Ebay tries to wash away mistakes with new service

Another day, another doomed social networking service launches. Today brings us the "Neighborhoods" community at eBay, which is struggling as the number of auctions on the site decline.

The service is truly cringeworthy. In the Coffee Lovers forum, eBay employees have obviously tried to seed some discussions by posting things like, "Isn't morning a great time for coffee?" Yeah, that's going to stimulate some fascinating comments.

The idea is to stem the losses at eBay by keeping people on the site. Ebay's listings dropped 6% in the second quarter from the first and 2% from the year-ago period. Listings by active "power sellers" were also down an astonishing 25% from the year-ago period.

Meanwhile, eBay is still reeling from its hugely bungled Skype acquisition and from bad press like this article, where a Led Zeppelin promoter says, "I wish eBay would drop dead and die."

If eBay wants to keep people on its site, it should consider dropping all the fees that sellers get hit with. There are cheaper ways to sell (Craigslist, anyone?). Asking "What has Star Wars meant to you?" is not going to cut it.

The most troubling thing with eBay is their PAYPAL unit. It is criminal when one thinks of the fees seller have to absorb.  It is a double whammy. It is understandable that we get charged a fee to accept credit cards.  2.9% is pretty darn high, considering what Costco would charge.  What is criminal is, as a seller with a paypal business account, is I have to absorb the 2.9% fee on ANY payment I receive, even if the payment is made with existing paypal funds or bank transfer.  They also block goggle pay service.  I think everyone in the world knows what paypal is, so why spend $$$ on TV commericials? or advertising.  They should use those funds to reduce fees. A reduction in eBay and Paypal fees is the only way to attract more people to the venue.  Craigslist is a better method to sell big tickets items if you live in a major city and local pickup is an option

Was an ebay seller, fees became outrageous and the site almost seemed to cater to fraud and unbelievable shipping/handling fees.  I have since hung up my hat and could not been happier.

I've been on Ebay almost since the beginning.  The fees are the #1 reason I would not mind ending my Ebay dealings...they just go up and up.  I'm sorry, but Ebay and Paypal together do not deserve the sometimes 20% of my sale.

Yes, Yes, Yes!  Ebay was at one time a fun place to find the things that you needed at a reasonable - of not down right cheap - price.

Now, the "Auction" mechanism is tainted by bids that surely seem to be not on the straight and narrow.  All too often, a good deal is priced above what you'd pay for it locally.  Then there are the shipping and handling charges.  $12 - 15 for a letter sized package is ridiculous.  I believe that this is how many "Powqer Sellers" make their profit - overcharging for shipping and handling.

EBay used to be fun - now I don;t bother.

I love e-bay motors and have used it for buying and selling. HOWEVER, I would have to agree with Wendell, that fraud and deception are causing big problems. I have reported fraudulent listings, only to see them still up days later.

I agree that e-bay is no longer the bargain hunters paradise.  I used to purchae items that were priced far below market value but can no longer find these deals. If I do purchase something inexpensively, 99% of the time it is not in good condition and ands up getting trashed when received.  Feedback does no good as when you complain, the seller just leaves negative feedback in response!

I totally agree with several other posters. There are SO MANY eBay sellers selling merchandise for more than you would pay going to an actual retailer. These types of sellers really make me angry because they are taking advantage of the non savey eBay buyer who doesnt know to check regular retailers both online and local before they buy from eBay thinking they are getting a deal..

ebay is still awesom. its not really good for buying brand new products, but getting items that are slightly used for a much cheaper price is great. i just made two purchases, both for used items the first retails at $170, i paid $96 w/ shipping. the second retails for $1600, i paid $660 w/shipping. thats a good deal, there out there, you just gotta look!

eBay's seller's fees are crazy.  I loved to sell, but had to stop because the fees got out of control.  Also, I can't find a good deal anymore.  If I want to buy something, I'll check eBay first, then I'll check a few other sites.  The few other sites have the item a lot cheaper than eBay. So, I'm discouraged and hardly look at eBay anymore.  It's not like it used to be.

As far as the shipping people charge, while some are rediculous, most are high just to cover all the fees the seller has to pay for selling an item. I agree, they do need to maybe rethink the listing/selling fees !!
