard to justify, and I don't want to switch systems if I feel like going back to Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.

At any rate, the key thing that would make me get a 360 over a PS3 is the fact that while Halo 3 is available only for the 360, GTA 4 will be available on both systems. Thus, Sony doesn't have a killer app game for the PS3 and THAT will be what hurts it the most.

Microsoft does this with the XBOX 360 Core and X360 Premium. Thanks for the information though. I have a lot of PS2 games and buying a cheaper PS3 with no BC doesn't justify a purchase. Currently, the PS3 doesn't have any killer games. I guess Christmas 2007 won't be my year for purchasing a PS3.

I agree with JP above.  It is quite a coincidence that this sounding board for anti-PlayStation is being held by the same company that sells the 360.  So if you want to see the godfathers of shifty corporate marketing and piracy than look no further than the three letters in your address bar (MSN).

Hey it still is a P3 and a blue ray player....all for $400 bucks.I dont like the fact that I cant play my P2 games, but they want you to buy P3 games. You get a P3 PLAYER+BLUERAY+40GB STORAGE.Not to shabby for $400.People complain way to much...I mean come on we pay $400 ofr a freaking phone.I will probably buy one now.

I am looking for a new game system for my son whom I purchased a PS1 & PS2 for, but the PS2 is no longer working, why would I buy him a PS3 when all the games he has is not compatable.  I may look into an XBOX if I have to start all over with purchasing games.  A single mother can't afford to dish out $400.00 for a game system and then hundrededs of dollars so he can have a few games to play on the new system.

this is so funny ppl are complaining about no backwards capability and are willing to go out and buy a wii or 360 where they still can't play the ps2 games come on ppl give your head a shake

If you want backwards compatitbility then buy the 60 gig or the 80 gig version. I own a PS3 and can tell you all that I am extremely happy with it. I thought I would be playing my PS2 games on it, but I played one of them for maybe a half hour and then lost the desire to play them again. If you add all of the things that the PS3 can do then it is worth a lot more than 500 dollars. I think starting next year the PS3 will start to win over the XBOX 360 and the Wii. The Wii is just a fad. Sony has a really good lineup of games for the holidays and next year. People just try to find every way to bash the PS3 they can. If you all are going to buy one of the other systems ask them about how well their system really does play the older generation games. I know the XBOX claims that it can, but they refuse to really give a percentage of how many, because it really doesn't do that well. I will add a couple of links so that everyone can have a more unbiased review. Enjoy.

What no one has mentioned is the FACT that the PS3 can play Blu-Ray and upgrades standard DVD's to near HD, right out of the box...360 cannot do that.  Also the older 360's no HDMI...uggghhh!  I have both systems but I play the PS3 more now because the HD quality is better and for the movie player...WOW!  Here soon the PS3 is releasing some high quality games that could put them inline with the 360.  Bottom line I like both systems but the Sony is hooked up in my main room to the big screen.

I'm sure Bill Gates has something to do the MSN Money. This might as well be an advertisement for Microsoft. At least find someplace neutral to post. You are talking about a device that will give you hundreds if not thousands of hours of pleasure. If its that big of a deal to play some old games with limited graphics then cough up a extra hundred bucks and get on with you life. This is pathetic.

I don't think playing PS2 games means all that much.  I was a Playstation fan and hated my Xbox.  When the 360 came out sooner than the next Gen Consoles I decided to get one.  I love my 360!!   I have considered several times to buy a PS3 but the reason I do not is because all the games I want to play they are coming out on the 360.  So I feel no need to spend 400 dollars on a new system when I already have a system that can play them.  Sony needs better PS only games to make people want to spend that money.
