Sony screws up again with new PS3

Sony makes some historic blunders. One of the biggest was making digital music players that wouldn't play MP3s, the most popular digital music format. Those devices played Sony's own ATRAC format, which the company killed a few months ago.

Sony hasn't learned from its mistakes. Consider the PlayStation 3, the too-expensive game console that hasn't become the hit the company wanted. Sony's finally selling a cheaper PS3 in the U.S., just in time for the holidays. It'll cost $400, but will have only 40 gigabytes of storage -- half that of the standard version, which is getting a price cut to $500 from $600.

That's fine. Some people don't need more than 40 gigs anyway in a video game system. But get this: the cheap PS3 won't play games made for the PlayStation 2. That feature is called backward compatibility, and it's a dealbreaker. A typical PlayStation 2 owner probably has a nice library of video games. The new PS3 won't play any of them.

It's not that Sony doesn't know how to add backward compatibility. Other versions of the PS3 will play past games. Sony is simply removing this feature in the cheap PS3. Nintendo made backward compatibility a priority with its popular Wii system. Microsoft was clumsier, ensuring that many, but not all, of its original Xbox games could be played on the Xbox 360.

Sony has been bragging about its backward compatibility capabilities for years now. "Backwards compatibility, as you know from PlayStation One and PlayStation 2, is a core value of what we believe we should offer," said exec Phil Harrison in an interview last year.

So what happened to this core value? Sony now says that backward compatibility "is a nice secondary consideration, but it's far from the number-one priority."

Sony can't have it both ways. If it wants people to part with $400, it needs to take another look at those priorities.

I agree whole heartedly about the backward compatibility issue.  But the biggest flub is that the most popular game, John Madden Football, is missing some of the most important features from the old version.  This game is a major driving factor and Sony is missing the boat.  The game is better on every other platform than it is on PS3.

Ha, Kim Peterson looks like someone who really knows about video gaming. Give me a break. I personally own a PS3 and a Wii, and yes I did purchase both with my own money. So I have the right to make the statement that Sony's is by far the superior piece of machinery. It's really no contest. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy playing the Wii, what it does it does right, but not even packed with the power the PS3 is.  Now I do not know about the Xbox 360 - never played one, but it does look like a pretty darn good system also. But I just don't have any love for Microsoft, not a fan of Bill Gates and his dirty underhanded technology stealing ways, uh hum - I mean "business sense."

Yes backwards compatibility is important, but when you have to send back 1 out of every 3 XBox 360's (including mine) due to a hardware failure....the PS3 might still look pretty good after all.

yeah remember beta max??

Although backwards compatibility can be nice, the install base for the Playstation 2 is so large that Sony made a good decision in removing it for the Playstation 3.  The focus is now on the PS3, not the PS2, and if Sony wants to emphasize users buying new games, then so be it.

As for the 40 GB hard drive, you are receiving a price drop of 100 dollars for the removal of 40 GB of hard drive space and software emulation.  I am now considering whether I am going to buy a PS3 for the cheaper price, simply because I know that I can invest another $100 and put a 160 GB hard drive into the Playstation 3 and remove the 40 GB hard drive.  Unlike Microsoft, Sony actually allows their users to change out hard drives in the system, even giving them instructions in how to do so.

At some point I am sure that Sony will be releasing their old games for the PSOne and the PS2 on the PS3 as downloads so that you can buy them and play them if you wish on your PS3.  Some times you have to take chances in the videogame industry, and I think that Sony is doing a good thing by making their PS3 cheaper.

Another reason for sony fans to migrate to the 360 or wii. Like people needed another reason besides PS3s lackluster game selection.....

I can't agree more - Removing backwards compatability is a monumental blunder.  We have been waiting to upgrade to the PS3 until the price point became more acceptable.  The price for this system is more reasonable but now this isn't an upgrade.  With no ability to play our existing games, why wouldn't I consider another platform like the 360 or wii?  Sony just wiped out the most compelling reason to stay with the Playstation.

Um, no...it will play games for the ps2, just not all of them, exactly like the 360.  But of course, look at the website where I read this story.

Amen!

This is why I am a XBOX person now. Have been for a few years.
