Let’s face it: Most items at garage sales and yard sales are junk. It's stuff the family conducting the sale wants to get rid of, hoping to make $100 on a good weekend. With that in mind

re: Yard sales: 6 things to buy and how to get a better deal

Thanks for the good ideas on yard sales. It can be a lot of fun and it can bring in some good money. I have heard that Hard Cover Books by certain authors can bring in big money you just have to get a list of authors than are hot . Thanks again, jj

I'm still brooke and trying to pay off an Ipod that I bought. Sometimes garage sales can be a rip off. People just buy that stuff because it's displayed well. sometimes it's actually good, but most of the time it's junk. Just because I'm saying don't go always to buy things from garage sales, doesn't mean I'm saying buy your house a new makeover with Gucci and Prada redesigned furniture. It just means that if it's too good to be true, maybe it's not true. So, buy something that maybe you know will work at a garage sale, but watch your money, and know how to live your life well. Here are somethings that maybe you COULD buy at a garge sale and NOT get ripped off;

~Stuffed animals

~ Books (How could you get ripped of with that?)

~Knick Knacks

~Other Toys

Hey and look, don't be all spoiled and wear your money. It's okay to not always wear the top price things, and still get some nice things.

Obviously, a few items should be priced higher according to what they are and the condition they are in. But I have found that one trick to getting a better price is to group like items together and sell as one package...i.e., several bottles of nail polish in a baggy instead of pricing separately. Also....if you are willing to deal on price the customer might buy more items and you will still come out okay.

Hang or at least neatly fold all clothing...iron if necessary. You will get a better price for the clothes. Sell them individually or 3 for $10 of something like that. Same thing with books. Be willing to change your marketing signs throughout the day as well.

Use balloons and very clear signs....as many as necessary to help locate your home.

I serve some cookies in the early morning hours as well.....play some soft background music....keeps people looking a little longer.

These were on my list as I headed for the hardware store.

I have firnished our home and vacation home with many second hand items at a fraction of the cost of new. My feeling is that anyone can pay retail. I like the challenge of getting a great bargain especially if it is something I need.

I have bid on an entire lot (a box or more of various stuff) in order to get 1-2 items. There was a lot of stuff that I did not want. I used to give those items away, but I have found that the local consignment store is a good place to put your "leftovers".

It's a LOT of work to gather all of your items, price them, and arrange them.

Not to mention dealing with the throngs of people who will paw through your stuff and then walk.

The last one I had, which was at the end of the summer of '07, was a real pain-in-the-neck.

The dealers all showed up first thing, and were actually very respectful of our finishing setting up.

I beckoned them forward when I was done, and it was like a group of vultures descending on prey.

I kept my eye on all fifteen of them. Sold a few things, and was also seriously lowballed. I refused any real lowball offers, as I also sell on Ebay and craigslist and am not going to bring things to Goodwill so that they can sell the items themselves.

Many leftover items were brought directly to a local homeless shelter so that the residents could benefit from clothing, blankets, and some electronic items for the office.

Bill B's story of a "back in the day" sale from the '80's brings fond memories of my first major yard sale prior to a cross-country move back in '96. I cleared over $2000 that weekend....incredible.

Of course, this was before Ebay and craigslist.... Ebay has seriously killed the resale market for individuals.

We save everything and sell it a a nice profit. Over time we have made close to $7000.00 dollars on items that most people have thrown away. We will still continue to do these sales now and then.
