Do you people realize the amount of product it takes to fill the shelves of Target, CVS, chain grocery stores just to name a few. These outlets are not selling bits and pieces any more. I owned hair salons for years, I bought into all the hoopla about Diversion. Then I spent years investigating..I can't (won't) say to much more, but I will say this The so called professinal lines are liars and eventually they will get caught. They know exactly what is going on. Matrix and Redken are owned by Loreal.(stock) They have to make $..Do you really believe Target and CVS are going to sell fake or contminated merchandise. There has to be a paper trail..Did you ever see some of the outdated product Regis salons sell. That's real professional...How can you as a small salon owner compete with JC PENNEYS salons who discount cheaper than salon owners buy...also have displays throughout their stores not just in the salon..Buy 1 get 1 for a $1..doorbusters everyother week...Tradesecrets salons in Malls, was part of the Regis chain(just sold of). The managers not hairstylist two chairs in the back no stylist on duty. set up just to sell professional products..If you do not see it being sold in Target it is because there is not enough demand. I could go on and on. The bottom line either Dump the line and get your own or organize salon owners and stylist and start demonstrations in front of Target CVS and your local Grocery stores don't buy any of their products....You think the teamster have alot of members...How many stylists do you think there are in the country? The World......Good luck God Bless and remember if you are not part of the solution you are part of the problem...

They spend millions to make the diversion illegal but failed. Now they are going directly to consumer basically scaring and threatening to protect their exclusivity monopoly.

The counterfeight claim does not hold water. Target could just as well sell counterfeight Johnson and Johnson products, but somehow it does not have to scare us.

Yes I am sure there are counterfeiters out there but big retailers like Target and Walmart are buying this stuff from the manufacturer. The manufacturers look to sell big orders and thats why they sell to the big retailers! All they have to do is stop selling to big retailers......oh but wait...Paul Mitchell and others would loose a lot of money not selling to them so instead they act like its a conspiracy against them so they can keep getting money on both sides of the isle!! The manufacturers are to blame not the retailers!

Many people who are regular shoppers at Target are still in denial, but it's finally starting to catch up. In the last several months Walmart has been kicking Target's butt. It's only going to get worse for Target, because their new CEO just like the previious one is totally clueless.

There are so many great product lines out there , I do not feel that there is any reason to be held "retail hostage" to the big product companies. Those products are only popular because we hairdressers made them so, and my clients will buy whatever product that I endorse.I also private label some things, then I am promoting only my salon. Another thing, any hairdresser who believes the hype about "collectors" buying products out of the back door of salons is being duped. I have been in business for 30 years and have the largest salon in my area, and have never even been approached nor know anyone who has been approached by these people. Yet, the local Target, Walgreens, Walmart, Schnucks, etc. have a steady supply of "professional only" products. I could believe that some products are diverted on a small scale by salons, but there is simply no way a salon could sell that much product. This stuff comes directly from the distributors and the manufacturers darn well know it. They can huff and puff about stopping diversion but it will never happen as long as hairdressers act as walking , talking, commercials for these guys. The only way to make it stop is to refuse to endorse any product that ends up in a retail store. In my salon, we don't waste our time telling our clients that these products could be old or fake of contaminated. We are the fashion industry, and we simply introduce our clients to the latest, greatest, product. Most clients who are willing to shell out 15 to 20 dollars for a bottle of shampoo usually prefer a more exclusive product anyway. The fact that it is at Target kind of makes it seem cheap, and simply pointing this out is usually enough to get a client to make a switch to a new product. If all hairdressers would do this it would take a big bite out of diversion problem.

I'm reading this article and your comments because I am considering starting a new business venture in the beauty industry. I am a manufacturer and importer and sell to all the major retailers, Target, Walmart, Walgreens, etc... So I know first hand how to sell to these retailers. Retailers spend a lot of money on their retail planograms. They need a steady and stable supplier for anything that they put on their shelves. The cost is to high for them to not have a supplier that will continue to sell them the same product month in and month out. The planogram is set for all of the stores company wide, this is 1600 stores in Targets case and 3200 in Walmarts case. This is a planned effort with manufactures and their selected distributors. Make no mistake, the big manufactures count on these numbers. Being a business owner and if I where in their shoes, I wouldn't be heartbroken over these activity. They LOVE it! Its all about the money, don't think its not for one minute. The retailers love it to.

And like Nikki posted, they are the Professionals who recommend these products specifically for their clients. Try asking a Target associate which shampoo will not strip highlights or fry my hair.
